Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these honorary orders is the only one that can be awarded by at least two different countries?

Answer: Golden Fleece

Legion d'Honneur can only be awarded by France. President of France is the grandmaster. The order was created in 1802 by Napoleon. The Thistle is the national emblem of Scotland and the Order of the Thistle, is her highest award. The Order of the Chrysanthemum is a very select award at the Japanese court.

After all the chrysanthemum is the floral emblem of the imperial family itself. The Golden Fleece was created by Philip the Good of Burgundy in Pre-Columbian times. It can be conferred as well by Austria as by Spain, who both inherit of the Hapsburgian tradition. What entitles you to those honours is not easy to define. For George Washington's Purple Hearts you at least had to have received wounds 'in action'.
2. Of which honorary order is 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' ('Shame to him who thinks evil of it') the motto?

Answer: Order of the Garter

There is a story about Joan of Kent, the Countess of Salisbury, dropping her blue garter and English King Edward III picking it up and putting it on his own leg. The snickerers were further silenced with the comment: And don't you dare to be critical of this.
