Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Lés Misérables" musical, the younger sister of Éponine is entirely left out. What is the name of this character?

Answer: Azelma

In the novel "Lés Misérables", Azelma is the younger sister of Éponine. Unlike her sister, Azelma survives to the end of the novel where she travels with her father, Thérnardier, to America. Azelma is quite timid in comparison to her sister.
2. One character from the musical does not survive to the end of the novel, unlike in the musical, where you see their apparent survival. Which character is this?

Answer: Madame Thérnardier

While Thérnardier survives to the end of the book (he travels to America with Azelma), his wife does not survive. It is mentioned in the book that she dies in prison.
3. The Thérnardiers have more children than they appear to have in the musical. How many children do the Thérnardiers have in the book?

Answer: Five

The Thérnardiers have five children: Two girls, Éponine and Azelma (who does not appear in the musical), and three sons, two of which their names we do not know, and Gavroche, who does not even appear to have any relation whatsoever to the Thérnardiers in the musical.
4. When Fantine is arrested in the musical, another detail as to why she assaulted Bamatabois is left out. What is this reason?

Answer: He put snow down her back

Another detail left out of the musical is that Fantine, desperate for money, sells not only her locket, hair and, eventually, herself, but she also sells her teeth. In the novel, when she begins to resort to prostitution, she comes across an abusive man named Bamatabois who assaults her and puts snow down her back. Angered, Fantine assaults the man right back.
5. Éponine's character in the musical is a bit different from her character in the book. In the musical, she is more approachable. What other characteristic is left out from the musical that she possesses?

Answer: She is a drinker

In the book, it is mentioned that Éponine drinks. Éponine also differs a bit in appearance as in comparison to her described appearance in the book. For example, it is mentioned in the book that she is missing a few teeth, however, in the musical, she has all her teeth intact.
6. A chunk of one of the volumes in the book was left out from the musical due to the limit of time for the musical. What volume in the book was watered down in the musical?

Answer: Volume 2: Cosette

While small parts were cut out from all the volumes, the second volume, Cosette, had been severely cut down, as in the musical, you never witness Cosette's growing up over the years or her time at the convent.
7. In "A Little Fall of Rain", we never truly find out how Éponine was shot, but it is implied she was shot returning to the barricade. How was Éponine really shot?

Answer: She put her hand on a gun aimed at Marius

In the volume Marius, where Éponine dies, Marius witnesses a gun aimed at him, however, he also sees a boy put his hand in front of the muffler and get shot instead. Marius did not know at the time that it was Éponine, but he finds out when he sees her lying on the ground, bleeding to death. Before she dies, Éponine asks Marius to kiss her on the forehead. He does so.
8. The robbery performed by Thérnardier's gang in the musical is quite different from the robbery performed in the book. For one thing, the robbery does not take place out in the streets. Instead, where does it take place?

Answer: The Thérnardiers' Apartment

While the robbery takes place in the Thérnardiers Apartment, Marius still witnesses the robbery. Marius overhears Thérnardier's plan to rob Valjean, and he alerts the police. Javert gives Marius a gun to signal the police should this happen, and Marius watches quietly outside the apartment.
9. Different to the musical, Cosette and Marius do not meet during the robbery. While Marius still witnesses Cosette at the scene, he meets her earlier in the book. Where is this?

Answer: The Luxembourg Gardens

Marius and Cosette meet in the Luxemborg Gardens, when Cosette and her father sit down on one bench, and the two begin to fall in love. The three return to the garden every now and then, and while Valjean is oblivious, Cosette and Marius gaze upon each other and soon meet formally.
10. Contrary to the musical, Éponine does NOT deliver the letter from Marius to the Rue Plumet. Who does instead?

Answer: Gavroche

In fact, Marius does not write the letter until after Éponine is dead.
