Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On October 5th 1975 a star was born to Sally and Roger Winslet. In which country was Kate born?

Answer: England

Kate was born in Reading England and attended St. Marys Primary School before moving on to the Redroofs Theater School in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Kate always had a flare for acting even in the early primary grades. One of her earliest roles was as Beauty in the Primary School play, "Beauty and the Beast." My next door neighbor, Jack, got the part of the Beast, and got to kiss her in the play. To this day, he talks about nothing else.
2. One of Kate's first ever television appearances was in an advertisement when she was only 12 years of age. What type of product was she promoting?

Answer: Breakfast cereal

Kate auditioned for the role in an advertisement for Sugar Puffs breakfast cereal. She got to work with film director Tim Pope who called her a natural and gifted actress. Interestingly enough, breakfast was never Kate's favorite meal of the day. These days she tries to eat healthy but in many interviews she calls her favorite food -- pizza!
3. Moving on from her starring role in St. Marys Primary School's "Beauty and the Beast," she earned her first Oscar nomination for which movie based upon a Jane Austen novel?

Answer: Sense and Sensibility

I am not sure that Kate had even read a Jane Austen novel before earning the part of Marianne Dashwood in the 1995 Big Screen adaption of "Sense and Sensibility." Originally, she had only planned on auditioning for the smaller role of Lucy Steele, but director Ang Lee decided to cast her in a role that would ultimately earn her the nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
4. In 1997, Kate Winslet really became a household name when she was cast in the role of seventeen-year old Rose Dewitt Bukater in what blockbuster movie that, at the time, became the highest grossing movie of all-time?

Answer: Titanic

"Titanic" was a titanic success for Kate as she got to work alongside one of her most favorite co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio, and one of the world's most respected directors in James Cameron. Kate's amazing performance earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and officially announced to the acting world that she was a force to be reckoned with.

Incidentally, I could not help but notice in this movie she had grown a tad more voluptuous since the days we used to go swimming as kids at the local pool.
5. In 1998 and 1999, Kate rejected offers to play the lead role in "Shakespeare in Love" and the lead in what movie that starred Jodie Foster and had a title that featured the name of her oldest sister?

Answer: Anna and the King

I was sad that Kate rejected the lead role in the movie "Shakespeare in Love," which actually became one of my favorite movies of all-time. Interestingly, "Anna and the King" was a movie role she rejected in favor of playing a single mother in the hippy romance "Hideous Kinky." Of Kate's siblings, Joss is the youngest and the only one of the four to not have the acting bug. Younger sister Beth and older sister Anna are both actresses. Anna used to sit at my table in 4th grade and we were married in the school library during recess shortly before the end of the school year.
6. In 2001, Kate showed off her versatility by singing the theme song "What If" and providing a voice for a character in an animated film based upon what Charles Dickens novel?

Answer: A Christmas Carol

Kate has always had the voice of a nightingale and once made a teacher cry in Primary School with a beautiful rendition of "Away in a Manger." "Christmas Carol: The Movie" was directed by Jimmy Murakami and featured the voices of Simon Callow, Nicholas Cage, Jane Horrocks, and also little sister Beth Winslet. The song "What If," hit the number one spot in Ireland, Austria, and Belgium. It also earned a top 10 spot in England, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. All the proceeds from the single were donated by Kate to the Sargent Cancer Care for Children Charity and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
7. On the 22nd of November 1998, Kate married Jim Threapleton at All Saints Church in Downshire Square, Reading, England. The Reverend John Mortiboys married them but what was his connection to Kate Winslet?

Answer: Taught her in primary school

The Reverend John Mortiboys was the lone male teacher at our Primary School and had taught Anna, Kate and Beth in his class. He had also baptized Kate when she was young. Kate's marriage to Jim Threapleton lasted for three years and they have a daughter (Mia Honey) together.

In 2003, Kate married Sam Mendes with whom she shares a son (Joe Alfie). Sadly, Kate's second marriage ended in divorce in 2010.
8. Kate Winslet has had the honor of working with some of Hollywood's most talented actors. In 2004, in the movie "Finding Neverland," which actor famous for his pirate roles does Kate team up with?

Answer: Johnny Depp

"Finding Neverland" earned rave reviews and focused on the story of J.M. Barrie (Johnny Depp) and the friendship he establishes with Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet) and her children. It is the children who inspire him to write the "Peter Pan" stories centered on a boy who refuses to grow up.

The film earned over $110 million in worldwide revenue. The role of Sylvia was especially profound for Kate because it deals with the close relationship she has with her children.
9. Which 2008 movie brought Kate Winslet back together with "Titanic" co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kathy Bates?

Answer: Revolutionary Road

"Revolutionary Road" is arguably one of the most depressing movies Kate has appeared in. This being said many will argue that Kate seems to attract depressing movie roles. Some of the heart-breaking stories she appears in include "Titanic," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Finding Neverland," "Jude," and "Mildred Pierce." Although many might think Kate to be a negative and depressing person in real-life, she is actually the complete opposite.

A faithful daughter, mother, and sister, Kate regularly gives her time and resources to charity events and good causes.
10. The ultimate dream of every actor is to win an Oscar. After six failed nominations, which film did Kate finally earn the coveted Academy Award for?

Answer: The Reader

Kate always dreamed BIG and even in the 4th grade told everyone that one day she would be a famous movie actress. In 2008, she co-starred with Ralph Fiennes and David Kross in "The Reader" directed by Stephen Daldry. The film is set in Germany and focuses on the life of Hanna Schmitz who has an affair with a young boy (Michael Berg) who many years later is the lawyer in a war crimes trial where Hanna is being forced to defend herself. Aside from the Best Actress Academy Award, the film also earned an Oscar for Best Picture.
