Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before it could be admitted to the union it had to ban polygamy. Which US state was this?

Answer: Utah

The Utah Territory was created after the United States gained control over most of the western half of the country, after the Mexican-American War (1846-48). It was then settled by members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, aka Mormons. Part of their beliefs was the principle of "spiritual wifery", more commonly known as polygamy. This practice horrified the rest of the United States, and even resulted in a short war, ordered by President Buchanan. Public opinion, and a series of enacted laws, tried to outlaw the practice, but it was not until 1890 that the LDS Church renounced polygamy. Utah was finally admitted as the 45th state. Utah, and its capital, Salt Lake City, are both still heavily populated by people of the Mormon faith.

This question was written by ozzz2002, who feels that the penalty for polygamy is having many mothers-in-law!
2. Fairy bread has been a favourite at children's parties in Australia since the 1920s. Apart from bread, what is the main ingredient in fairy bread?

Answer: Hundreds and thousands

Fairy bread is usually made with white bread and plenty of butter to adhere the hundreds and thousands which are called Sprinkles in the US. The bread is then cut into triangles. For several decades it was seen at almost every child's birthday party but is rarely seen now.

This question was propelled into the quiz by a sugar-fuelled Phoenix Rising member lg549 after demolishing several slices of fairy bread.
3. This Arkansas-born singer sang about Galveston, Phoenix and even mentioned Broadway. Which place in Kansas was in the title of another hit song for this singer?

Answer: Wichita

Glen Campbell (1936-2017) was a versatile entertainer! Originally a session guitarist, he played with a wide variety of musicians including Frank Sinatra, The Everly Brothers and Bing Crosby (and many, many more). His first major hit song was 'Gentle on my Mind' (1967) followed later that year by 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix'. Both songs won Grammy Awards. This was followed in 1968 by 'Wichita Lineman' and then in 1975 his biggest hit, 'Rhinestone Cowboy' (which included the line 'I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway'). He also was a talented movie actor and hosted TV variety shows.

Much off-key singing, which fortunately will never be made public, arose from Phoenix Rising team member MikeMaster99's creation of this question.
4. What Canadian actress played the part of Miss Moneypenny in 14 "James Bond" films from 1962 to 1985?

Answer: Lois Maxwell

Lois Maxwell was born in 1927 and her first credited film role came in 1947 for "That Hagen Girl" for which she was awarded a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer. She lived in Italy for part of the 1950s and in 1962 she appeared alongside Sean Connery in the first Eon-produced "James Bond" movie, "Dr. No" as Miss Moneypenny. In the "James Bond" films the character of Miss Moneypenny was the secretary to M, the head of MI6. In the films James Bond often flirted with Miss Moneypenny while she was trying to give him important information. Lois Maxwell last played Miss Moneypenny in 1985 in "A View to a Kill" alongside Roger Moore as James Bond.

This question was shaken, not stirred, into the quiz by Phoenix Rising team member Triviaballer.
5. If I followed my home town sporting clubs and I supported the Royals and the Chiefs yet still liked the Sacramento Kings and The New Jersey Devils, which city do I live in?

Answer: Kansas City

Kansas City Royals are a Major League Baseball team that joined the American League as an expansion team. They won their second World Series in 2015 after winning their first in 1985. They reached the final but lost in 1980 and 2014.
The Kansas City Chiefs started as the Dallas Texans in 1960 in the American Football League. In 1963 they transferred to Kansas City. They won their second Super Bowl in 2020 (Super Bowl LIV) defeating the San Francisco Giants. They won their first in 1969 against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Sacramento Kings, a National Basketball Association team, relocated there in 1985 after being the Kansas City Kings 1975-85 and the Kansas City-Omaha Kings for the three years before that. They originally started as the Rochester Seagrams in 1923.

The Kansas City Scouts were a professional hockey club founded in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1974. They moved to Denver, Colorado in 1976 as the Colorado Rockies but were poor performers, so in 1982 moved to New Jersey as the Devils. They did not win their first Stanley Cup until they became the Devils. Their first was in 1994-5.

This question was co-written by Phoenix Rising long-time Kansan resident Dragonfrog and 1nn1 who is yet to see the Yellow Brick Road.
6. Sidekicks imply supporting a bigger star. However this star played a sidekick as the following characters: Lucius Fox, Ellis Boyd Redding, Hoke Colburn and Ned Logan. Who is this movie star?

Answer: Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman began his career as a dancer in the 1964 World Fair. By the 1980s he was earning many supporting roles, usually in a wise avuncular role. The world took notice when he was nominated for a Best Supporting Oscar when he, as Hoke Colburn, was driving Miss Daisy (Jessica Tandy won the Oscar for Best Actress playing Miss Daisy). Perhaps Mr Freeman's most prominent role was as Red (Ellis Boyd Redding) in "The Shawshank Redemption' (1994) He also had major roles in the "Dark Knight" trilogy as Lucius Fox, Bruce Wayne's business manager at Wayne Enterprises and as Ned Logan in "Unforgiven" (1992).

This question was penned by Phoenix Rising sidekick 1nn1.
7. Darwin is Australia's most northerly city, but it is in the Northern Territory which is not a state. What is Australia's most northerly city situated in a state?

Answer: Cairns

Cairns is a city in the far north of the state of Queensland and is a popular holiday destination with access to the Great Barrier Reef. Of the choices listed, Cooktown, which is also in Queensland, is further north than Cairns but is defined as a town not a city. Broome, in Western Australia, is also defined as a town and is slightly further south than Cairns. Mount Isa, which is also in Queensland, is a city but is further south than Cairns.

Queensland and Western Australia are the only states in the north of Australia. The northernmost city in Western Australia is Karratha.

Phoenix Rising team member lg549 took a measured approach to this question and fortunately was able to provide some direction.
8. Which of the following is *NOT* true about Melbourne?

Answer: MacRobertson's Steam Confectionery Works invented the Cherry Ripe in 1924, Crunchie in 1929 and the Freddo Frog in 1930.

While each of Cherry Ripe, Crunchie and Freddo Frog confectioneries are made in Australia, and Cherry Ripe and Freddo Frogs originated with MacRobertsons, Crunchie was a product originally launched in the UK by J. S. Fry & Sons. The Cadbury company eventually took over the making of all these confections.

Melbourne was founded by John Batman, and was for a short time known by the name Batmania. The equestrian events were held in Sweden for the 1956 Olympics, due to quarantine reasons; the Games were opened by Duke of Edinburgh.

Vegemite originated in Melbourne in 1922 and it's still the only place where it's made. When spreading it, the trick is not to spread it too thickly. And yes, I take a tube of it in my suitcase when I travel. I don't want to risk being without it!

This delicious question was brought to you by the favourite city of Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid.
9. The US navy's light cruiser USS Phoenix survived Pearl Harbor, but was initially decommissioned in 1946. Which one of the following is *NOT* a fact about the ship?

Answer: Served in the Vietnam War as USS Tiger

The USS Phoenix was decommissioned at the end of the Second World War after serving in the Pacific theatre and the Philippines campaign. It was sold to the Argentine navy in 1951 and initially known as the 17 de Octubre - Argentina's 'Loyalty Day' that marks the release of Juan Peron and beginning of the Peronism political movement. It was renamed General Belgrano in 1956, a year after the coup that ousted Peron from office.

The ship remained in commission until 2 May 1982, when it was sunk by a torpedo fired by the British nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror during the Falklands War with the loss of 323 lives. Prior to that date, no nuclear-powered submarine had ever fired on and sunk another vessel.

Team member Phoenix Rising's Fifiona81 torpedoed the original Zoom question to enable a new one to arise from the ashes just like a Phoenix.
10. Perth, Australia is one of the most isolated cities in the world. Which national capital is closest?

Answer: Dili

Located on the southwest coast of the Australian continent, Perth is the capital of the state of Western Australia. A drive to the east coast is a long and straight drive through a desolate expanse. Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is the nearest city (over 2,100 km or 1,305 mi away) with a population of over 100,000 people.

Dili in Timor-Leste is the closest national capital, being 2,229 km (1,727 mi) away, as the crow flies. There are 3,095 km (1,923 mi) between Perth and Canberra. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are actually north of (and therefore more distant than) Jakarta, which is the second-closest national capital at 3,008 km (1,869 mi), removed.

Phoenix Rising member JCSon gives props to Perth for social distancing before social distancing was cool.
11. Which animals link Detroit, Richmond, Hull City and Northcote?

Answer: Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are a Major League Baseball franchise from Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1894, their first four World Series titles came in 1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984. The club plays in the American League Central Division. In their navy blue, orange and white uniforms, these Tigers play their home games at Comerica Park in Downtown Detroit.

Richmond is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. The Richmond Tigers are an Australian Rules Football club playing in the AFL (Australian Football League). The club began in 1885 and won ten Premierships in the twentieth century. Finals' victories in 2017 and 2019 repeated a feat achieved three times previously, of winning two titles in three years. Proudly wearing yellow and black, these Tigers play their home games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Soccer Football is Hull City's sports code. Hull is in Yorkshire in north-eastern England. Hull City Association Football Club began in 1904 and competes in the second tier of the English Football League, known as the Championship. In the 2007-2008 season the club won promotion to the top flight for the first time. They were FA (Football Association) Cup finalists in 2014. In their black and amber strip, these Tigers play their home games at the KCOM Stadium in the city of Kingston upon Hull.

The Northcote Tigers are a Rugby League Club from the North Shore of Auckland City in New Zealand. The club was founded in 1910 and were originally known as the Northcote Warriors and then the Northcote Ramblers. They play in Auckland Rugby League's Fox Memorial competition. In their gold and black colours, these Tigers play their home games at the Birkenhead War Memorial Park.

Phoenix Rising team member psnz took delight in taming this question and was left purring at the result.
12. Movie Anachronisms (dinosaurs and cavemen): "One Million B.C." (1940) and "One Million Years B.C." (1966). Who were the respective female stars of these two films?

Answer: Carole Landis and Raquel Welch

An anachronism is when something occurs or is found in an inappropriate time period, such as a gladiator in a movie wearing a wristwatch. Dinosaurs were last present on Earth about 66 million years ago during the Mesozoic Era. This era is divided into the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. By contrast, homo sapiens (modern humans) did not appear until much later: 200,000 to 300,000 years ago. So it is fair to say that in 'One Million B.C.' there would not have been any dinosaurs or people.

But Hollywood never let historical accuracy get in the way of a story. "One Million B.C." (1940) was remade as "One Million Years B.C." (1966) and again as "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" (1970). The plots are based on people from different tribes falling in love and the problems that ensue from those relationships.

Carole Landis (1919-1948), born Frances Ridste, appeared in more than 50 films between 1937 and 1948 when she committed suicide, aged 29. "One Million B.C." was her stepping-stone from bit-player to movie star. She was cast as the female lead, Loana, by directors Hal Roach and Hal Roach Jr. and the film was a popular success.

Raquel Welch (1940- ), born Jo Raquel Tejada, was an icon of strong female film characters in the 1960s and 1970s. Starting in 1956, she has more than 70 film and television appearances to her credit. The 1966 version was directed by Don Chaffey and like its predecessor, well received.

Rising Phoenix's psnz dug this question up from the archives and was able to help with its preservation.
13. In "The Shawshank Redemption", the passage of time is marked by the posters on the wall of Andy's cell. They depict three women including Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe. Who was the third?

Answer: Raquel Welch

"The Shawshank Redemption" was a film starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. It is based on a short story by Stephen King called "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption".

Andy Dufresne (Robbins) is serving two life sentences in the Shawshank State Penitentiary. He funnily enough doesn't want to spend so long there so decides to tunnel out. He makes friends with Ellis 'Red' Redding (Freeman) who gets him a hammer and a poster. He hides the opening to his tunnel behind the Rita Hayworth poster.

As time passes, 19 years of tunneling in total, the poster is changed to Marilyn Monroe and then again to Raquel Welch. The posters are a progression of pinups through the term Dufresne is serving starting in 1947.

Rita Hayworth was at her pin up best in the 1940s, Marilyn Monroe represents the 1950s and Raquel Welch hit her stride in the 1960s. Farrah Fawcett Majors was the biggest selling poster girl of the 1970s and would probably have been the next selection if the tunnel hadn't worked.

This question has been brought to you by smpdit, still serving her life sentence in Phoenix Rising's Naughty Corner.
14. Two canine characters, Buck and Fang, met on a street corner. Assuming their owners were the authors of the books with the canine stars, which two people met?

Answer: London and Rowling

Buck is the lead character in Jack London's 1903 novel "The Call of the Wild". He is stolen from his owner's home in California and sold off as a sled dog in Alaska. To survive, needs dictate that he turns feral and dominates other dogs as he adapts to the harsher environment and, eventually, responds to his primordial instincts to become the leader of a pack.

Fang, not to be confused with Jack London's wolf cub "White Fang", is the complete opposite to Buck. He makes his first appearance in JK Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (1997) as the pet of Rubeus Hagrid. A large boarhound, he accompanies Hagrid into the Forbidden Forest but generally enjoys the comforts of Hagrid's hut.

Charles Dickens has introduced us to a number of dogs in his novels though the most notable would be Jip from "David Copperfield" (1849) and Bulls-Eye, the loyal dog belonging to the brutish Bill Sikes in "Oliver Twist" (1837). Frank Gipson gave us "Old Yeller" in 1956.

This piece of puppy love was brought to you by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19, proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
15. The Interstate Highway System criss-crosses the United States. Detroit and Miami are near the northern and southern extremes of the country yet are connected by a single highway. Which one?

Answer: I-75

The interstate highways are numbered systematically. Odd numbers run north-south and even numbers run east-west. Numbers ending in "0" or "5" traverse the continent. Low numbers start in the west and south. I-75 runs from the north-west outskirts of Miami, bisects Florida and Georgia, travels through the eastern parts of Tennessee and Kentucky, north through Cincinnati and Dayton in Ohio and into Michigan. It passes through Detroit then northward to the Mackinac Bridge where it crosses the strait between Lakes Huron and Michigan before it approaches the Canadian border at Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge. At 1,787 miles (2,875 km), it is the second longest north-south Interstate in the US.

This question was driven in by Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1 who, in 11 trips to the states, has covered nearly all the entire route of the I-75. A proposed trip in 2020 to drive from Detroit to Sault Ste. Marie would have completed the route but borders were closed....
16. The USA has quite a few Halls of Fame. Where is the NASCAR version?

Answer: Charlotte, NC

The National Baseball Hall of Fame (1936) is in Cooperstown, New York. Ohio is home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1963) in Canton and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1983) is in Cleveland. The NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina is newer, having been established in 2010 following site selection and construction.

NASCAR is the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. In addition to drivers, the Hall of Fame honours crew, owners, broadcasters and others contributing to the sport. The inaugural inductions included drivers Dale Earnhardt, Junior Johnson and Richard Petty.

After leading for most of the event, JCSon handed the wheel to co-driver psnz who saw this question through to the chequered flag.
17. The maple leaf design of the Canadian flag is quite distinctive, but the prior flag had much in common with its Commonwealth cousins. What was the main colour of this pre-1965 flag?

Answer: Red

The National Flag of Canada with its distinctive maple leaf design was introduced in 1965 to replace the Canadian Red Ensign, which had been in use as an unofficial national flag since the late-19th century. The Canadian Red Ensign features the shield section of Canada's coat of arms on a red background, with the Union Flag of Great Britain in the upper left corner (like the flags of other Commonwealth nations such as Australia, New Zealand and Fiji).

Like the British Red Ensign on which it was based, the Canadian Red Ensign was originally a maritime flag for use on Canadian registered ships. However, it was also commonly used on land long before it was officially recognised for use on Canadian government buildings in 1945. Technically, prior to 1965 the official national flag of Canada was the Royal Union Flag - the Canadian name for Britain's Union Flag or "Union Jack".

This question was waved into the quiz by Fifiona81.
18. Most animals have symmetrical features. This being said, how many hearts does an octopus have?

Answer: 3

Yes, three! An octopus has an interesting array of characteristics. It has three hearts (one for general systemic circulation, and two that drive the gills). In addition, the blood contains a high concentration of copper-based hemocyanins (proteins that transport oxygen) which gives the blood a blue color.

The octopus also has what some consider to be nine brains - a central brain and eight autonomous neuron clusters (one per arm) that can control reflexes independently from the main brain.

This creepy, zoological question brought to you by Phoenix Rising team member, mike32768, sometimes called Mikie-five-numbers.
19. London has hosted the Olympic Games three times including 1948 and 2012. Who from the following options is the only person who could hypothetically have seen both those Olympics?

Answer: Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926 so would have been alive for both the games mentioned. The other London Olympics took place in 1908, long before she was born.

For the 2012 occasion she surprised everyone by participating in more than her normal attendance at the opening ceremony by appearing in a film directed by Danny Boyle. In this she was escorted by James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, and her corgis. She arrived at the arena by helicopter where she ostensibly parachuted down. Not bad for an octogenarian.

Prince Charles was born in November 1948 so missed it by a couple of months.
Princess Margaret was born in time for the 1948 Olympics but died in 2002.
Prince Andrew was born in 1960.

This question was brought to you by smpdit, who dislikes sport so much she left the country during the London Olympics 2012 (now you start to understand why smpdit is still in the Phoenix Rising Naughty Corner).
20. My book titles have all been scrambled so that the first word of one title has combined with the second of another. If one scrambled title is "Bleak Expectations", what is its corresponding scrambled title?

Answer: Great House

"Bleak House" and "Great Expectations" are two novels by Charles Dickens. The former was originally published as a serial satirizing the British judicial system. The latter tells the story of the rise and fall of an orphan boy and how he finds happiness in life.

Phoenix Rising member JCSon feels like "Bleak Expectations" is a suitable title for the year that is 2020.
