Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We begin with one of the world's most mysterious sites. Where can you visit the pictured ring of standing stones set within earthworks?

Answer: England

Somehow, Stonehenge was built between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago, and the massive stones were somehow transported a hundred miles from quarries in Wales to Salisbury Plain. What is equally remarkable is that the stones are aligned exactly so that on the Summer Solstice each year the rising sun shines directly through the central arch. Help from visitors from outer space, perhaps? Will we ever know?

Stonehenge was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
2. Completed in 1653, this magnificent white marble mausoleum is widely regarded as the world's best example of Mughal architecture. In which country can you visit this spectacular shrine?

Answer: India

The Taj Mahal (which means "crown of palaces" in Arabic) is located in the city of Agra in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned this huge structure to house the tomb of his favorite wife and it took 33 years to complete the building project.

More than three million people visit the Taj Mahal annually. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
3. From its completion in 1880 until 1884, this was the tallest building in the world. Today it is one of the most visited, with more than 6.5 million visitors annually. To which country must you travel to see it?

Answer: Germany

Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 and was halted with the structure only partially completed in 1473. Finally, in 1880, the largest Gothic church in northern Europe was finished. Its 515-foot tall twin spires made it temporarily the world's tallest building until it was overtaken by the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. just four years later. Located next to Cologne's main railway station, the cathedral suffered considerable bomb damage during World War II, although the spires survived intact. Post-war repair work was completed in 1956.

With more than 20,000 visitors a day, Cologne Cathedral is Germany's most-visited landmark. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
4. I've visited many of the amazing sites, both natural and man-made, around the world, and this is certainly one of the most breath-taking. In which country can you visit this destination not to be missed?

Answer: U.S.A.

The name says it all -- the Grand Canyon National Park. You know it will be big but until you stand on the edge looking down into the massive gorge carved out over centuries by the Colorado River, you are simply unprepared for quite how big it is. If you spend a few hours here, as the sun moves across casting different areas into light and shadow, you cannot help but marvel at the magnificent colors of the layered rock formations that make up the walls of the canyon.

If you only get the chance to visit one of the tremendous national parks in the western states of the U.S.A., choose between the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. Wonderful as many of the others are, they simply cannot compete with those two. The park was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
5. 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' ("The Smoke that Thunders" in the local language) is one of the world's most spectacular sites. Its combined height and width produce the largest sheet of falling water. These falls can be seen on the border between which two countries?

Answer: Zambia and Zimbabwe

These magnificent falls on the mighty Zambezi River were first seen by a European (David Livingstone), who named them for Queen Victoria, in 1855. Although not the highest or the widest waterfall in the world, with a height of 354 feet, Victoria Falls are about twice the height of Niagara Falls on the US/Canadian border. They are also almost twice as wide (5,604 feet) as the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara. In terms of combined height and width, the only other falls in the world that comes close to that of Victoria Falls is Iguazu Falls on the Argentine/Brazilian border.

Victoria Falls were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989.
6. Dating back to the 12th Century, the amazing temple complex pictured here still remains today the world's largest religious monument. To which country must you travel to see the sun rise over these ancient towers?

Answer: Cambodia

Angkor Wat (meaning "Temple City") is so important to Cambodia as a nation, that its image provides the centerpiece of the national flag. The finest example of Khmer architecture in the world, it was originally built as a Hindu temple but has for many centuries now been a major Buddhist shrine. The temple with its quincunx of towers stands on an island within a moat, surrounded by a 2.2-mile long outer wall. We spent in a week in the northern Cambodian city of Siem Reap in 2015, and whilst we went there primarily to see Angkor Wat, one of the architectural Wonders of the World, it was also a fabulous place to spend a vacation and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes to combine culture with sunshine.

Angkor Wat was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
7. The nearest town (and that town with a population of less than 30,000), is more than 200 miles away, so you will need to be a dedicated sightseer if you want to visit the world's largest monolith. In which country can you visit this sacred site of the Anangu people?

Answer: Australia

Ayres Rock, or Uluru as the locals call it, is a sacred site of the Anangu, the Aboriginal people who live in the southern part of Australia's Northern Territory. Situated within the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park, the two giant sandstone formations stand 16 miles apart in what most people would consider the middle of nowhere. Uluru stands 1,142 feet high with a circumference of 5.8 miles. The peak of Uluru is 2,831 feet above sea-level and, like an iceberg in water, most of its bulk lies unseen underground. Both Uluru and its smaller brother, Kata Tjuta (also called Mount Olga) are notable for their spectacular changes in colour, particularly when they glow red at dawn and sunset.

The Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
8. Most of the great sites in this quiz have been known to mankind for hundreds or even thousands of years. This one, though, was only re-discovered by a farmer digging a well in 1974. To which country must you travel to see this fabulously preserved army containing more than 8,000 beautifully-crafted figures?

Answer: China

The Terracotta Warriors and Horses (sometimes called the Terracotta Army) was buried along with the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, more than 2,200 years ago, in 210-209 B.C. The "army" consists of generals, warriors, chariots and horses. Divided into three pits, there are more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots (with 520 horses) and 150 cavalry horses. The soldiers vary in height, with the generals being the tallest. Non-military figures depicting officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians have also been discovered nearby.

To see this magnificent army you will need to travel to Xi'an (earlier westernized as Sian), the capital of Shaanxi province in northwestern China. The find was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
9. There has been human habitation on this site for more than 6,000 years, and the most famous structure built here was completed in 438 B.C. To which country must you travel to see this great symbol of western civilization?

Answer: Greece

Construction of the Parthenon began in 447 B.C. and it took 15 years to complete the temple to the Greek goddess Athena. Standing on the Acropolis overlooking the city of Athens, the Parthenon is the world's most significant surviving example of Classic Greek architecture. The building we see today replaced an earlier temple that was destroyed in 480 B.C. during the Persian invasion of Greece. During its long history, the temple has also been a Christian church and a mosque.

The Acropolis of Athens was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
10. One of the world's most famous squares is dominated by the pictured building, whose name means "fortress inside a city". The city's major streets all emanate from the square. To which country must you travel to visit this spectacular square?

Answer: Russia

Moscow's famous Red Square is dominated by former royal citadel and now the official residence of the Russian President. Elsewhere in the square, you can find Lenin's Mausoleum, the burial place of the founder of the Soviet Union. To the south is the brightly-domed Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, often called Saint Basil's Cathedral, although its official title is "Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat". It took six years to build, on the orders of Ivan the Terrible, and was completed in 1561. On the east side of the square is the massive GUM, the Russian state department store. On the north side of the square, you can visit the State Historical Museum.

Red Square was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
