Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was counting the eggs in my basket when a farmer came along and asked, "How many funnels were on RMS Titanic, plus the number of rooms on a standard Cluedo game board (not including the cellar) plus the number the Roman numerals LXXXVII represent". He was testing to see if I was a trivia egghead and so what answer did I give in response?

Answer: 100

Answer 4+9+87=100

There were four funnels on the infamous Titanic ship, although only three were functioning on that fateful day it sailed out of Southampton harbour on 10 April 1912. There are nine rooms on a standard Cluedo game board. These are the ballroom, billiard room, conservatory, dining room, hall, kitchen, library, lounge and study. The cellar is the central room where the answers are hidden away in an envelope until the end of the game. The Roman numerals LXXXVII represent the number 87. (L=50, XXX=30, VII=7)

2. What is the result if you add the number of steps in a novel by John Buchan, the atomic number of antimony, and the number of legs on Miss Muffet's nightmarish visitor?

Answer: 98

"The Thirty-Nine Steps" which has also been made into several films, is a 1915 novel by John Buchan. It first began to appear as a serial in that year but October saw it published in book form. This adventure-spy story sees the protagonist, Richard Hannay, on the run from a series of murders he didn't commit and reluctantly being drawn into saving Europe from an anarchist's plot, in the lead-up to the First World War. Antimony's atomic number is 51. Its properties have been known since ancient times, but it was only used in the manufacture of cosmetics during that time. Today it and its alloys are used as flame-retardants, to make bullets, batteries, cables, diodes, and in the manufacture of some medicines. And those eeky creepy creatures known as spiders, one of which almost scared Miss Muffet (a distant relative of mine) to death, have eight horrible, hairy legs.

With a twinkle in his eye, he said, "Give me the number of American colonies that declared independence from Britain in 1776, plus the number of English Kings named John, plus the number of Horsemen of the Apocalypse." How many chickens did the smart aleck want?

Answer: 18

Thirteen colonies rebelled against Britain in 1776. There has been only one English king with the regnal name of John, mainly, I suspect, because he was such a loser (Magna Carta, and all that). And there were four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the Book of Revelation: Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death. (Don't we have all four of these in the present times?)

4. While waiting for my hens to lay, I amused myself by wondering what I would get if I added together the number of Psalms in the Bible (Roman Cathlic edition) + the number of days per week The Beatles said were not enough to show they cared + the number of children Queen Victoria had. I got it right ... can you?

Answer: 167

There are 150 Psalms in the Bible, comprising the Book of Psalms. Their writing is attributed primarily to King David, and also to Moses, Solomon, and others.

The Beatles song I referred to is "Eight Days a Week".
"Eight days a week, I love you.
Eight days a week is not enough to show I care."

Victoria and Albert had a total of 9 children:
Victoria (Empress of Germany)
Albert Edward (known as Bertie - Prince of Wales, then King Edward VII)
Alice (Grand Duchess of Hesse)
Alfred (Duke of Edinburgh, then Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha)
Helena (Princess Christian)
Louise (Duchess of Argyll)
Arthur (Duke of Connaught and Streathearn)
Leopold (Duke of Albany)
Beatrice (Princess Henry of Battenberg)

5. Et voila, it is I, the Inkredible K, master magician! Quickly now, tell me the number of suited cards in a deck, plus the number of shells in a shell game, plus the number of things a magician claims to have up his or her sleeve.

Answer: 55

Sim Sala Bim! The answer is 55. While there are a total of 54 cards in a deck (including jokers), there are 52 suited cards. The traditional shell game uses three shells and any magician would claim to have nothing (zero) up his or her sleeve.

6. I'm responsible for putting the day's profits from our chicken farm in the safe and I've forgotten the combination! Luckily Creedy left me a "cheat sheet". First I must rotate the dial to left to show the number of drummers drumming in the famous song "The Twelve Days of Christmas", next to the right the only prime number between 19 and 29 and finally to the left reversing the previous number. Oh, this is just too much for me! What combination will open our safe?

Answer: L 12- R 23- L 32

Joseph Loch is credited with inventing the modern combination lock for Tiffany's Jewelers in New York City in 1878.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" has been used in European and Scandinavian traditions since the 16th century although the exact date of it's origin is unknown. The song has endured over the years, in part, because it can be performed and recorded without obtaining rights.

In accounting, transposition errors are usually easily found because all of them are divisible by 9. For example, while reviewing your trial balance in which debits and credits should be equal you find a difference of 396. Your credits totaled 125 and your debits totaled 521. 521 minus 125 equals 396 which is divisible by 9!

7. If you add the number for elves to the number for dwarfs to the number for men and the number for the Dark Lord you get a total of how many rings that were knocking about in Middle Earth?

Answer: 3+7+9+1=20

The book ("The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien) gives you a handy verse to remember who had what on whose finger!

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

8. Some film stars are almost as well known for their multiple marriages as they are for their on screen performances. How many marriages did these famous women have between them? (Count both of Elizabeth Taylor's marriages to Richard Burton separately please.) Elizabeth Taylor + Judy Garland + Ava Gardner

Answer: 16

Elizabeth Taylor was married eight times, although she did marry Richard Burton twice. Burton and Taylor divorced in 1975 and remarried in 1975 to divorce again in 1976. Ms Taylor was divorced from all of her husbands except for husband number three, Mike Todd. Mr Todd was killed in a crash in his own private plane in Mexico less than nine months after their wedding. His plane was called 'Lucky Liz'.

Judy Garland married five men in her relatively short life. She was found dead by husband number five, Mickey Deans, in a house they were renting in Chelsea, London. England. The coroner's verdict was that Judy Garland had died from an accidental overdose of barbiturates. She was just 47 years old.

Ava Gardner was comparatively restrained in only marrying three men. Her first husband was Mickey Rooney. They married when he was 19 and she was 21 but the marriage only lasted a year. Ms Gardner's second marriage was to band leader Artie Shaw, which also ended in divorce after just a year. Her third husband was Frank Sinatra to whom she was married for six years. It is reported that the couple faced hostility from the public, the Catholic Church and some of the media because Mr Sinatra had left his wife and children to marry Ava Gardner.

9. I need help from you clever people to sort out a simple maths teaser, not only with the addition, but in determining the numbers to be added. I need to add a) the highest score that can be achieved with three darts on a standard darts board, b) the German number dreizehn and c) the number of keys on a modern standard piano. I'm hoping you can help me by choosing the correct answer below?

Answer: 281

The game of darts can be played individually or in teams, and each game usually starts with a total of 501 on the scoreboard. Opposing players then take turns throwing three darts, with each score being deducted from the total until zero is reached. The exact score is required to win each game and it's also necessary to complete each leg by finishing with a double number. Dartboards are circular and numbered from 1 to 20 in segments, with each of these numbers having both a double and a treble area. The centre of the board known as the bullseye has two segments, scoring either 25 or 50. The highest score possible with three darts is therefore 180, requiring each dart to score in the treble 20.

The German word 'dreizehn' relates to number 13.

There are 88 keys covering 8 octaves on a modern standard piano keyboard, with 52 white keys and 36 black keys.

So the correct answer is 180 + 13 + 88 = 281

10. While patiently waiting for my eggs to hatch, I hatched this little puzzle. What do you get if you add together the number of minutes in an hour, the number of hours in a day, the number of days in a leap year and the number of years in half a century? (And no, the answer isn't "a headache".)

Answer: 500

There are 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, 366 days in a leap year and a century is 100 years, so there are 50 years in half a century.
60 + 24+ 366 + 50 = 500

There are 60 minutes in an hour thanks to the Babylonians. They made astronomical calculations in base 60 because of the system they inherited from the Sumerians. The beauty of 60 is that it is divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Various people have experimented with decimal time over the years (100 minutes in an hour) but the system has never had widespread acceptance.

The 24 hour day comes from the ancient Egyptians, who liked to count in base 12. It's thought that this is because they counted by touching each finger joint with their thumb - three joints on each finger makes 12.

A normal year has 365 days, as this is approximately the length of time it takes for the Earth to complete one rotation around the sun. The actual length of time it takes is 365.2425 days, and so every 4 years we add an extra day to make up for the missed quarter days. By doing this we add on an extra 0.3 of a day every leap year, so we then need to even things out the other way! This is achieved by making every year that is a multiple of 100 a leap year only if it can be divided exactly by 400. Put more simply, the years 2000 and 2400 are leap years, while 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 are normal years.

A 50-year anniversary is called a semicentennial or a quinquagenary as well as being known as a golden jubilee.
