Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first question is all Greek to me. What's next? alpha male > beta blocker > gamma radiation > ?

Answer: Delta Air Lines

Alpha, beta, gamma, and delta are the first four of the 24 letters in the Greek alphabet. It is still used in Greece. The letters are also used to name sororities and fraternities (the oldest of which is Phi Beta Kappa), and for scientific designations.

Strangely enough, it's omega that's last ("I am the alpha and the omega"), not zeta.
2. Hugh's honestly sad because he can't remember what's next. Do you know? William of Orange > Mellow Yellow > Green Monster > ?

Answer: True Blue

Orange, yellow, green, and blue are the middle colors of the rainbow, in order. Of course all seven are easily remembered with the classic mnemonic ROY G BIV.

Clues: Hugh's = hues, honest = true blue, sad = blue
3. The next one in the pattern requires some "basic" thinking skills. What's next? single handed > double-decker > triple threat > ?

Answer: Homer Simpson

Single, double, triple, and homer are different hits in baseball.

In baseball, a player who gets at least one of each is said to have "hit for the cycle". In the first hundred years of baseball, fewer than 300 Major League Baseball (MLB) players had achieved this feat. Hitting for the "natural cycle" is when a ballplayer hits them all in exact order. Only 11 MLB players did it in the 20th century.

Clue: basic = baseball.
4. The "good news" is you're playing fun trivia! What's next? Matthew Henson > on your mark > Cool Hand Luke > ?

Answer: Tommy John

Gospels, meaning "good news" (your clue), were written in the decades following the death of Jesus. The four Biblical Gospels are: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The Gospel of Thomas is a Coptic manuscript discovered in Egypt in 1945. The document is written on papyrus and is considered to be part of the apocrypha. It contains a list of 144 sayings attributed to Jesus. Most of the sayings are corroborated in the other Gospels, but some are entirely new.
5. My very energetic mother asked me what's next in this group. Ford Lincoln-Mercury > Venus Fly Trap > Middle Earth > ?

Answer: Mars Bar

Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are the first four "inner planets". Only Earth lies within the "Goldilocks Zone", because the temperatures here are neither too hot, nor too cold, but are just right to support life as we know it.

Clue: My very energetic mother (just served us newts) is one mnemonic to remember all eight planets.
6. The key? A minor clue gives major help. What's next. Han Solo > Dynamic Duo > power trio > ?

Answer: barbershop quartet

Solo, duo, trio and quartet are musical groups.

The other three answers are related to four, but not in a musical sense.

A power trio in rock music consists of electric guitar, bass, and drums.

Musical clues: minor, major and key.
7. "Dozen't" this one look easy? What's next? forced march > Pieces of April > Maggie May > ?

Answer: June bug

March, April, May and June are months of the year; but when it comes to October, I always wondered why it wasn't the eighth month ("oct"=8)...

The original Roman calendar had only ten months starting with March (Martius):
Martius (March)
Aprilis (April)
Maius (May)
Iunius (June)
Quintilis (quint = five) changed to Iulius (July) in 44 BCE to honor Julius Caesar
Sextilis (sext = six) changed to Augustus (August) in 8 BCE to honor Augustus
September (sept = seven)
October (oct = eight)
November (nov = nine)
December (dec = ten)

The Roman King Numa Pompilius added two months before Martius (March) around 713 BCE. This upset the prefixes of all the months beginning with Quintilis so that they did not correspond with the original prefixes.

Clue: Dozen't: there are a dozen months.
8. Kings play checkers (or chess) with what's next... Thy Kingdom come > phylum Arthropoda > class action suit > ?

Answer: Fry order cook

Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, (Family, Genus Species): it's the biological classification system that was first organized by Carl Linnaeus, the father of modern taxonomy (and ecology).

Here's one common mnemonic to remember the 7 major groups (followed by the classification of humans):
(Kings) Kingdom: Animalia
(Play) Phylum: Chordata
(Chess) Class: Mammalia
(On) Order: Primates
(Funny) Family: Hominidae
(Green) Genus: Homo
(Squares) Species: H. sapiens
9. Hand it over and no one gets hurt... What's next? index cards > Middle Ages > Ring Cycle > ?

Answer: Little Dipper

Thumb, index (pointer), middle, ring, and little (pinky) are the fingers in order! About 1 in 500 humans are born with more than the regular number of digits (polydactyl).

The "Ring Cycle" is a series of four operas by Wagner.

Clue: Hand
10. It may be a little turbulent to get this right unless you're submersed in the question. Let's call the tower to see what comes next? Hotel California > India ink > Romeo and Juliet > ?

Answer: kilo class submarine

Hotel, India, Juliet, and Kilo are in the middle of the NATO phonetic alphabet starting with Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta... all the way to Zulu.

This system is commonly used in the airline industry and military to transmit critical information clearly.

Clue: Turbulence, tower, and submersing are related to submarines.
