Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How do you write 300 in Roman numerals?

Answer: CCC

XXX is 30. VVV and DDD are not valid Roman numerals.
2. In which sport is a score of 300 regarded as 'perfect'?

Answer: Bowling

It is achieved by rolling strikes in ten successive frames of a single game and then two more after that. Ten strikes in a row only gives a total of 270 points, and a player who throws that gets two extra chances for strikes to reach 300.
So, to get 300, you need to throw 12 successive strikes.
3. In the book of Judges in the Hebrew Bible, which judge deployed 300 soldiers in battle against the Midianites?

Answer: Gideon

After the tribes of Israel returned to the Promised land, things still remained difficult for them and they were driven from their villages by the invading Midianites. One day an angel appeared to Gideon while he was threshing wheat and told him the Lord was with him and he was to go out and slay the Midianites.

He gathered an army of thousands of soldiers, but the Lord told him he did not need that many. He chose those he needed by watching how they drank water from a stream. Those who lapped with one hand and kept their weapons ready in the other were selected, 300 in all.

He set the 300 to surround the Midianite army and in the middle of the night they made a huge noise. Convinced they were surrounded, the Midianites fled. Most were destroyed by other soldiers of Gideon's army, but those who evaded them were pursued and killed by the 300.
4. In 1953, a Scottish science fiction author published a story "One In Three Hundred" in three novellas. To what did the number refer?

Answer: Number of people to escape a disaster on earth

"One In Three Hundred" was published in "The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction" and later as a book. It created a scenario in which scientists knew that Earth was to be destroyed when the sun grew hot enough to boil away all the seas. The time of this was precisely predicted and work began to build spaceships to take people to a new life on Mars.

The trouble was there would only be room for one in three hundred of the population of the USA. The narrator had the 'tickets' for survival and would choose who would get them. J.T. McIntosh was a pseudonym used by James Murdoch MacGregor (1925 - 2008.)
5. In the New Testament Book of John, what was it Mary of Bethany used that was worth 300 dinarii?

Answer: Perfume

Six days before the Passover, Jesus visited the home village of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. Mary served dinner and then took a pound of costly perfume made of nard, anointed Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair.
Various Bible translations agree that Judas Iscariot said: "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" Jesus replied: "You will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me". [From the New Standard Revised Version.]

Note: of the four Gospel writers, only John mentions Mary, sister of Martha, by name in this incident.
6. I am baking a cake for my favourite FunTrivia editor. The recipe says to set the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit; what is that in Celsius, to the nearest natural number?

Answer: 149

It is actually 148.889 and most recipes will give it as 150. The Fahrenheit scale is based on one that came from the work of Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in the 1720s. By 1960, Fahrenheit was used worldwide, but began to lose favour to the Celsius scale. By the end of the 20th century, the USA was the largest country to use Fahrenheit as its official temperature scale. (As did some smaller countries in Central America and the Caribbean.)
Celsius became used elsewhere, but it was not uncommon to hear weather forecasters give the temperature in both scales.
7. The '300 Club' is an exclusive group of people who have experienced a 300 degrees Fahrenheit change in temperatures within a short time. Where, traditionally, do people go to qualify?

Answer: South Pole

To qualify you need to go to Antarctica and wait for a day when the temperature drops to −100°F (-73°C). First you climb into a nice sauna heated to 200°F (93°C) then run naked in the snow around the South Pole before climbing back into the sauna. Alternatively, you could say "yes" when your true love asks "does my behind look big in this", and wait for the temperature to drop by 300 degrees...
8. The movie "300" was an epic production made in 2006. Of which true historical battle was it a retelling?

Answer: Battle of Thermopylae

In 480BC, King Leonidas of Sparta led an alliance of Greek city-states in battle against the Persian Empire of Xerxes I. The Greek forces were heavily outnumbered. They held off the superior forces for a week to block a mountain pass at Thermopylae. They were betrayed, though, and the Persians outflanked them. Leonidas pulled the bulk of his army back, leaving a small force to cover their withdrawal. Among that small force of about 2,000 were 300 Spartans. The heroism of those 300 was, centuries later, to ignite the interest of movie-makers.

As well as the 2006 movie "300", the battle was retold in the 1962 film "The 300 Spartans". The movie "300" was an adaptation of a comic book of the same title. The live action and dialogue were filmed against a blue screen, on which background images from the comic book were displayed.

The movie starred Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Dominic West, Vincent Regan, and Michael Fassbender. A sequel, "300: Rise of an Empire", was released in 2014.
9. Membership of the '300 Home Run Club' is much sought after in baseball. Its members are those who have hit 300 home runs. Who was the first?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth reached the mark on September 8th, 1925. By the time his career ended, he had hit 714 home runs. It was to be almost 40 years before anyone surpassed that tally.

(Of course many quiz players who know nothing about baseball will have got this right by clicking on the most famous baseball name they have heard of. Perhaps I should have mixed things up with Joe DiMaggio...)
10. If you were the helmsman on the good ship FunTrivia and the captain told you to steer a course of 300 degrees, in which general direction would you be heading?

Answer: Northwest by North

Northwest by North is actually a media of 326.25 degrees, but don't worry, there are plenty of people around to say you are wrong and correct you. They are called editors. (Insert smiley face here.)
