Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Red Detachment of Women" is a ballet that was performed in 1972 for President Nixon when he visited which country?

Answer: China

Nixon's seven day visit to People's Republic of China in February 1972 was the first time that any American president had visited the country. His meetings with Mao Zedong and the First Lady's openness to touring schools and hospitals in cities such as Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai helped to cement USA relationships with China, while implementing a split between China and Soviet Union. Since "the week that changed the world" as it was dubbed, every USA president from Nixon to Trump, with the exception of Carter, has visited China.
"Red Detachment of Women" tells the tale of a peasant girl, freed from her life of poverty and her subsequent rise in the Chinese Communist Party and is based on the real life events of the all-female Special Company of the 2nd Independent Division of Chinese Red Army, which was formed in May 1931.

2. Which of these genres best describes that used in Rockstar's 2010 video game release of "Red Dead Redemption"?

Answer: Western

"Red Dead Redemption" was set in a fictional version of the United States and Mexico, where players could enjoy the cowboy fantasy by riding horses, being a gunslinger and hunting down bounties on wanted posters. It was one of the most expensive games ever produced at the time it was released; its estimated costs may have reached up to a hundred million dollars. Its critical reception was overwhelmingly positive - the landscape and graphics, music, dynamic weather events and voice acting were all positively rated features in this action-adventure game.

Answer: Amazing Red

Puerto Rican born Figueroa, sometimes called just "Red", began his professional career as part of the International Wrestling Association circuit in 1998 but he is probably better known for his deeds on the Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling arena where he was crowned "X Division Champion" on three separate occasions. He would also claim a NWA World Tag Team Championship alongside Jerry Lynn. Figueroa would go on to establish the House of Glory wrestling school. He is a cousin of wrestlers Joel and Jose Maximo and Zelina Vega.

4. Who was the first red-headed Miss America?

Answer: Venus Ramey Murphy

Ramey Murphy won the Miss America title in 1944. In addition to being the first red-headed winner, she was also first winner to be photographed in color. In another "first", upon the completion of her reign as Miss America she handed the crown to Bess Myerson, the first Jewish Miss America. In the 1970's she ran for public office in the Kentucky House of Representatives and was a write-in candidate for the 2000 US Presidential election. She certainly was well-suited for her fiery red hair!

6. Red Skull is a Marvel Comics villain who was first depicted as the arch enemy of which superhero?

Answer: Captain America

The original Red Skull who appeared in 1941 wore a mask, yet his face was often seen. His name was George Maxon. In later comics that same year, it was revealed that Maxon was a pawn. The real Red Skull is Johann Shmidt and it is this character that has remained consistent. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby (they both take credit) Red Skull appeared in the Captain America comics and later in the Marvel Avengers franchise. There are two spellings of Red Skull's alter-ego: On the Marvel Comics' site it's spelled Shmidt, without the 'c' that is added in other information sites.

Answer: Red Planet

"Red Planet" was the first feature film directed by Antony Hoffman and it grossed just $33.5 million on a budget of $80 million. 8. Carmen Sandiego, a criminal often depicted with red hair, first appeared in which type of media?

Answer: Video game

Broderbund released the first computer game of the series, "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" in 1985. It was a mystery exploration game in which players tracked down Carmen and the other members of the criminal organization, V.I.L.E., and arrested them. This game and its successors became very popular in classrooms because of their use of geography-based clues to help players locate the criminals. The games' popularity spawned a franchise that would grow to include a PBS game show, multiple TV shows, board games, and more. In many of these, Carmen has been depicted with red hair, but there have been some to show her with dark brown or black hair instead.
