Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the human body bones are rigid organs that make up the body system known as the what? (Again - consider the human body.)

Answer: Endoskeleton

Human beings - as most warm blooded animals - have an endoskeleton which means the bones (and cartilage) develop deep under the skin and/or within the body tissue. Bones give the body its shape, provide support and protection and are essential for locomotion. Also, bones produce red and white blood cells and store minerals.
2. Which Algerian city, a popular tourist site and important port of the Mediterranean Sea with a very rich and varied history, was formerly called Bône?

Answer: Annaba

Annaba, with its ideal location and fertile climate, has been the conquest of many nations. It was during the French rule which began in 1832 that Annaba was called Bône. After the conclusion of the Algerian War of Independence in 1962, Bône became Annaba.
3. If you overhear someone - particularly a native of the East End of London (England) - say, "Quiet! I'm on the dog and bone," what is that person (most likely) doing?

Answer: Talking on the telephone

Ah, those English with their use of Cockney rhyming slang! Considering the rhyme, it is easy to imagine how "I'm on the phone" became "I'm on the dog and bone". Like many of the phrases, this rhyme can be shortened by dropping part of the phrase. Then instead of "dog and bone" for phone, just "dog" may be used.
4. Which musical instrument - a member of the brass family of instruments - has the slang name of "bone"?

Answer: Trombone

The trombone is distinctive among musical instruments due to its slide - a telescoping mechanism that changes the length of the air column, thus changing the pitch of the instrument as it is being played. Not all trombones have the slide but most of them do. Other nicknames, besides bone, for the trombone include: T'bone, sackbut and slush pump.
5. If you were browsing through your local antique mall and saw an item marked as "Bone China", what would that indicate?

Answer: Item is made of a type of porcelain consisting partially of bone ash

To be marked as "Bone China", a piece of porcelain must contain at least 25% bone ash. Traditionally, though, the bone ash content of the finest porcelain (china) is significantly higher - up to 50% bone ash. The mixture of bone ash, kaolin and (china) stone makes a lightweight and luxurious yet dependably sturdy product. Most of the bone ash used in the porcelain production of bone china is from cattle bones, thus it is a product many vegans and vegetarians will avoid using.
6. Many box games, board games and games of luck or chance incorporate a game piece or pieces that carry the nickname "bones". What are these game pieces?

Answer: Dice

Excavations have unearthed dice that are known to date before recorded history. Certainly, games that include dice are mentioned within the very earliest records of human interaction. Very early forms of dice were made of bone material. Specifically, the knucklebone (often of hoofed animals) was a natural choice due to its cube shape. Through the centuries dice became more likely to be made of ivory, wood or plastic, yet the nickname "bones" still remained.
7. One collective set of gaming tiles can be called bones, cards or stones. Each piece is rectangular with a line in its center that divides it into two equal squares. Each square may be blank or marked with a number of spots (also called pips, dobs or nips). What game is this?

Answer: Dominoes

According to information found in Wikipedia.com, dominoes - the game pieces - may be made of a variety of materials. Besides bone or ivory, the game pieces may be made of stone (such as marble, granite or soapstone), wood (such as ash, oak, or cedar), brass, pewter, clay, glass or crystal. Dominoes are even made of the dark hardwood ebony with a reverse color scheme - the pips are white against the darker background.
8. When you hear - or say - the phrase "and, I make no bones about it", what is that implying?

Answer: Speaker is being concise and truthful

When the phrase "make no bones about it" is attached to another phrase it generally implies the speaker is being clear and direct with their statement, thus their opinion. Most often it also implies the speaker has little regard or concern about the statement's effect or its acceptance.

More than likely the source of this phrase comes from (as early as the 16th century) a time when soup was a daily staple but could be dangerous if all the bones had not been removed from it. Thus, if the soup had "no bones" it could be consumed with confidence - much as a true and concise statement may be.
9. If you encounter someone you have not seen for a while and that person says, "Oh, I have a bone to pick with you", what would be implied?

Answer: He/she is upset about something and wants to discuss it with you

Generally, when someone says, "I have a bone to pick with you", that person is upset about something you have done or that person believes you have done. It is a phrase from centuries ago when bones would be picked clean - by both humans and companion animals, such as dogs - to get every last morsel of nourishment. "Picking the bone" then became synonymous with "coming clean".
10. An action film starring Matt Damon based on novel written by Robert Ludlum is about a very skillful and talented man with severe memory loss. He quickly realizes there is more to his memory loss than just remembering who he is. What is this movie's title?

Answer: The Bourne Identity

"The Bourne Identity" (2002) does star Matt Damon - and Franka Potente, Chris Cooper and Clive Owen. The film was instantly popular with the public and movie critics. The action film/spy-thriller has been the source of three more Bourne movies: "The Bourne Supremacy" (2004), "The Bourne Ultimatum" (2007), and "The Bourne Legacy" (2012).
