Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As you walk out to the paddock full of horses your partner tells you that their horse is the "bay gelding." You look at the horses and notice which horse it is straight away. Which horse is it?

Answer: Male horse with a brown body and black mane and tail

A gelding is a castrated male horse. Bay horses can be almost any shade of brown, but have the characteristic black mane and tail, and often black lower legs. They may also have white markings on the face or legs.
2. Once you reach the gate, your partner realises they have forgotten something. "Can you run back to the shed and get the headstall please?" they ask you. Of these 4 items, which one would you go back and get?

Answer: A headpiece made of leather or nylon straps and without a metal mouthpiece

These days, a headstall is sometimes referred to as a "headcollar" or a "halter", although a "halter" was traditionally made of rope. Either way, they are generally used for leading and tying up a horse.
3. You are asked, "Can you go and get me some chaff, please?" What do you get when you go back to the shed?

Answer: Chopped hay or straw

Chaff adds roughage and bulk to a horse's diet. It is usually fed as part of a balanced diet with grain or pelleted feeds.
4. Once the horse is caught, you both begin grooming it. Your partner hands you an object which resembles something like a bent screwdriver. "Ahhh, I know what this is, it's a _________" you tell them.

Answer: Hoof pick

A hoof pick is a plastic or metal, blunt-ended tool used for cleaning mud, dirt and stones from a horse's foot.
5. Your partner asks you to pass them the curry comb. You think for a minute and then realise that a curry comb can be made of several materials. What material is it NEVER made of?

Answer: Stone

A metal curry comb is never used on the actual horse, it is used to clean other bristled brushes. A rubber or plastic curry comb can be used on the horse, to loosen dirt, mud and moulting hair.
6. Your partner hands you a saddle and a saddlecloth. What do you do?

Answer: Walk up to the horse's left side and put the saddlecloth on the horse's back, with the saddle on top

Most handling of horses is traditionally done on the horse's left or "near" side. A saddlecloth is used between the horse and the saddle to keep it clean, and absorb the horse's sweat.
7. Before your partner gets on the horse to ride, he remembers he has forgotten to put boots on the horse. What might you think when you hear this?

Answer: You know that the horse often knocks itself, and boots would protect its legs

Boots for horses are not worn on the feet like humans, but are wrapped around the legs to protect them from injury. There is a type of boot that IS worn on the horse's actual foot, but these are not very common, and when used, are only used instead of metal horseshoes.
8. Your partner offers you a ride first, you accept. You stand to the left of the horse, gather the reins in one hand, put your right foot into the stirrup and swing gently onto the horse's back. What shouldn't you have done?

Answer: Shouldn't have put your right foot in the stirrup

Horses have traditionally been mounted from the left or "near" side. For this reason, you would put your left foot in the stirrup. If you put your right foot in the stirrup, you'd end up sitting in the saddle back-to-front!

The tradition of mounting from the left began with knights carrying their swords. If they mounted from the right, the sword would have been an obstacle. It's only tradition that causes humans to mount from the left and there is now a growing trend of teaching horses to have riders mount from both sides.
9. Once on the horse, you say to your partner "Gee this horse is tall!" they reply "Well he is 16 ______ high."

Answer: hands

"Hand" is the word used when measuring or giving the height of a horse. It is based on the width of a man's hand, and is estimated at 4 inches or 10cm.
10. After your ride, it starts to rain and your partner says they will put a rug on the horse to keep it dry. Which rug would you fetch from the tack room?

Answer: A New Zealand rug

A New Zealand rug is a thick, durable, waterproof rug made of canvas and is generally used on horses that are kept outdoors during winter.
