Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finland is bordered by three countries. Which are they?

Answer: Russia, Sweden and Norway

Finland's longest border is with Russia, which is in excess of 1,300kms. Helsinki is the country's capital.
2. From 1998 to 2012, what Finnish company was the largest manufacturer of mobile phones?

Answer: Nokia

Nokia is a small city in southeastern Finland. The company started out as the Finnish Rubber Works Ltd and Finnish Cable Works Ltd. It was not until the 1970s that the cable division became involved in telecommunications. There are no public telephones in Finland, but it is estimated there are 4.7 million mobile phone users (2014 data).
3. The area of Finland (sq.km) is approximately the same size as Poland, which had a 2013 population of 38.5 million. What was the population of Finland in 2013?

Answer: 5.4 million

The area of Finland is 303,900 sq.kms. There are over 180,000 lakes in Finland. The largest is Saimaa, which is the fourth largest lake in Europe.
4. Finnish Independence Day is 6th December 1917. Who gave Finland independence on this day?

Answer: Russia

Finland was ruled by Sweden for 400 years up until 1809, when defeated by Alexander I of Russia. It then became a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire. Finland was granted independence by Russia after the 1917 Russian Revolution.
5. When fined for breaking the speed limit in Finland, the fine amount depends on what?

Answer: The amount of your annual income

In 2004, a wealthy driver was actually fined 170,000 euros for driving 80km per hour in a 40km speeding limit. Headlights at all times of the day have been compulsory in Finland since 1982.
6. When toasting someone or saying "to your health" in the English language, speakers normally say "Cheers". What is the word or phrase in Finnish?

Answer: Kippis

"Skål" is in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. "Terviseks" (pronounced "tervisex" which is sometimes pronounced by foreigners as no sex) is the word in Estonian. "Na zdorvie" is Russian for "cheers", which is similar to Polish and Slovenian.
7. What is the Finnish saying when someone makes an outlandish comment or statement?

Answer: They let a frog out of their mouth.

The Finnish statement is "päästää sammakoita suustaan". The origin of this saying is a little unclear. A number of Finnish idioms often reflect Mother Nature and the Finnish homeland.
8. After WWII, Finland was the only country to fully pay its war reparation costs. Who were these costs paid to?

Answer: Russia

Finland was invaded by Russia in 1939 (The Winter War), and even though Finnish troops were outnumbered 10:1, they held back the might of the Russian forces. Finland's army then sided with Germany to repel the Russians back to Leningrad. Consequently after WWII, Finland was then associated with Germany in its war against Russia. Finland was never recognised as Nazi country. It simply wanted to repel the Russian army from its borders. After WWII, Finland rejected the Marshall Plan in apparent deference to Soviet Union desires as they had a 1,300km border with Russia.
9. There are two official languages in Finland. What are they?

Answer: Finnish and Swedish

Sweden ruled Finland for over 400 years, and many members of the Finnish aristocracy during the 1800s were Swedish-speaking. In the modern day, only about 5% of the Finnish population can claim Swedish as their mother tongue. There are various towns and areas on the Finnish west coast where only Swedish is spoken.
10. Finland has produced many Olympic Gold Medalists in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. However, there is one athlete that stands head and shoulders above the rest and was the first to win many medals. Who is widely considered to be Finland's greatest athlete?

Answer: Paavo Nurmi

In three Olympics from 1920-1928, Nurmi (1897-1973) won nine gold and three silver medals. A bronze statue of him is at the front of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. He carried the torch into the stadium at the start of the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. Viren (athletics), Nykanen (Ski Jumping) and Kolehmainen (athletics) all achieved four gold medals in the Olympics.

Modern day sporting heroes have been Finland's ice hockey (the national sport) players who have succeeded in the NHL: Jari Kurri, Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu (he was the first European to captain the Montreal Canadiens and held the position for ten years).
