Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which author is responsible for such classic novels as 'Stuart Little' and 'Charlotte's Web'?

Answer: E. B. White

Elwyn Brooks White was born in 1899 in New York, and started his career writing articles for 'The New Yorker' magazine. 'Stuart Little', a story of a mouse who gets adopted by a human family, was White's first children's novel, and was published in 1945. His second novel was 'Charlotte's Web' in 1952.
2. Rock band Europe had a number one hit in the UK with 'The Final Countdown'. Who was their long haired lead singer?

Answer: Joey Tempest

The song was the band's first UK single release, and was also the only one of their singles to make the Top Ten in the UK. It was released in late 1986 and spent almost four months on the charts.
3. Which branch of science deals with the study of insects?

Answer: Entomology

Insects represent a vast percentage of all living organisms, and as such, the field of entomology is one that has existed for many, many years. Within entomology, the study of some specific organisms has attracted names of their own; for instance, lepidopterology is the study of butterflies and moths, and coleopterology is the study of beetles.
4. Edmonton is the capital city of which Canadian province?

Answer: Alberta

Although it is the capital of its province, Edmonton is the second-largest city within Alberta. The largest is Calgary, known for hosting the Winter Olympics in 1988. The National Institute for Nanotechnology makes its home in Edmonton, as does the iconic Fort Edmonton Park, a 'living history' museum in which visitors can experience life in a range of era thanks to original buildings and vehicles, and re-enactments, among other things.
5. The euphonium is a musical instrument found in which section of an orchestra?

Answer: Brass

Resembling a smaller tuba, the euphonium can be traced back to the serpent, a snake-like wind instrument invented around the late-fifteenth, early-sixteenth century. Though not as common in usage as its cousin, the tuba, the euphonium can be found in marching parades and brass bands.
6. Which first name links a British born American actress who passed away in 2011, a Canadian cosmetics business woman born Florence Nightingale Graham, and a British monarch who ascended the throne in 1952?

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth Taylor was best known for her roles in the films 'National Velvet', 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' and 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?', the latter of which won her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1967, and was in fact her second Best Actress win. Elizabeth Arden, who assumed that name for her business, was responsible for building one of the biggest cosmetics companies in America during the early twentieth century, and which still successfully operates today. Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom began her reign in February 1952, succeeding King George VI, and was crowned the next year in June.

In 2012, she celebrated her Diamond Jubilee.
7. Monotremes are egg-laying mammals, and there are only two types of monotreme in the world. One is the platypus. What is the other?

Answer: Echidna

Echidnas, along with the platypus, are native to Australasia. While there is only one species of platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus, there are four species of echidna. Three of these four species are predominantly found in Papua New Guinea, and are in fact hunted for food, and thus aren't encountered very often in the wild.

The fourth species, the short-beaked echidna, is mostly found in Australia, and thankfully is not under as much threat as its cousins in New Guinea.
8. Which inventor is best known for his invention of the electric light bulb and the motion picture camera?

Answer: Thomas Edison

The holder of over one thousand US patents, Thomas Alva Edison, born in 1847 and died in 1931, is frequently regarded as one of the most influential and prolific inventors in history. While Edison was not the first to create the light bulb, he was responsible for the long-lasting filament, which was, at the time, a breakthrough in the production of light bulbs. Previously, filaments were made from such substances as platinum and bamboo. Edison was the founder of General Electric, one of the largest conglomerate companies in America.
9. Which of these countries is located the farthest north?

Answer: Estonia

Estonia is one of the Baltic countries of Europe, sharing a land border with Latvia and Russia. Once part of the Soviet Union, it gained independence from Russia in 1991. Estonia has one of the strongest economies in Europe, and is well regarded for its economic freedom. Part of Tallinn, the country's capital city, is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
10. In physics, what is energy measured in?

Answer: Joules

The joule is a derived SI unit, with one joule equal to one kilogram-metre-squared-per-second-squared, or kg⋅m2/s2, in SI units. If a force is applied through a distance, the resultant energy used, or work done, is expressed in joules. Similarly, a one ampere current passing through a one ohm resistor for one second will produce one watt-second, or one joule.

The unit is named after James Prescott Joule, who, among other things, created the first law of thermodynamics.
