Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of "The Sea of Adventure", why can the children not go back to school after the holidays?

Answer: They've had a bad case of measles

All the children have had measles during the holiday, and the doctor says it will do them good to get away for a while for some fresh air and a nice rest before going back to school.

The children are actually quite disappointed as they all love school, and they worry that Mrs Mannering might hire a governess for them, but once they find out they are going away with Bill, they cheer up.

"The Sea of Adventure" was first published in 1948.
2. How do the children in "The Sea of Adventure" put Miss Lawson off during her interview, so that she refuses the post of their Governess?

Answer: Show her some pet rats and a parrot

By the time Kiki the parrot has been encouraged to make her famous "Express train screech" and Philip has produced several rats from about his person, poor Miss Lawson is sure she could never cope with looking after the children full time. She makes her apologies to Mrs. Mannering and leaves immediately.
3. What name does Bill use when he is disguised as a bird watcher and takes the children to Scotland?

Answer: Dr. Walker

Bill wears unusual clothes, a false beard, and thick glasses to help disguise himself as Dr. Walker. He pretends to be an ornithologist (someone who studies birds) and takes the children with him on the expedition to help stop the baddies from realising it is him.
4. What is the name of the boat that Bill and the children go off round the islands in, in "The Sea of Adventure"?

Answer: Lucky Star

Bill's lovely motorboat is called the Lucky Star. The children are delighted with her, and she is well packed with plenty of delicious food and all their camping gear, when they go aboard at "a big seaside town" somewhere in Scotland.
5. Who is Bill's friend who meets him and the children with the boat, ready for them to set off on their expedition in "The Sea of Adventure"?

Answer: Henty

The boat is waiting for Bill and the children when they arrive. Because Bill has lots of contacts and is a secret policeman working for the Government, he can arrange all sorts of things. The boat is to help him "disappear" for a while and the children are along as a cover for his disguise as a birdwatcher.
6. What strange thing floats into Lucy Anne's hand, as she trails it in the water over the side of the boat, while Bill searches for a nice island to camp on, in "The Sea of Adventure"?

Answer: A little piece of orange peel

The idea of the children and Bill going to the Scottish islands on their expedition is that they will be right away from people - both "civilisation" and the baddies who are chasing Bill. The orange peel is fresh enough that it means someone has dropped it into the water pretty recently, and the party also hear an aeroplane flying overhead.

As usual :-D they have tumbled straight into a thrilling adventure!
7. After their tents blow away in the storm, where do the children take shelter in "The Sea of Adventure"?

Answer: In a huge puffin burrow underground

Philip finds the underground burrow by falling into it during the storm. The children spend the night there, and once the storm has passed and they can see properly, they decide to move all their things down into the burrow and use it as a hiding place in case the baddies come looking for them.
8. In "The Sea of Adventure" the children are very surprised when a lone man arrives in a small boat and claims to be an ornithologist. What does he tell them his name is?

Answer: Horace Tipperlong

The children are quite convinced that Mr. Tipperlong is one of the baddies, so they trap him down a puffin burrow and tell him that if he sticks his head out, they will "conk him one" with a stout stick! We eventually find out that Horace is just a wandering naturalist and not a baddie at all, so he has been most upset by the children's treatment of him.
9. What is in the mysterious packages hidden in the lagoon in "The Sea of Adventure"?

Answer: Guns

The children watch as an aeroplane drops several packages on parachutes, into the lagoon. They swim out and find one of the packages has broken open on the sharp rocks to reveal it is full of guns.
10. In "The Sea of Adventure", how do the children and Bill hide from the baddies, after Bill has escaped from their clutches?

Answer: In the sea among the birds

They cover their stolen boat with seaweed among the rocks, and then slip into sea. All that shows is their heads bobbing about, and there are so many sea birds around them that the baddies can't see them at all.
