Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Greek Mythology, there is a story of a nymph who fell in love with a man named Narcissus. However, because of a spell that was cast upon her, she could never tell him. What was her name?

Answer: Echo

Narcissus was a handsome fellow, according to folklore, but was also a bit narcissistic. (Do you see a connection?) The only person he loved was himself and he was so spellbound by his own reflection in a stream that he stared at it until he perished from hunger and thirst.

A nymph named Echo had been the target of Pan, the Greek God of Nature. He had loved her but that love was unrequited. To punish her, he cast a spell on her where she could only repeat what others said. Every time Narcissus would say to his reflection, "I love you"; she would then repeat it. Echo faded away shortly after Narcissus perished.

She can still be heard in the hills today, echoing voices. (There are other versions of this story as well, but this is the one that I learned from mythology).
2. What is the name of the aircraft carrier that was used by America during World War II and was not officially retired until 1982, which can be seen at the Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City?

Answer: Intrepid

The U.S.S. Intrepid was launched on April 26, 1943 and sailed for Pearl Harbor via the Panama Canal. It was involved in the Marshall Islands invasion, a raid on Truk, the battle of Leyte Gulf, as well as strikes against the Philippines, Formosa, and Okinawa.

After the war, it sat in reserve in San Francisco until 1962, when it served as a recovery ship for the Gemini III space capsule. It also served in the Vietnam War in three combat cruises. It can now be visited at the Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City. I saw it as a young child with my father in the early 80's while Martin Sheen was filming a commercial there.
3. Which of the following gases are odorless, tasteless, colorless, nontoxic, chemically inert, and used in plasma displays?

Answer: Neon

Neon or "Ne", as you would find it on the periodic table of elements, is mainly used in its gaseous form for light bulbs and neon signs. Most stores use neon signs to increase visibility and to attract customers at night. Neon has several other uses but this is what it is most notable for.
4. What is the name of an object, which can separate white light into the whole spectrum of colors that makes up light?

Answer: Prism

White is not actually even considered a color. It is the combination of all colors, which is the opposite of black, which is the absence of color. By deflecting white light through a prism, you will see the colors in the order of a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Rainbows in the sky are created from refracted prisms caused by water droplets in the atmosphere.
5. Which of the following words best fits this description: "Something that serves as a preceding event or introduces what follows". It is inclusive of the other three answers.

Answer: Prelude

A prologue is the explanatory part of a story or screenplay just preceding the story proper. A foreword is a short introductory essay preceding the text of a book that can be written by the author or a different author as an endorsement. A preface is something spoken as introductory to a discourse, or written as introductory to a book or essay.

A prelude encompasses the other three answers and is not usually found at the beginning of a book.
6. This is the team name of the NBA franchise in Cleveland or a member of the sports team at the University of Virginia.

Answer: Cavalier

The NBA franchise in Cleveland is called the "Cleveland Cavaliers" and the University of Virginia sports the "Virginia Cavaliers".
7. Tornadoes, hurricanes, monsoons, and blizzards are all types of weather. What word best symbolizes these kinds of weather patterns? (Hint: The Tampa Bay arena league franchise uses this for its nickname).

Answer: Storms

All of the above fall into the category of storms that are considered to be "severe weather." Other types of these storms include waterspouts, thunder and lightning storms, and hailstorms. Tornadoes are also known as twisters or cyclones and hurricanes are also known as typhoons.
8. This is the second sign of the zodiac. Of the 12 houses on an astrological chart, it signifies possessions.

Answer: Taurus

Taurus is the second sign of the twelve zodiac signs. If your sun sign is in Taurus, then your birthday falls between April 20th and May 20th. It's ruling planet is Venus and is one of the three Earth signs. Some character traits include: responsibility, lavish tastes, stubbornness, and self-indulgence. "Ferdinand the Bull" characterizes Tauruses.
9. A person who receives support and protection from an influential person that will help to advance that person's career can be defined by which of the following?

Answer: Protege

Nepotism is where the chain of command is handed down through heritage, such as a CEO giving his company to his son or daughter. I made up the word "Nepotite", however. A "Sugar Daddy" is a slang term for a man that financially takes care of a younger female in exchange for some type of sexual satisfaction.

However, "Sugar Baby", as far as I know, is only a type of candy. The above definition fits a "protégé" more so than it does an "assistant".
10. Ok... now, what do answers 1-9 have in common? They are all types of something!

Answer: Cars

All of the following are type of cars! There is the Toyota ECHO, the Dodge INTREPID, the Dodge or Plymouth NEON, the Chevy Geo PRISM, the Honda PRELUDE, the Chevrolet CAVALIER, the Chevy Geo STORM, the Ford TAURUS, and the Mazda PROTÉGÉ. I hope you enjoyed the quiz!
