Name the Movie Trivia Questions

1. Name the greatest "A" movie that contains these roles: Blanche DuBois, Harold Mitchell, Stella Kowalski.

From Quiz
Action! ABCs (The Best Movies Alphabetically)

Answer: A Streetcar Named Desire

"A Streetcar Named Desire" was released in 1951. The film revolves around a southern belle who is searching for some place in the world to call her own, and is set in the French quarter of New Orleans. Blanche DuBois is that southern lady. She moves in with her sister Stella, and brother-in-law Stanley. It was based on a play of the same name by Tennessee Williams. Mr. Williams also helped write the screenplay for the film. It was directed by Elia Kazan, and starred a virtually unknown actor named Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski. It received 10 Academy Award nominations, and won four Oscars. Those awards were given for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, and Best Art Direction. The roles listed were played by Vivien Leigh, Karl Malden, and Kim Hunter.

2. One of the worst movies ever made starred the much loved John Travolta. It is a futuristic sci-fi movie which revolves around a small group of humans trying to regain control of the planet Earth from an alien race. Can you name the movie?

From Quiz 10 Worst Movies of All Time

Answer: Battlefield Earth

"Battlefield Earth" was a disappointment from beginning to end. While John Travolta is one my favorite actors, the movie was highly criticized in almost every aspect. The film received 8 Golden Raspberry Awards, and in 2010 won the title of Worst Picture of the Decade.

3. What oceanic blockbuster film connects these four words: Amity, Shark, Quint, Orca?

From Quiz 4 Words - 1 Movie

Answer: Jaws

Released in 1975, "Jaws" follows the calamity befalling the fictional seaside town of Amity as their beaches are invaded by a Great White shark of voracious appetite. In an effort to hunt down the menace, the town enlists grizzled fisherman and shark hunter Sam Quint who sets out on his boat The Orca and to his ultimate gruesome demise. "Deep Blue Sea", "The Reef" and "Sharknado" are all shark themed films, however "Jaws" is the only one to feature Quint and a boat called The Orca. Fun fact: The mechanical shark they used in filming was prone to malfunctioning due to lengthy time spent immersed in water. Good friend to Spielberg and fellow film maker George Lucas was a victim of malfunction when the jaws clamped shut over his head, trapping him for several minutes.

4. Can you identify the 2011 film by Lebanese director Nadine Labaki? It should appeal to those at a crossroads in their lives.

From Quiz No Worries! Favorite Films

Answer: Where Do We Go Now?

"Et maintenant on va où?" or "Where Do We Go Now" is the second film by Lebanese director Nadine Labaki. The film is a black comedy set in a remote Middle Eastern village where women of all faiths join together and go to outrageous lengths to find ways to keep the men from learning about religious strife breaking out between Christians and Muslims in the country. Though their antics from hijacking the village radio and television to hiring exotic dancers are hilarious, the film does an excellent job of communicating the religious tensions simmering under the surface. 5. Which 2011 Adam Sandler movie about the misadventures of fraternal twins was nominated for a record-breaking twelve Razzie Awards?

From Quiz Boo!

Answer: Jack and Jill

And of the twelve Razzies it was nominated for, it won for all of them; "Jack and Jill" very quickly dropped onto IMDB's worst movies listing because it was, objectively, one of Sandler's worst-made films according to critics though, despite that, it earned almost $150,000,000 in the box office, nearly doubling its budget. The movie also starred Katie Holmes and Al Pacino, both of whom technically won Razzies (though Sandler won both Best Actor and Best Actress for playing Jack and Jill). The movie was an odd couple affair in which Sandler's Jack had some Thanksgiving hijinx with Sandler's Jill. What an odd sentence to write.

6. Which romantic comedy, about two people brought together by a radio show, has its final scene at the top of the Empire State Building?

From Quiz Seattle: Degrees of Separation

Answer: Sleepless in Seattle

In "Sleepless in Seattle", Tom Hanks plays Sam Baldwin, a widower with a young son. He is persuaded by his son to talk about his wife on a radio show and one of the listeners, Annie Reed (Meg Ryan), feels a connection with him. They only properly meet in the climax at the observatory deck of the Empire State Building, after fleeting glances and brief meetings on a few earlier occasions.

7. Kathryn and Sebastian were wealthy, step-siblings with a sinister plan. Annette was wholesome and pure and Sebastian fell head over heels for her. Do you remember the name of this movie?

From Quiz Do You Remember Me?

Answer: Cruel Intentions

"Cruel Intentions" was released in 1999. It starred, Reese Witherspoon as Annette. Ryan Phillippe starred as Sebastian and Sarah Michelle Gellar played his step-sister, Kathryn. Sebastian plotted to seduce Annette due to an article she had written in a magazine about remaining pure until falling in love. Kathryn's character was the opposite of Annette's character and her intentions to exploit other people were exposed by Annette in the end.

8. Ryan Reynolds was trapped in a coffin with a cell phone and a few other items in what 2010 film?

From Quiz Help? Anybody?

Answer: Buried

In this movie, Reynolds, playing a war-time truck driver, woke up buried in a coffin deep underground. While he could communicate via a cell phone, he spent the entirety of the movie in the box, trying to drum up the five million dollar ransom before he ran out of time and suffocated in his tomb. The movie, considered Hitchcockian in nature, received critical praise and earned $20,000,000 in the box office.

9. 1946 Disney film rarely shown. Live action with animation. "Mr. Bluebird's on my shoulder." What film do these clues indicate?

From Quiz Three Harder Clues to a Movie

Answer: Song of the South

Deemed racist by critics both at the time it was released and now, "Song of the South" did play into the stereotypes of that time with kindly old "Uncle" Remus, jive-talking crows and a southern plantation setting. Still, it gave us "Zippity Doo Dah" and a retelling of Joel Chandler Harris's Brer Rabbit stories. And that was the basis of the movie: a little boy, unhappy because of his parents splitting up turns for comfort to a plantation worker named Uncle Remus who gives him important lessons through the Brer Rabbit stories. These stories show the wily rabbit getting out of one scrape after another by using his smart little brains and the foolishness of his enemies.

10. Child prostitute. Disturbed driver. "You talkin' to me?" Which of the movies below contains all these clues?

From Quiz Three Clues to a Movie

Answer: Taxi Driver

"Taxi Driver" was one of the rawest, most disturbing films of 1976 and it helped make Robert De Niro a household name. His depiction of Travis Bickle, the mad taxi driver, mixed the young man's dangerous thinking with his sad perspective on his life. Jodie Foster played Iris, the little girl that made her living on the street. Robert De Niro delivered a great performance as the taxi driver who has an obsession with guns and the squalor of life. And "You talkin' to me?" was the line he said into his mirror, intimidating his imaginary foes. "Charlie's Angels" was a TV show, and a movie remake. None of the Angels were streetwalkers. "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" had its share of hookers but none of them were actual children. "Pretty Baby" was Brooke Shields' breakout film and was indeed about her character's prostitution as a child. However, this was a turn of the 20th century story placed in Storyville, New Orleans.

11. What movie did Danny DeVito NOT have a part in?

From Quiz What Movie Wasn't That Star In? II

Answer: Sleepers

In the 1983 movie "Terms of Endearment", Danny played Vernon Dahlart, suitor for the hand of Aurora Greenway (Shirley Maclaine). In the 1984 movie "Johnny Dangerously", Danny played Burr. In the 1999 movie "Man on the Moon", Danny played Andy Kaufman's (Jim Carrey) agent George Shapiro. "Sleepers" was a 1996 movie starring Jason Patric, Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Vittorio Gassmann and Kevin Bacon. It was about four kids who were sent to a reformatory and were physically and sexually abused by guards. Years later, two of the kids, now adults, avenge themselves by killing one of the guards at a restaurant. The four friends then hatch a scheme to bring to public light, through the court system, the horrors they endured at the reform school.

12. Which film is the character Daniel Plainview in?

From Quiz Character Name To Film Title

Answer: There Will Be Blood

Daniel Day-Lewis played Daniel Plainview in Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" (2007). He won an Oscar for his excellent work. The film is about an oilman (Day-Lewis) who gets too greedy and tricks a town into giving him their land for oil drilling.

13. Which epic 1960 Stanley Kubrick film, the highest-grossing (in the U.S.) movie of the year, starred Kirk Douglas in the title role?

From Quiz Do You Remember This Film?

Answer: Spartacus

Based on the novel by Howard Fast and set in the Roman Empire, "Spartacus" tells the story of the leader of a slave revolt. Kirk Douglas played the title character in an all-star cast that included Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton and Tony Curtis. Peter Ustinov earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as Lentulus Batiatus, the owner of a gladiatorial school near Mount Vesuvius. Somewhat surprisingly, the film was not even nominated in either the Best Picture or Best Director category at that year's Oscars, both of which were won by Billy wilder's "The Apartment".

14. Name the movie in which the hero deliberately exiles himself to the middle of nowhere, "goes native", and finds his true soul.

From Quiz Location Location Location

Answer: Dances With Wolves

Kevin Costner plays the title character, John "Not Dumb Bear" Dunbar, who is given the name "Dances With Wolves" by the Cheyenne. Costner was nominated for three Academy Awards and two Golden Globes for his role and for directing the film, winning for Director in both Award ceremonies. The film won both "Best Picture" awards as well.

15. Name the 1956 John Ford film starring John Wayne as a grizzled war veteran looking for his niece?

From Quiz Friends For Hire

Answer: The Searchers

"The Searchers" (1956) featured John "Duke" Wayne as returned war veteran Ethan Edwards. Around 1868 his young niece Debbie (Lana Wood) is abducted by Comanche Natives. Ethan spends five years searching, spurred on by his hatred of the Comanches, only to discover she has become a married member of the Comanches (the niece is now played by Natalie Wood). Enraged that she is an "Indian", he tries to kill her, but then sees her home. This movie made the respective "greatest and best movies of all time" lists of France, Britain and the US. The gruff John Ford first hired tough man John Wayne for the film "Stagecoach" in 1939. They worked together on more than 20 other films.

16. In 1981, I saw my first inflight film. Which John Belushi romantic comedy about a reporter and a wildlife researcher in the Rocky Mountains did I see?

From Quiz Films on Planes

Answer: Continental Divide

The words "John Belushi" and "romantic comedy" don't seem to go together, but it actually was a charming film. Blair Brown from the television show, "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd", played Belushi's love interest. She was a scientist, researching bald eagles, and Belushi was a Chicago newspaper reporter who was sent to interview her to keep him out of trouble at home. Opposites attracted, and the two ended up together. The film was released in September 1981, about three months before I saw it on a cross-country flight to Atlanta. Belushi died soon after in March 1982.

17. What 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor was once one of the most expensive films ever made and actually won Taylor a Guinness Record for excessive costume changes?

From Quiz One-Word Movie Titles [2]

Answer: Cleopatra

Also starring Richard Burton and Rex Harrison, "Cleopatra" was popular in its time, but ended up being quite expensive to make, inevitably costing over $44,000,000 in 1963. While it became the top-grossing film of 1963 it put its studio in financial jeopardy. The film followed the end of Cleopatra's life and her relationships with Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony before her famous death by asp. It won four of the nine Oscars it was nominated for.

18. What movie contains Buttercup, a man with six fingers on one hand, and the words "Rodents of unusual size... I don't believe they exist."?

From Quiz Can You Name This Movie in Three Clues?

Answer: The Princess Bride

"The Princess Bride" was about a man and woman who have true love. Buttercup was born to a higher class than Wesley, yet that never stopped her from loving him. He had loved her since he first saw her, but was afraid to tell her so he always said "As you wish" when she asked him to do something, which stood for "I love you". The six fingered man was an enemy of Inigo Montoya, a friend and companion of Wesley. The six fingered man murdered Inigo's father when Inigo was very young, so Inigo was seeking revenge. Wesley said the line, "Rodents of unusual size... I don't believe they exist," right before a ROUS attacked him. He fought them off and he and Buttercup were safe... for a little while.

19. Name the movie: Kelly McGillis; John Book (character); Philadelphia; Danny Glover; Lancaster County?

From Quiz Name That Movie: Downward Spiral With A Twist

Answer: Witness

"Witness" (1985) was an unusual movie as it was deemed a thriller but underneath it was a love story. Lucas Haas played an Amish boy who witnessed a murder in Philadelphia. John Book (Harrison Ford) was a hard-boiled cop who needed to shelter in the boy's Amish community and, in time, fell in love with the boy's mother (Kelly McGillis). It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning two.

20. Which film includes these 4 actresses? Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy.

From Quiz Match the Movie

Answer: Bridesmaids

'Bridesmaids' is about Annie (Wiig) finding her life has turned upside down when she takes on the role as Lillian's (Rudolph) Maid of Honour. She starts competing against Helen (Byrne) for Lillian's attention. After a brief falling out, best friends Lillian and Annie sort out their differences, just in time for the wedding.

21. In 2004, documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock proved to be a questionable investigator when he decided to go on a month-long diet of nothing but McDonald's fast food. Why? To uncover secrets and causes of obesity. What was the name of his movie?

From Quiz Strange Motives

Answer: Super Size Me

"Super Size Me" was a major hit in the 2000s, mainly because it poked holes in the fast-food culture that had taken grip in the western world. For a month, Spurlock filmed himself consuming foods only from McDonald's locations-- three square meals a day-- to determine the short and long-term effects. Why? Simply to investigate the rise in obesity... you know... by joining the ranks. While Spurlock did gain weight and showed physiological changes, he did not become obese. The movie, however, was a huge success in the box office and ended up resulting in major changes to fast food menus worldwide, simply out of public awareness. It premiered at Sundance and earned almost $30,000,000 by the time it hit DVD. As if undeterred, Spurlock created a TV show on the same basis by the name of "30 Days" in which he, his wife, and others, were forced to spend thirty days under crummy conditions. One episode had his family living with minimum wage; another involved living off the grid; another involved a thirty-day binge drinking session.

22. Starting back in the land of Gondwana, what film series featuring a prehistoric squirrel named Scrat would have been set (at the least) one hundred eighty million years ago?

From Quiz Far in Time

Answer: Ice Age

The "Ice Age" film franchise started in 2002 and continued with several popular sequels starring Ray Romano as Manny the Mammoth, Denis Leary as Diego the Saber-Toothed Tiger, and John Leguizamo as Sid the Sloth. In the first film, the main characters were fully in the unspecified ice age but as the sequels plodded on and unthawed, not only did the ice start to melt away, but the continent started to split up. By the third sequel released in 2012, "Continental Drift", the continents started to form. The films, as a franchise, have grossed over $300,000,000; they were created by the animators at Blue Sky Studios, also known for "Robots" (2005).

23. The "James Bond" Series Throughout 24 movies from 1962-2012, six different actors have played the role of the suave British secret agent James Bond. In which of the listed titles was Australian actor George Lazenby selected for the role?

From Quiz In Which Movie or Sequel Did That Happen?

Answer: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

George Lazenby was cast in the role after Sean Connery announced his retirement from the movie franchise, after completing five films in the lead role. Lazenby himself chose to leave the role after completing his only James Bond File, in part due to "creative differences" with the production company. 24. According to early drafts of this 2000 Tom Hanks movie, Wilson was supposed to be a soccer ball. What film was it?

From Quiz Now Cut That Out!

Answer: Cast Away

"Cast Away" was a major movie release in 2000, not only earning over $400,000,000 in the box office, but getting Hanks nominated for an Oscar (he lost to Russell Crowe in "Gladiator"). Director Robert Zemeckis made "Forrest Gump" with Hanks in 1994 (both won Oscars) and followed up with Hanks again with "The Polar Express". "Cast Away" was about a FedEx employee whose plane crashed into the ocean; he washed up on an island and spent four years there before making his escape. Early scripts called for different, minor treatments. On the island, the cast away's main companion was a volleyball named Wilson (after the Wilson sporting goods company), but an early draft of the script replaced it with a soccer ball. More importantly, the package that he left unopened on the island and later delivered back to the original sender was opened; inside was salsa. Seriously. But that was cut out of the script. Instead, Hanks delivered it and never opened it.

From Quiz Needs...More...Oxygen...

Answer: Buried

Released to positive critical reviews in 2010, "Buried" was first screened at the Sundance Film Festival. Many compared the work of Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés to early thrillers created by Alfred Hitchcock more than half a century earlier. It earned almost $20,000,000 in its box office run, over ten times what it cost to make. The film starred Ryan Reynolds as a truck driver deployed to Iraq for work. Upon getting kidnapped by enemy forces, he was placed into a coffin and buried underground. Much of the film involved his attempts to figure out how he could escape what might be his final resting place.

30. Scientists discover the Earth's core is quickly heating up. The world's leaders begin preparations for the future as the Mona Lisa is replaced with a fake for protection. What 2009 film's opening sequence does this describe?

From Quiz The End of the Beginning

Answer: 2012

Roland Emmerich (who I've been calling Mr. Blow-Everything-Up for a while now) directed this 2009 movie starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet (amongst others). When solar flares change the polarity of the Earth and heat things up in the planet's core (in the year of the Mayan calendar's foreseen end), the world's leaders take action to sell seats on large 'arks' that will be used to house the people who will populate the Earth once everything subsides. Emmerich has had a knack for destroying international landmarks, and he didn't fail to meet this expectation here. "2012" earned over $750,000,000 in the box office despite mediocre reviews.
