The breed has a softly rounded head, a short, muscular body, and a thick, short haired coat.

Today the Turkish Van is recognized by the CFA, TICA, and ACFA.

Its body is long, broad, muscular, and deep chested. The coat color should be pure chalk-white, and its colored marking should be confined to the head and tail, with one or more random markings in the shoulder and rump regions.
