Garden Name Game Trivia Questions

1. This flower has long whiskers, but it is not named after cats. Instead it shares an animal theme with a grim superhero. What is this flower that belongs to the genus Tacca?

From Quiz
Flora Prima Donnas

Answer: Bat flower

Bat flowers (or bat plants) come in different colors. The most famous is the black bat flower (Tacca chantrieri), but there is also the white bat flower (Tacca integrifolia). Bat flowers are named so because their shape resembles that of a bat. They can grow quite large in size, since the filaments can become over 30 inches (75 cm) long and the flowers over 12 inches (30 cm) wide. Their whiskers may also grow very long, reaching all the way to the ground sometimes. Bat plants are indigenous to tropical areas around the world, and need to kept in temperatures higher than 40-50 F (ca. 5-15 C). However, they don't like the sun and it is better to keep them in a humid and shaded environment.

2. What plant looks like a little preacher in a hooded pulpit?

From Quiz Flowers for the Shade Garden

Answer: jack-in-the-pulpit

The cute little "jack" is a spadix, and his covered pulpit is a spathe. The flowers are barely visible around jack. There are also three large leaves on the stalk too. Plant corms in the fall, or transplant container-grown plants outside in spring, and you'll have jack-in-the-pulpits. They require little care, other than watching for slug damage. They grow 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) tall, and are best planted about the same distance apart. They are at their Bible-thumping best in spring and early summer, then produce bright red berries in fall.

Answer: lady ferns

These tall ferns love dappled shade, if you can find a bit of that. We let them grow up by the side of our porch, at the back of our garden, so everything short is shaded but they get some early morning sun across the porch floor. They can handle full shade too, and have beautiful, delicate fronds. Garden shops can provide rhizomes that are planted in the fall and begin growing the next spring, or you may find small potted ferns in early spring.
