Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (Entertainment) Like many comic book heroes, the powers of Marvel's Iceman, have been summed up in his name. However can you tell me the name of the comic in which this frosty fellow first made his appearance?

Answer: X-Men

Iceman's real name was Robert Louis Drake, known affectionately as Bobby to his family and friends. Debuting in September 1963, he appeared in the very first of Marvel's X-Men comics, as a mutant with cryokinetic powers. Prior to joining Professor Charles Xavier and his X-Men, Bobby lived happily in Long Island, New York, until an incident with a local bully revealed his powers. Having encased the bully in a block of ice, Bobby was targeted by a group of angry townspeople, which led to him being imprisoned for his own protection.
2. (Geography) Traditionally speaking, the UK's inhabitants have always considered one particular region of Finland to be the home of Father Christmas. What region is this?

Answer: Lapland

Over the years, Lapland has earned itself a legendary reputation, particularly in the eyes of the UK's children. Indeed generations of British children have desired to visit this mythical and magical land, in order to meet the much loved and revered figure of Father Christmas.

As one of the regions of Finland, Lapland's climate has always been severe, with temperatures rarely rising above freezing. Also, in 2002, along with most other European countries, Finland traded in their old currency, (the Finnish markka), and adopted the Euro.
3. (Hobbies) One US company once marketed their very own hot dog flavoured ice cream.

Answer: True

Although vanilla, strawberry and chocolate are among the most popular flavours of ice cream ever made, over the years some interesting concoctions have been produced. Garlic, pumpkin, avocado and even hot dog flavour have all made their way onto the market, each with varying degrees of success.

But it was Arizona based company, Udder Delights, who were responsible for the creation of hot dog flavoured ice cream, and even went on to create a potato chip flavour. However despite the popularity of ice cream, its origin has always been widely disputed.

Indeed while some have claimed that it was the Roman Emperor, Nero, (back in the 4th century B.C.) who first "discovered" it, others have argued that it was actually first invented in China, as far back as 200 B.C.
4. (Humanities) In slang terms, the word "ice" has a whole host of different meanings. Taken as a verb it translates to, "to kill", or "to cover with icing", but as a noun it has a completely different meaning. When taken as a noun, "ice", relates to a very expensive item. With this in mind, which of the following would you expect to receive?

Answer: Diamonds

As with many other words in the English language, the term, "ice", has a whole host of different meanings. Yet the origin of this word lies in the field of science, and is predominantly used to describe frozen water. Nevertheless, as mentioned above, it also has a whole host of other meanings.

The word "diamond" comes from the Greek, "adámas", which means "unbreakable". Formed deep below the Earth's surface, diamonds are made up of pure carbon and rank tenth on the Mohs scale, making them the hardest of all naturally occurring minerals. As it can take millions of years for them to form naturally, they are very expensive and are highly prized by those who buy them.
5. (Movies) In 2002, 20th Century Fox released a new film, featuring characters such as Sid and Manny, which proved to be surprisingly successful at the box office. Which animated film was this, which also spawned several sequels?

Answer: Ice Age

The 2002 film, "Ice Age", revolved around a group of animals' attempts to escape the Ice Age. However their task became even more daunting when they found themselves the sole protectors of a human baby. After the death of the baby's mother, Sid the sloth, Manny the woolly mammoth, Scrat the squirrel and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger were forced to brave the elements in order to reunite the baby with his father.
6. (Music) In August 1990, Vanilla Ice, (whose real name is Robert Van Winkle), released a rather "cool" single, which went on to cause a great deal of controversy. What was the name of this song, which incidentally, also hit the coveted number one spot in a variety of different countries?

Answer: Ice Ice Baby

Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" was released in 1990, as the B side to his single, "Play That Funky Music". However as the latter song sank like a stone, the former proved to be surprisingly popular. As the song sampled Queen and David Bowie's collaboration, "Under Pressure", and did not, (initially), pay royalties to them, Vanilla Ice found himself in hot water, despite claiming that his melody was slightly different.

However some years later he did succumb to the pressure, and gave song-writing credit to Bowie and Queen.
7. (Sports) Sadly, eating disorders have always been a part the world of sport. However there are some sports which are more likely than others to produce athletes with eating disorders. Indeed Jamie Silverstein, Nancy Kerrigan and Eva-Maria Fitze, are all Olympic competitors who have battled with anorexia or bulimia. But which demanding sport is it that links these three women?

Answer: Figure Skating

Figure skating, (along with gymnastics and diving) is a sport which, statistically, is among those most likely to produce an athlete with an eating disorder. Due to the nature of these sports, along with others such as cheer leading, horse riding and ski jumping, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the physique of the athlete.

As a result, some competitors feel pressured to maintain a slim figure, and sometimes develop eating disorders as a result. Figure skater, Eva-Maria Fitze, went on to develop bulimia after becoming German champion at the tender age of fourteen.

Moreover American figure skating champion, Jamie Silverstein, suffered from anorexia for five years before finally seeking help. Finally, two-time Olympic medallist, Nancy Kerrigan, also developed an eating disorder, although she attributed it to the stress she suffered following a violent attack on her in 1994.
8. (Television) Which chilled American rapper joined the "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" franchise in 2000, as Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola?

Answer: Ice-T

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" first appeared on television in September 1999, and focused on the investigation of crimes of a sexual nature. Ice-T, (whose real name is Tracy Marrow), joined the cast in 2000, as Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola, and first appeared in the season two episode, "Wrong is Right".
9. (World) Which now infamous passenger steamship struck an iceberg and sank during its maiden voyage, despite its supposedly extensive safety features?

Answer: RMS Titanic

On the 10th of April, 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail for New York, on its maiden voyage. Despite being designed by some of the most talented and experienced engineers of the age, 1,517 people died, after the ship struck an iceberg, four days into its voyage.
10. (For Children) "Fire and Ice" is a novel written by Kate Cary, under a pen name. It is the second book of the popular "Warriors" series, which follows several Clans of wild cats: ThunderClan, WindClan, ShadowClan and RiverClan. However most people know Cary by the assumed name she used to publish her work. What is it?

Answer: Erin Hunter

Writing as Erin Hunter, Kate Cary's second novel in the "Warriors" series, "Fire and Ice" revolves around the newly promoted cats, Fireheart and Graystripe. During the course of the novel, Graystripe, who is a member of ThunderClan, falls in love with Silverstream, who is a member of RiverClan.

Kate Cary, along with Cherith Baldry, Victoria Holmes, and Tui T. Sutherland, have all written and published novels under the shared pen name, Erin Hunter.
