Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The item first upon your list, Is a special food, Anzac biscuits you will need, They'll put you in the mood! You'd better get a'cookin' now, And make a batch for me: They're easy things for baking, So choose the recipe!

Answer: Ingredients include rolled oats, flour and golden syrup

Anzac Biscuits (originally called "Soldiers' Biscuits") were made especially to send to soldiers fighting overseas. The ingredients were chosen because they didn't readily spoil. One version of the recipe calls for the following:

1 cup rolled oats, 3/4 cup coconut, 1 cup flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1 tablespoon golden syrup and 2 tbs boiling water.
2. You have to find a bunyip now, An item on your list, In which place will you look for it, Ensuring you won't miss?

Answer: A waterhole

The mythical bunyip was said to inhabit waterholes or billabongs. A good place to look is the outback, just past the black stump, out the back of Bourke.
3. I guess you like koalas? The fuzzy little dears, Where will you be looking? What will they be near? Famous as attractions, (You've seen them at the zoo), But where will you be hunting, To get a closer view?

Answer: Up a eucalyptus tree

Koalas spend almost all their time in eucalyptus trees. Eucalyptus leaves are their only food, and they need very little water. There are no wild ones in Tasmania, they won't eat plums and certainly wouldn't be found in a burrow.
4. An opal is a treasure, Beneath the earth, it's found, Why not look where dwellings, Are built right underground? So where's this special mining place, Unique; an outback town, Where opals aren't the only things You're finding underground.

Answer: Coober Pedy, South Australia

Coober Pedy is the home of opal mining and underground dwellings. Much of the town is built underground, which allows for temperature control in the houses. Lightning Ridge is the home of black boulder opal, but the houses out there are built above the ground. Tasmania's Beaconsfield is a gold mining centre and Ballarat is also associated with gold.
5. You need to find a kind of tree, They call the huon pine, Its yield is butter-coloured wood, In beautiful design, It makes a ship that's hard to sink, It's turned to gorgeous plates, But where is this tree growing With all its lofty mates?

Answer: Tasmania's south west

The beautiful huon pine is a native to Tasmania. It is highly prized for its wood, and was once used extensively in ship building because the oily timber resisted water and also repelled insect attack, especially from the infamous ship-enemy called the Teredo Worm.

It is now used mostly for craft work, and is largely protected. Huon pine trees are slow growing and can live more the two thousand years. There is a stand of trees in existence that dates back half a millennium.
6. You want to find a joey (aghhhh!) And take a snap, somehow, But where will you go looking? That's the puzzle now.

Answer: In all of these places

"Joey" is the name given to the young of many kinds of marsupial, including the koala, kangaroo, wallaby and quokka. A male kangaroo is called a buck or a boomer, a female is a doe or a flyer.
7. Where will you find a platypus? A funny looking mammal It looks as if committees made it, (Then, so does a camel) It has a soft bill like a duck, It suckles young, lays eggs; It spends much time in water Has spurs on its hind legs. You wonder where you'll find one And what my clues are worth? It's one of just two monotremes Still living on our Earth.

Answer: In the Mersey River in Tasmania

The platypus, one of only two living monotremes (the echidna is the other) lives in rivers and creeks in south eastern Australia. These include the Mersey River, Tasmania. It doesn't live in the sea, and can't live in the River Todd, which is usually dry.
8. "The Coathanger", (a nickname) The "Tasman", and the "Bowen", The "Richmond" is the oldest in Australia. I'm talking bridges all around, And one in Sydney will be found. Seeking others there will end in failure. So where will you be searching, To find the other three? Check the offered choices, And say where they will be.

Answer: All in Tasmania

The Tasman and Bowen Bridges both span the Derwent River in Tasmania. The Richmond Bridge spans the Coal River, also in Tasmania. Richmond Bridge is the oldest surviving bridge in Australia, and was built in 1823. Another famed Tasmanian bridge is the Ross Bridge, built in 1836 and wonderfully carved by stonemason Daniel Herbert, who had been transported for highway robbery.
9. You want to see a wild galah, In pink and grey so sweet, But where would you be looking for it? Where will you two meet?

Answer: Up a gum tree

The pretty pink and grey galah is a cheerful cockatoo with a small frill of crest. It is playful and excitable, and will definitely be found up a gum tree (or a wattle tree, or any other kind of tall tree).
10. Boronia is pretty, It gives a lot of pleasure, But where will you discover This valuable treasure?

Answer: Growing in the bush or in gardens

Boronia is a delightfully sweet-scented flowering shrub. It grows wild in some places, and the cultivated version is a popular favourite in gardens and pots. Boronia perfume is also popular.

So now you've made your treasure hunt
You know your way about,
Did you like my treasure hunt?
If so, give me a shout! Coooo-eeee!
