Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the average gestation period of a horse?

Answer: 11 months

The exact amount of time can vary greatly depending on a number of factors. Things such as the breed of horse, the sex of the foal and the age of the horse in gestation are factors.
2. Which of the following is NOT a movement of the horse?

Answer: Crawl

Put simply, horses are most well known for their agility which is on display when they have free range of movement. Have you ever seen a horse crawl to get anywhere before?

The three incorrect options for this quiz do not require a horse to contort its body in any particular way, while crawling absolutely would.
3. Which of these is a recognized style of horseback riding which began in the USA?

Answer: Western

This isn't recreational - it's a style of horseback riding which was developed for its utility. It was intended originally for use by actual American cowboys. As time went on and horseback travel was phased out by modernization, it became a recreation seen in all parts of the world to some degree.
4. The reins are attached to the horse's back while being ridden.

Answer: False

The idea is for the rider to hold one end of the reins, and gently attach the other to the bit in the horse's mouth. When done this way, the rider can better control the direction their horse travels in.
5. Where does the bit go?

Answer: in the mouth

Along with the reins, properly positioned bits tend to give riders the best possible control over their horses.

The bit can end up being worn as somewhat of a mouth guard, which can give the misconception that this is its purpose.
6. You have a horse, and you reward it with a little more food than usual. Someone warns you that the horse may get sick and puke the food up. Is there a serious risk of your horse vomiting?

Answer: No

There is no risk whatsoever, as horses physically cannot vomit. A strong muscle in the stomach, known as the cardiac sphincter, prevents vomiting in all circumstances, regardless of how nauseating a situation may be.

That said, horses can definitely still feel the pain or discomfort caused by overeating, so it'd be best to maintain a consistent, healthy diet.
7. Humans are, clearly, more intelligent than horses, while horses are definitely larger than humans. How about brain size - is a horse's brain larger than a human's?

Answer: No

A horse's brain is approximately 22 oz (0.6 kg) in size, just less than half the average human brain size of 47 oz (1.3 kg).
8. Horses are not generally completely colorblind, but the vast majority of them will struggle to see one color. What color is this?

Answer: Purple

Flamboyant colors in general may be difficult for some horses to see, but they can definitely see red, green and yellow, at least, consistently.
9. Horses have proven capable of making people lots of money over the years, and not just at races. This horse was sold for a record $70 million in 2000. What was its name?

Answer: Fusaichi Pegasus

Fusaichi Pegasus is most notable for winning the Kentucky Derby in 2000. In Japanese speaking parts of the world, "Fusao" and "ichi" roughly combine to indicate that this was supposed to be one of the greatest horses of all time. And it certainly has a lot going for it in such a discussion.
10. Which of the following is a horse-breed category?

Answer: Cold-blooded

The five categories for breeding are hot-blooded, the mentioned cold-blooded, warmbloods, ponies and miniatures. There are dozens of other unmentioned horse breeds which exist in popular fantasy video games and similar media, but not in real life.
