Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Was the first to get his powers through the Super Soldier Programme

Answer: Captain America

Steve Rogers (Capt. America) doesn't have super powers per se, but he does have "enhanced" human abilities as a result of successfully completing the Super Soldier Program. His strength, for a human, is off the charts. From reports, he can lift 1,200 pounds.

He is super agile, extremely fast and recovers faster than the ordinary human. Add in his combat experience and great tenacity and we are starting to see the rise of a pretty formidable Avenger. But wait, that's not all. Let's not forget his (almost) indestructible vibranium shield... throw that into the mix and Captain can cut through Iron Man's armour and even take the full brunt of Thor's mighty hammer. All in all, the Captain makes up one formidable opponent and a worthy contender for the mightiest Avenger.
2. An android built by the supervillain Ultron

Answer: Vision

Vision first appears in "The Avengers #57" (1968) at the Avengers headquarters. He admits to them that he has been sent to destroy them and then promptly leads them into a trap at Ultron's lair. The mistake that Ultron made is that he modeled Vision's brainwaves on those of Wonder Man, which eventually turned Vision against him.

Thanks to the jewel in Vision's head, he is able to absorb and fire potent solar energy blasts. As a machine is he both strong and durable and able to slug it out all day with the best of the villains in the cosmos. However, his best trick is his ability to control his own density which, in turn, increases his mass and then, both his strength and imperviousness.
3. The daughter of Magneto and the sister of Quicksilver

Answer: The Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff started life in the Marvel Universe as a villain. Introduced in "X-Men #4" (1964) she is pushed into the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants by Magneto and is a constant thorn in the side of the X-Men. However, when Magneto is abducted by the Stranger, the Brotherhood dissolves and Wanda switches loyalties, becoming an Avenger.

Wanda was altered at birth by the Elder God Chthon and this imbued her with her powers. However, the full extent of those skills did not become evident until she joined the Avengers. This woman is scary powerful. She can change entire universes on a whim and, possibly, the most powerful use of her powers was in the edition "House of M" (2005) where she has a mental breakdown and, with a mere whisper, wipes out 99% of mutant-kind.
4. Was experimented on by Dr. Noah Burstein in Seagate Prison

Answer: Luke Cage

Cage was thrown into prison for a crime that he didn't commit. Seeing it as a way of getting out he volunteered for Dr. Burstein's experiment which was built upon the same theories as the programme that gave Captain America his powers. A racist prison office, Albert Rackhman tried to sabotage the experiment in a bid to kill Cage but, instead, endowed him superhuman strength and made his skin virtually impenetrable. Bullets bounce off Cage, knives cannot cut him and he can resist high pressures and chemical attacks. Starting life as a street brawler he soon developed his skills in a range of different fighting disciplines.

As a result, Cage can, not only take a massive amount of punishment, he can also dish it out effectively without having to raise too much of a sweat. Apart from being an Avenger at one time Cage has also been one of the Defenders and the Thunderbolts.
5. She's an Eternal who's very fond of Captain America

Answer: Sersi

What the heck makes someone an eternal? Super strength, super speed, super stamina, knows how to fight and is invulnerable - you know, the usual stuff. Sersi is all of these things and much more. She has telekinetic abilities and she can fire cosmic blasts from her hands. But wait, that's not all, she's a fifth level adept at transmutation... you can't get any higher than that. So what does that mean? It means she can manipulate molecules, can disintegrate air and she can turn the Hulk into a rubber duck.

Sersi first appears in "The Eternals #3" (1976) and is revealed to be tens of thousands of years old and, over those years, has had numerous encounters with Thor. It is in "Avengers #314" (1990) where she suits up as an Avenger. While she claims it's her desire to aid humanity, and that may be partly true, she really has the "hots" for Captain America.
6. Arrogant surgeon, damages hands in a car crash

Answer: Dr. Strange

With his career shattered Steven Strange bolts to the Himalayas where he falls in with an order that is run by a mystic arts master called the Ancient One. Strange has an aptitude for the arts and develops his skills rapidly, becoming the Sorcerer Supreme when the Ancient One is killed. Armed with the Eye of Agamotto, the Cloak of Levitation and his trusty Book of Vishanti the good Doctor can project his consciousness across astral planes, manipulate time and twist the fabric of reality.

He is truly one of the most powerful human beings on Earth.
7. Blessed with an adamantium coated skeleton

Answer: Wolverine

The adamantium skeleton makes Wolverine nigh on unbreakable and those claws give him the ability to slice through any known metal as if it were made of butter. As if that wasn't enough, he spent an extended period of time in Japan where he mastered a range of martial arts that has turned him into an elite fighting force.

However, the jewel in the crown that makes this man, who has been an Avenger, one of the X-Men and a member of X-Force, virtually invulnerable is his healing power. Yes there are other heroes out there that have enhanced healing powers, but they generally require a significant amount of time for it to be effective.

In Wolverine's case, his physiology is such that he heals in seconds, meaning he is never down for the count.
8. Robert Reynolds

Answer: Sentry

Reynolds is another that was experimented upon in the Super Soldier Programme. The serum that has been introduced into his body reacts with a series of drugs already in his system and he becomes the Sentry, a being with the power of "one million exploding suns".

The evil Mastermind implants a virus into Sentry and this brings to the surface his alter-ego and arch-nemesis the Void. Reynolds is fearful of the Void unaware that he is the same creature. Emma Frost, the powerful psychic, eventually frees his mind and the Void-less Sentry joins the Avengers. So how powerful is the Sentry? Strength wise, he's in the same league as the Hulk, he has psionic abilities and can bend light to his own will.

Here's the kicker... even when he's reduced to mere molecules, he can re-generate himself. How the heck do you kill something like that. Does he have a weakness? Yes he does and it's that his human conscientiousness gets in the way.

In "World War Hulk" (2007), Hulk soon realised this and used it to his own advantage and beat Sentry to a pulp.
9. Often referred to as the "Forgotten One"

Answer: Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is another one of the Eternals, an ancient race of humans who have been genetically altered by the Celestials and whose mission it is to protect humankind. All of the Eternals have been gifted with super strength but, in Gilgamesh's case, it was overcooked and he has significantly more power than his counterparts.

He was blessed with so much power that it would place him in the same realms of strength as Thor and Hercules. Add to this that he could also emit power beams made of either light or heat and, at times, sheer force from both his hands and eyes, the Gil would certainly take some stopping.
10. Became the King of Atlantis

Answer: Namor

One of the forgotten Avengers and it is probably because he doesn't play well with others. He's gone toe-to-toe with the Hulk and Thor in the past and, despite this, it tends to skip our minds that, pound for pound, this man is one of the most powerful beings on Earth. Add to that the fact that is incredibly agile and can fly, you have an extremely formidable Avenger.

He does have a piece of kryptonite in that the longer he is out of water the less potent his powers become.
11. She is a Kree-human hybrid

Answer: Captain Marvel

One of the most loved Marvel characters of all time, she made her first appearance in this universe as Carol Danvers in "Marvel Super-Heroes #13" (1967). A member of the US Air Force she would accompany the original Captain Marvel, the Kree hero Mar-Vell, on a number of missions. That is, until an explosion, that should have killed Danvers, succeeded in merging her human form with Mar-Vells. This gave her superhuman strength and the ability to fly at six times the speed of sound. In addition she can absorb a vast array of energies and then use them as weapons, firing energy blasts from her fingertips.

Over the years she has gone by various names, including Ms. Marvel, Warbird and Binary.
12. Granted immortality by the mysterious Apples of Idunn

Answer: Thor

Those that have seen the film "Avengers: Endgame" (2019) will recall that Thor regularly put forth that he was the mightiest Avenger. He has a strong case. By Stan Lee's admission, Thor was created, initially, as an equal adversary to the Hulk. Whilst he has enormous depths of strength, he is not quite as powerful as the incredible green machine, however, he does have some other amazing attributes to his name.

He can control weather, specifically lightening, and he can travel at the speed of light. Add to this that he possesses the Belt of Strength, which can double his power and he has the mighty Mjolnir, one of the most powerful weapons in the universe.

Not convinced about him yet? The demi-god has managed to knock out the Phoenix force, he has torn out dimensional portals using only his hands and, he's managed to escape the clutches of a black hole whilst carrying the Red Hulk on his back. And I haven't even mentioned the God Blast he can use.
13. Was one of Odin's shield-maidens

Answer: Valkyrie

Valkyrie first appears in "Avengers #83" (1970) leading a band of superwomen known as the Liberators, fighting oppression from their chauvinistic male counterparts. She is an Asgardian blessed with superior fighting skills and, on Asgard, can only look upon Lady Sif as being anywhere near her equal. If that wasn't potent enough, she is teamed with her horse, Aragorn, who seems to know exactly what Valkyrie is thinking and the pair move as one. If you're not running scared by now, then take a look at her famous sword. It is called Dragonfang. Supposedly made from the tooth of a mystical dragon, it is unbreakable and has a resistance to most magic.

Valkyrie has been a key member of the Defenders but then helped to found the Secret Avengers that also included the likes of Captain America, Beast, Ant-Man and Nova.
14. Owned Williams Innovations and a bitter hatred toward Iron Man

Answer: Wonder Man

Simon Williams was introduced in 1964 in "The Avengers #9". He had inherited the hugely successful Williams Innovations from his father and thanks to some stiff competition from Stark Industries managed to bankrupt it. Hence his intense dislike of Iron Man. The evil Baron Zemo identified this, imbued Williams with powers using an experimental serum and then used him in a plot to destroy the Avengers. However, Williams, now Wonder Man, deceives him and comes to the aid of the Avengers. The battle drains him and, while most think him dead, he has simply gone into a catatonic state, while his body takes its time adjusting to Zemo's serum.

Reborn, he has the strength to rival the mighty Thor, has incredible stamina, speed, flexibility and some amazing reflexes. He has been rendered almost indestructible and can fire energy blasts from his hands. What more can a Wonder Man want? Well, seeing that you asked, he can exist on nothing but pure energy. That's right, he can go without food and water, and even oxygen, to survive.
15. Gets caught in the explosion of an experimental gamma-bomb

Answer: The Hulk

Bruce Banner and his alter-ego exploded onto the pages of Marvel in 1962 in "The Incredible Hulk #1" and has since gone on to become one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel Universe. It almost feels like his strength is limitless and, it seems, that the angrier he gets the stronger he becomes. He has held together tectonic plates, has been seen lifting an entire star and managed to damage the space-time continuum by simply punching a hole in time. He is definitely one mighty Avenger.

On the subject of Hulk or Hulks, and whilst they possibly deserve their own slots for consideration here, we could also include in this pantheon General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who is revealed as the Red Hulk and Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner, who gets a blood transfusion from Bruce and becomes the She-Hulk.
