Taraba State is a state located in the north-east of Nigeria near the border with Cameroon. It is named for the river that flows in the south of the state, the Taraba River. In 1991 the Taraba State was created out of the former Gongola State of Nigeria. The capital city of Taraba State is Jalingo.

"Nigeria, We Hail Thee" was the national anthem of Nigeria from independence in 1960 until 1978. It was written by a British expatriate, Jean Williams, who resided in Nigeria during the country's independence. The song's music was composed by Frances Berda.

"Arise, O Compatriots" is Nigeria's second national anthem since independence, replacing "Nigeria, We Hail Thee" in 1978. The lyrics were attained from a combination of phrases and words extracted from the five best entries, in a national contest that was held while Nigeria was suffering the dictatorship of Benedict E. Odiase (1934 - 2013).
