Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Saturday-morning cartoon series "Wacky Races," who was the evil antagonist, assisted by his mechanic dog Muttley?

Answer: Dick Dastardly

Hanna-Barbera produced "Wacky Races" 1968-1969. The cartoon series about a cross-country automobile race was inspired by the motion picture "The Great Race" (1965). The show featured Penelope Pitstop, Professor Pat Pending, the Red Max, Sergeant Blast and Private Meekly, the Ant Hill Mob, and Peter Perfect. Penelope's arch enemy was Dick Dastardly and his smirking dog Muttley. Several spin-offs resulted, taking Penelope and/or Dick Dastardly with them.

The original series was remade in 2017-2018 but not renewed.
2. Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote a children's book called "Wacky Wednesday" in 1974. Why did he publish it using the pseudonym "Theo. LeSieg" rather than "Dr. Seuss"?

Answer: because another person illustrated it

Theodor Seuss Geisel used the pen name "Dr. Seuss" on all of the books which he both wrote and illustrated. "Wacky Wednesday" was illustrated by George Booth. Geisel used the pseudonym "Theo. LeSieg" on all of the books (over a dozen) which he wrote but did not illustrate. "LeSieg" is "Geisel" spelled backwards.
3. Which Canadian politician and former premier of British Columbia was nicknamed "Wacky"?

Answer: W. A. C. Bennett

William Andrew Cecil Bennett (1900-1979) served as the 25th premier of British Columbia from 1952 to 1972. His tenure of twenty years is a landmark in British Columbia political history. Because of his initials, he was sometimes referred to as "Wacky" Bennett; his good friends called him "Cece."
4. If one purchases a box of Wacky MacŪ at the grocer's, of what delight is one about to partake?

Answer: macaroni and cheese

A number of food manufacturers have enjoyed success by packaging dry pasta and an envelope of cheese sauce mix with which to make macaroni and cheese. The variety often comes from the interesting shape of the pasta, e.g. rabbits or space men. The boxed dinner Wacky MacŪ Macaroni & Cheese, produced by Treehouse Foods, includes four shapes of pasta: wheels, shells, spirals, and tubes.
5. In proper Modern English, is the preferred term "wacky" or "whacky" or what?

Answer: the two words are equally correct

"Wacky" or "whacky" means crazy, eccentric, absurd, irrational, weird, nutty, silly, or goofy. "Whacky" is possibly the elder of the two forms; "wacky" is the more currently popular. The two terms have identical meanings. While there is no definitive etymology, there is reason to believe that the term derived from the 19th century slang verb "to whack" in the sense that a whacky person was one who had been whacked too many times in the head.
6. Country-Western singer Toby Keith recorded a song titled "Wacky Tobaccy" in 2017. What was it about?

Answer: marijuana

Toby Keith sang, "That old wacky tobaccy / When you feel it creeping up on you / That old wacky tobaccy / Kick back and let it do what it do." The song appeared on his album "The Bus Songs" in 2017. Keith both wrote and performed "Wacky Tobaccy," in part as an homage to Willie Nelson.
7. Charles Edison, the composer and lyricist of "Wicky Wacky Woo" and "Don't Ask Nothing of Me," was the son of what famous inventor?

Answer: Thomas Alva Edison

Charles Edison (1890-1969) had an interesting and varied career. He was the governor of New Jersey. He was the Assistant Secretary of the United States Navy. He was a composer, spurred by his father's invention and development of the phonograph.
8. Singer-songwriter Carole King, along with Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian, wrote the song "Wacky World" in 1996. What is it about?

Answer: mental illness in public

The song "Wacky World" is sad. The first verse describes a barefoot man singing on a street corner for change. The man in mentally challenged but happy. The second verse describes a woman who is naked in a laundromat. She, too, is mentally challenged but happy. The song concludes that they are both living in "Wacky World" and that "when the pressure gets to me / Wacky World is where I want to be."
9. In the 1960 motion picture, what sort of vessel was "The Wackiest Ship in the Army"?

Answer: a wooden, twin-masted schooner

Both the movie and the television series which followed it in 1965-1966 were based on an actual sailing schooner lent by the government of New Zealand to the United States during the Second World War. The actual ship was the USS Echo. The film starred Jack Lemmon and Ricky Nelson. The TV series starred Jack Warden and Gary Collins.
10. A March 1998 guest column in "The Augusta Chronicle" published Anita Marina's poem "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book & read to a child." Which author's style was she attempting to duplicate?

Answer: Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel)

This quotation is often attributed to Dr. Seuss, probably because Ms. Marina did such an excellent job of mimicking Theodor Geisel's style. This misattribution is stylistically understandable. Dr. Seuss, however, died in 1991, years before it was published.
