From 1884 to early 2000, the Ecuadorian currency was the Sucre. The coin received this name in honor of the Latin-American revolutionary Antonio Jose de Sucre Alcala. The Galapagos Islands are about 1,000 km from the Ecuadorian coast. They were formed by underwater volcanic eruptions and are distributed on either side of the Equator Line in the Pacific Ocean. Since 1873 the Galapagos Islands constitute one of the provinces of Ecuador. The capital of the archipelago is Porto Barranquizo Moreno on San Cristobal Island.
