From 1884 to early 2000, the Ecuadorian currency was the Sucre. The coin received this name in honor of the Latin-American revolutionary Antonio Jose de Sucre Alcala. On March 9, 2000, the Ecuadorian President Gustavo Noboa with congressional approval passed a law replacing the Sucre by the US Dollar.

In March 13, 2000 the dollar became the official currency of Ecuador and the use of Sucre banknotes was no longer legal by September, 2000.

The Galapagos Islands are about 1,000 km from the Ecuadorian coast. They were formed by underwater volcanic eruptions and are distributed on either side of the Equator Line in the Pacific Ocean. Since 1873 the Galapagos Islands constitute one of the provinces of Ecuador. The capital of the archipelago is Porto Barranquizo Moreno on San Cristobal Island.
