Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This black and white animal is a member of the horse family. What is its name?

Answer: Zebra

Zebras are native to Africa, and live in large family groups. Unlike most members of the horse family, zebras have not been tamed and used for carrying goods.

All the other animals are black and white and you could probably see a skunk or a Malayan tapir at the zoo as well. The Dalmatian is a dog, though, and is more likely to be found living in your home.

Question written by rossian.
2. "Spirits of the Night" is the meaning of the Latin name for which zoo animal native to Madagascar?

Answer: Lemur

Madagascar is an island off East Africa and it is here that you can find lemurs roaming in the wild. The lemur is a medium-sized mammal with large reflective eyes which can make them look spooky, hence their name meaning in Latin.

The most well-known is the ring-tailed lemur, named because of the white rings on its long black tail.

Plodd learned about lemurs for this question.
3. These little furry creatures of the mongoose family are often seen on look-out duty. What are they called?

Answer: Meerkats

Meerkats live in large family groups in the deserts of southern Africa. While most members of the group forage for food or bask in the sun, one or more of them will sit up straight on their hind legs and keep a sharp eye out for danger. This is very important as meerkats are prey for eagles, jackals and snakes.

Meerkats are mammals (and not in any way related to geese). Hamsters, gerbils and mice are all rodents and are also popular pets.

Question supplied by Fifiona81.
4. It's always fun to see the penguins at the zoo, especially at feeding time when you can watch them catching fish. In which of these countries could you see a penguin in the wild?

Answer: Australia

The majority of penguin species live south of the Equator, in countries like New Zealand, Argentina and Chile. The largest penguin of all, the Emperor, lives in a very cold place - the Antarctic.

rossian thinks Antarctica sounds too cold for her.
5. Which of these is NOT a petting animal in a zoo, and therefore unsafe for visitors to hand feed?

Answer: Tiger

Rabbits, goats and guinea pigs are all tame animals which can be hand fed in a zoo. They are known as petting animals. Other petting animals include ponies and donkeys.

Tigers normally live in the wild and hunt their own food. They are savage animals even in a zoo so it is VERY dangerous to feed them. Other dangerous zoo animals include cheetahs, lions and leopards.

Plodd is happy to say that she still has both of her hands.
6. One of the heaviest animals in the world, which animal can be identified by its thick skin and the sharp pointed horns on the top of its head?

Answer: Black rhino

The black rhinoceros (which is actually a sort of greyish-brown colour) is found in eastern and southern Africa and many zoos around the world. Sadly, this amazing animal is endangered in the wild because poachers have killed thousands of them for their horns. Black rhinos have two horns made of keratin - the same substance as human fingernails.

Black panthers, black squirrels and black swans don't have any horns at all.

Fifiona81 provided this question.
7. You can look at some stunning birds with long legs now. They are fed on a special diet, which keeps their feathers a pretty pink colour. What are they called?

Answer: Flamingos

Flamingos need to have a diet rich in a substance called carotene to keep their plumage the pink colour which is their distinguishing feature. In the wild, their feathers can be anything from a pale to a dark pink shade. The greater flamingo has the biggest range in the wild, living in Africa, parts of southern Europe and southern areas of Asia.

rossian isn't sure that pink would suit her as well as it does the flamingos.
8. What type of creature are muntjac, elk and caribou?

Answer: Deer

Deer are four legged mammals, sometimes with antlers or horns. The muntjac from Asia are also called barking deer because they make a barking noise to attract mates. An elk is one of the largest deer in the world. The caribou is a large deer native to North America.

Plodd studied several deer before creating this question.
9. This magnificent ape is the largest member of its family. It lives only in Africa in the wild. Which of these is it?

Answer: Gorilla

All the animals listed are called 'great apes', but the biggest of them all is the gorilla. There are two main species of gorilla, called the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla, named for the regions of Africa in which they live.

rossian looked at the apes, and they all looked back at her.
10. Which of these animals is an insectivore, meaning they like eating insects?

Answer: Aardvark

An aardvark is a medium-sized animal with a long snout. They use the trout to snuffle along the ground as they sniff out ants and other termites. They can eat up to 35,000 insects a day. They live in Africa which is why they are sometimes called the African ant bear.

Plodd wants you to know that she never eats insects.
