Answer: Greyfriars Bobby

On February 8th, 1858, Edinburgh policeman, John Grey, died from tuberculosis. He was buried in one of the local cemeteries, Greyfriars Kirkyard.

For the rest of his life, John's loyal dog, Greyfriars Bobby, is believed to have stayed beside his master's grave. When he died in January, 1872, he was buried just outside the cemetery gates and was commemorated with a special statue.

In January 1925, a severe outbreak of diphtheria hit the town of Nome, Alaska. Although they would face freezing conditions, more than twenty mushers and their teams of sled dogs set out to deliver the only antitoxin available. It would mean travelling up to 1,600km.

A statue of Balto stands in New York's Central Park and his mounted hide can be seen in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

The Russian public were told that Laika had been painlessly euthanised when her oxygen ran out six days after Sputnik's launch. The government eventually admitted however, that Laika had died after only a few hours from stress and overheating.

When Shep's master became ill in the late 1930s, he travelled by train to Fort Benton, Montana, to receive treament. He never returned.

For the next five years, Shep was seen waiting patiently for his master at the train station. Sadly, Shep died when he fell onto the tracks and was run over by a passing train on January 12th, 1942.

According to this story, the Swiss soldier that Barry was trying to help mistook him for being a wolf and stabbed him to death. Thankfully, it's just a story.
