Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the best-known coincidences involves a man named Joseph Figlock who was walking down a street in Detroit when a baby fell from a high window and landed on top of him. A year later, another event occurred involving Joseph Figlock and a baby. What was it?

Answer: A baby fell from a window again and was again caught by Figlock

Luckily, both Figlock and the baby survived on both occasions.
2. On March 6 2002, two 71 year-old twin brothers were killed in bicycle accidents on the same stretch of road, just two hours apart. In which country did this coincidence take place?

Answer: Finland

One of the brothers was hit by a truck and killed while riding his bicycle on the west coast of Finland. Before the police had time to inform his family members, his twin brother was killed in an identical accident just half a mile down the same road.
3. According to an article on coincidences in the New York Herald on November 26, 1911, three men were hanged in London for the murder of a well-known British magistrate at Greenberry Hill. Their names were Robert Green, Henry Berry and Lawrence Hill. What was the name of the man they killed?

Answer: Sir Edmund Berry

The body of Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey was found on October 17, 1678 in a ditch at the bottom of Greenberry Hill (known as Primrose Hill at the time of the murder). Green, Berry and Hill were implicated by a confession made by Miles Prance. Although all three men claimed they were innocent, they were sentenced to be executed the following year.
This story formed part of the 1999 movie "Magnolia", starring Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore.
4. During 1944, the London Daily Telegraph crossword puzzle included clues leading to the words Omaha, Utah, Mulberry, Neptune, and Overlord. What was significant about these words?

Answer: They were code words relating to various aspects of Allied military operations

'Overlord' was the Allies' codename for the invasion of Normandy now known as D-Day. 'Omaha' and 'Utah' were names given to two of the beaches on which Allied troops would be landing. 'Neptune' was the code for the naval part of the operation, and 'Mulberry' was the artifical harbour which would be put in place after the landing.
Investigations by MI5 revealed that the puzzle was compiled by a schoolteacher called Leonard Sidney Dawe, who was innocent of espionage and had chosen the words at random.
5. There were many similarities between the two American presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F Kennedy. Which of these statements is NOT true?

Answer: Both presidents were shot on a Monday

The two presidents were both shot on Friday, not Monday.
Other connections between Lincoln and Kennedy include: they each have 7 letters in their surname; Lincoln had sons named Robert and Edward, whereas Kennedy had brothers named Robert and Edward; Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846 and Kennedy in 1946.
6. In 1884, a yacht named 'Mignonette' sank in the South Atlantic on its way to Australia. After surviving for 19 days in a dinghy, the captain and his two mates killed the cabin boy, Richard Parker, and ate him. Approximately fifty years earlier, in 1837, a novel called "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym' had been published. It told the story of a group of shipwrecked sailors who killed and ate the cabin boy in order to survive. The boy's name was Richard Parker. Who wrote this novel, published half a century before the sinking of the 'Mignonette'?

Answer: Edgar Allan Poe

After learning of this coincidence, the author Yann Martel chose the name Richard Parker for the shipwrecked tiger in his award-winning book, "The Life of Pi".
7. On October 25 1988, a soccer game took place in the Congo between the two teams Bena Tshadi and Basangana. What incredibly unfortunate thing happened during the match?

Answer: A single bolt of lightning killed the entire Bena Tshadi team

All 11 Bena Tshadi players were struck by lightning and killed, leaving the opposition side untouched. At first witchcraft was blamed, but a more rational theory is that the two sides were wearing a different type of metal stud on their football boots.
8. The famous pyschologist, Carl Jung, experienced a strange coincidence during an analysis session with a patient. The patient was describing to Jung a dream she'd had about an Egyptian scarab beetle. What happened next?

Answer: A scarab beetle flew through the window

As they were discussing the dream, there was a tap at the window. Jung opened it and in flew a scarab beetle. Jung referred to this type of coincidence as 'synchronicity'.
9. Another coincidence, documented by the scientist Paul Kammerer, tells of two men admitted to the same hospital during World War II. Which of these statements is not true?

Answer: They were both suffering from measles

Both men were admitted to the military hospital of Katowize with pneumonia. Another coincidence is that they were both born in Silesia.
10. One day in 1883, Henry Ziegland of Honey Grove, Texas, walked out on his girlfriend. In order to gain revenge, her brother tried to shoot Ziegland, but the bullet missed and buried itself in a tree. The brother then took his own life using the same weapon. Years later, in 1913, Ziegland decided to pull down the tree using dynamite. What happened next?

Answer: The bullet became dislodged, and embedded itself in Ziegland's head, killing him at last

This incident is recorded in the 'Guinness Book of World Records' as the longest duration for a murder to be committed.
