Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song by Australian artist John Paul Young was used as the theme tune for the film "Strictly Ballroom"?

Answer: Love is in the Air

"Love is in the Air" is a disco song from 1977 that peaked at number 3 in the Australian charts but also became a worldwide hit. It also won the most popular Australian single in 1978. Baz Luhrmann made it the theme tune for the 1992 film "Strictly Ballroom". Bizarrely it is also sung on a regular basis by supporters of Dundee United.

"The Power of Love" was performed by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "Love Me Tender", was of course Elvis, and "Love is All Around" was a hit for The Troggs and covered by Wet Wet Wet when it was used in the film "Four Weddings and a Funeral".

Phoenix Rising's Red Crew member smpdit is feeling the love tonight as she pens this question.
2. In which British drama film from 1967, did Sidney Poitier star as Mr Mark Thackeray?

Answer: To Sir, with Love

In "To Sir, with Love", Sidney Poitier starred alongside Christian Robert, Judy Geeson and Lulu in this film dealing with racial issues in an inner city British school. Unable to find work as an engineer as an immigrant from British Guiana, he takes on a teaching position in a tough secondary school for pupils that have been excluded from other schools. Changing his teaching style from textbooks to a more unorthodox approach of treating the class as adults, earning him the respect of the class. Lulu sang the theme tune and achieved five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The other films mentioned also starred Mr Poitier.

smpdit from Red Crew, remembers seeing this film as a child and can warble the theme tune amazingly badly.
3. What is the American streaming television series "Modern Love" based upon?

Answer: Newspaper column in "The New York Times"

"Modern Love" is based on a weekly newspaper column. Each short episode has a different love story and stars a different set of actors. People such as Anne Hathaway, Ed Sheeran and Minnie Driver have had the key role in an episode. The show is a romantic comedy and premiered in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video.

Phoenix Rising's Red Crew member, jaknginger loves a good romantic comedy.
4. Featuring Gavin MacLeod as the captain, which love and romance 1970s television series was filmed onboard a cruise ship?

Answer: The Love Boat

"The Love Boat" aired from 1977 to 1986, although three pilot shows aired first and a short-lived second series was shown in 1998-99. Each hour-long episode featured three or more vignettes, all centered around romantic, and often clumsy, interludes. Captain Stubbing (Gavin MacLeod) was featured in every episode, as were the ship's doctor, Doc Bricker (Bernie Kopell) and bartender Isaac Washington (Ted Lange). The other two regular cast members were Fred Grandy as purser "Gopher" Smith and Lauren Tewes and Cruise Director Julie McCoy.

While some of the show was filmed in the studio, a lot of filming was done onboard the Pacific Princess and her sister ship, the Island Princess. Real passengers on cruises at the time of filming were often used as extras. The regular crew, including Jill Whelan (Captain's daughter, Vicky) were all made godparents of the Regal Princess in 2014, and in 2015, received a joint star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Several Princess ships, including the Royal Princess and the Majestic Princess, have been known to play "The Love Boat" theme music on their ship's horns.

Red Crew's leith90 was on a pre-pandemic cruise when she heard the Majestic belt out the theme song, and was also aboard the Noordam while Jane McDonald was filming.
5. In William Shakespeare's "Love's Labour's Lost", what prompts King Ferdinand of Navarre and three of his lords to break an oath they had made with each other that was supposed to last three years?

Answer: Falling in love

King Ferdinand, Lord Berowne, Lord Dumaine and Lord Longaville take an oath to not give in to the company of women for three years so that they can devote themselves to studying and fasting. Further, Ferdinand decrees that no woman should come within a mile of his court. Not surprisingly, Ferdinand and his lords all fall in love shortly after and eventually are told that they have to prove their love by waiting a year and a day for the ladies to return.

This question was promised into the quiz by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member Triviaballer as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
6. A musical version of the novel, "Daddy-Long-Legs" was produced in 1951; based on the nickname the protagonist chooses for herself in college, what was the name of this musical?

Answer: Love from Judy

Jerusha Abbot is an orphan, who is able to go to college through the intervention of her anonymous benefactor who she calls "Daddy-Long-Legs." While at college, she adopts the name Judy. The musical starred Jean (later Jeannie) Carson.

"Love with the Proper Stranger" is a movie starring Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen. "Gigi" starred the lovely Leslie Caron, who was in the Fred Astaire movie version of "Daddy-Long-Legs". "Panama Hattie" really is a musical title - it revolves around Cole Porter tunes.

Player pusdoc staged this question for the red crew's participation in Phoenix Rising's Global Tour
7. While it may sound like it's about getting tattoos, what 2018 Windows PC game has a ballpoint pen art style and involves a nameless samurai on a quest for Aiko?

Answer: Inked: A Tale of Love

Developed by Somnium Games, "Inked: A Tale of Love" is a puzzle-platform game that employs an art style in which a ballpoint pen is used on a grid to outline the image. In the game the nameless protagonists goes on a dangerous quest to rescue his love Aiko. The puzzles in the game are created by a comic book artist known as Adam who deviously creates the nameless hero's world and perilous challenges.

This question was inked into the quiz by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member Triviaballer as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
8. In Ian Fleming's novel, "From Russia, with Love", which train takes James Bond from Istanbul to Paris?

Answer: Orient Express

In Ian Fleming's novel, "From Russia, with Love", some of the story plays out on the Orient Express as it carries Bond from Istanbul to Paris. The novel was published in 1957 and was Mr Fleming's fifth in the Bond series.

The Orient Express has had many changes due to high-speed technologies and route changes. No longer the daily commuter, you can travel in the antique and luxurious train for limited routes.

This question was added by jaknginger from Phoenix Rising's Red Crew during the Global Tour. All aboard!
9. Covered by artists like Pink and Adele, who wrote and first recorded "Make You Feel My Love" in 1979?

Answer: Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan wrote the song and released it on his 1979 album "Time Out of Mind". While he never released it as a single, he performed it live on his "Never Ending Tour". Billy Joel recorded the song for his "Greatest Hits Volume III" album in 1997, but under the slightly different name of "To Make You Feel My Love". Dylan's version of the song was included on Adele's 2008 debut "19" album.

Phoenix Rising's Red Crew member leith90 who admittedly can't sing and is not a music aficionado, has at least heard of Dylan.
10. Dick King-Smith is the author of many children's books, including 'All Pigs Are Beautiful', 'The Foxbusters' and 'The Hodgeheg'. He wrote a book in 1999 about cute little young pets. What is it called?

Answer: Puppy Love

Who doesn't love puppies? The book tells of some of the puppies the author has known over the years from the huge Great Dane to the much shorter Dachshund. A fun read for the whole family.

King-Smith has written over 100 books for kids, with one of the best known being "The Sheep-Pig", which was adapted into the lovely movie, "Babe".

Rose Bunting wrote "All the Love in the World". Darcy Pattison wrote "When Kittens Go Viral". "Make Way For Ducklings", written by Robert McCloskey, was released in 1941. Did you know that it is the official children's book of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. "Wonderful Warthogs" is a figment of my imagination, but is a book that deserves to be written, don't you agree?
