Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these breeds cannot have a corded coat?

Answer: Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute has a thick double coat, while the Poodle, Puli and Komondor all have (or can have) corded coats. The Poodle can be shown with a corded coat, but it takes a lot of time and patience! If the Poodle has a corded coat, it still has to be trimmed in the same pattern as the fluffy Poodles.
2. Which breed can come in more than one color, according to the American Kennel Club?

Answer: Newfoundland

The Bichon Frise must be white (or off-white.) The Schipperke must be black, and so must the Belgian Shepherd. The Belgian Sheepdog can have a small amount of white on its chest, while the Schipperke must be pure black (discounting the graying that comes with age.) While many people believe the Newfoundland must be black, there's a black and white version called the "Landseer."
3. Which of these breeds does not belong because it can't be merled or a tri-color?

Answer: German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd doesn't belong because it cannot be a tri-color (black, tan and white) or merle (either blue merle, which is black, white, tan and gray or red/sable merle, which has two shades of red/sable in place of the black and white, while still including the white and tan.) While it's not seen very often, the Border Collie can be tri-color.

The Shetland Sheepdog and Australian Shepherd are a very common sight in tri-color.
4. Which of these breeds has only one size?

Answer: Great Dane

The Poodle has three sizes, the miniature, the standard and the toy. The Beagle has 10-13 inches, and the 13-15 inches. The Dachshund has standard and miniature. While the Great Dane is a large breed, there is only one height requirement (one for females and one for males), which no distinction for showing different sizes separately.
5. Which of these is a short-coated dog?

Answer: Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a South African sight/scenthound (specifically lionhound) with a short, thick, dense coat. The Afghan is a long-coated sighthound, while the Irish Setter is a long-coated gun dog. The Papillon is a long-coated toy dog, bred for companionship and as a watch-dog.
6. Which of these does not fit in the same family?

Answer: American Foxhound

The Schipperke, Samoyed and Pomeranian are all spitz dogs, that have pointed ears, fox-like muzzles and thick double coats. The American Foxhound is a short-coated hunting dog. The American foxhound, as the name suggests, is a type of hound, not spitz.
7. Which of these does not belong because of body structure?

Answer: Bouvier des Flandres

The Bouvier des Flandres does not belong because the Basset Hound, Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Dachshund all have elongated backs with short legs, which the Bouvier has a normal back with regular-length legs.
8. Which of these breeds does not have a smaller breed that either resembles or is a miniature version of the breed?

Answer: Newfoundland

The Alaskan Husky (which is a type of sled dog) has the Alaskan Klee Kai, the Australian Shepherd has a Miniature Australian Shepherd, and the Rough Collie has the Shetland Sheepdog. There is no breed that bears a strong resemblance to a miniature Newfoundland.
9. Which of these breeds does not have a wire-haired version?

Answer: Weimaraner

The German Pointer is the German Wirehaired Pointer, and it's a coat style with the Dachshund, both miniature and standard. The Belgian Laekenois is the fourth type of Belgian Shepherd, one which isn't AKC recognized. The Weimaraner is commonly known as the "Gray Ghost" due to the silver color.

While there is a myth of a wire-haired Weimaraner, none were ever registered. There are been cross-breed Weimaraners that are wire-haired, but no purebred Weimaraner exists.
10. Which of these doesn't belong because of the structure of the skull?

Answer: Yorkshire Terrier

The Pug, American Bulldog and Shih Tzu all have pushed in faces, while the Yorkshire Terrier has a normal, pointed muzzle.
