Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What three letter real life company has been said to have been the inspiration for the computer named HAL on "2001: A Space Odyssey" (this has been declared an urban myth by many)?

Answer: IBM

The HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer) 9000 computer is an artificial intelligence and the onboard computer on the spaceship Discovery One in the 1968 movie "2001: A Space Odyssey".
If you change each of the letters in HAL by increasing one letter up in the alphabet you get IBM. Both Arthur C. Clarke (writer of the book) and Stanley Kubrick (director of the movie) deny any of this, although IBM did consult during the making of the movie.
2. What is a point or region in space-time where there is infinite density and zero volume where the laws of physics break down? (There may only be one)

Answer: Gravitational singularity

Some physicists believe that our universe was created from such a point (Big Bang Theory).
Singularities were first predicated as a result of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, which resulted in the theoretical existence of black holes. A curvature singularity is best exemplified by a black hole. At the center of a black hole, space-time becomes a one-dimensional point which contains a huge mass. As a result, gravity become infinite and space-time curves infinitely, and the laws of physics as we know them cease to function.
3. What company was the official manufacturer of NBA basketballs, then wasn't for over 30 years, then took over again?

Answer: Wilson

Since the NBA was founded in 1946, the league only changed its ball four times. The official ball for the league's first 37 seasons was manufactured by Chicago-based Wilson. Spalding took over from 1983-2021.
At the start of the 2021-22 season (the league's 75th anniversary), Wilson took over once again from Spalding as the league's official ball manufacturer.
4. Bitterballen is a food from which country?

Answer: The Netherlands

Bitterballen (plural of Bitterbal) is a typical Dutch snack food found in bars and small cafes. They are a smaller, round version of the popular Kroketten (croquettes) and are filled with a minced beef or veal ragout and deep fried. Other versions are filled with either cheese or shrimp.
5. What are those spots on a die called?

Answer: pips

A common die (plural dice) is a cube shape, and the sum of the opposite faces add up to seven. The dots on each side are known as pips and are arranged in a specific pattern. The dots on dominoes are also known as pips and arranged in the same pattern.
6. What is the travel restriction for a Geocaching Travel Bug?

Answer: It has the ability to travel all over the world, unrestricted

A Travel Bug (TB) is used to describe a type of dog tag that wanders from cache to cache. It may be attached to an object (known as a hitchhiker) which travels with the TB. Each TB has its own page which tracks its journey and calculates the number of miles travelled.

Although there are no official records for the most travelled bug, some have moved nearly one million miles and are still wandering around the globe! One TB is even on the International Space Station, although for the average cacher, this may be impossible to retrieve!
7. Which country has the largest shipping ports in the world?

Answer: China

China has over 70% of the world's largest/busiest seaports, the Port of Shanghai being the largest. It took over from Singapore in 2010. It is situated at the mouth of the Yangtze River and is perfect for international and domestic trade.
Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, is Europe's largest seaport.
8. How often do the Olympic games take place? (Think carefully!)

Answer: every 2 years

Although four years pass between each edition of both the summer and winter versions of the Olympics, since 1994 (the Lillehammer winter games) the summer and winter games have been staggered. Before this both versions were celebrated in the same calendar year. Thus:

1992 Summer Barcelona, Winter Albertville
1994 Winter Lillehammer
1996 Summer Atlanta
1998 Winter Nagano
2000 Summer Sydney
2002 Winter Salt Lake City
2004 Summer Athens
2006 Winter Turin
2008 Summer Beijing
2010 Winter Vancouver
2012 Summer London
204 Winter Sochi
2016 Summer Rio de Janeiro
2018 Winter Pyeongchang
The 2020 Summer Olympics were supposed to be held in Tokyo, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the games were delayed until 2021.
2022 Winter Beijing as scheduled.
9. Which Dutch artist was responsible for painting "The Night Watch"?

Answer: Rembrandt van Rijn

Arguably, the most famous painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam "Militia Company of District II Under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq" or its alternative title of "The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch" is more commonly known as "The Night Watch". It was completed in 1642 by Rembrandt van Rijn and is a large painting by any standards, measuring 363 cm × 437 cm (11.91 ft. × 14.34 ft.).
The painting has been vandalized over the years but has been fully restored.
10. The Traveling Wilburys were an English American group consisting of Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and what former member of the Beatles?

Answer: George Harrison

The Traveling Wilburys were formed in 1988 from discussions between George Harrison and Jeff Lynne. George wanted to make an album with some of his friends and this supergroup of musicians was the result.
The group's final release was in February 1991 and "The Traveling Wilburys Collection" box set was released in June 2007.
