Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the two official languages of Paraguay?

Answer: Guarani and Spanish

Guarani is an indigenous tongue and pretty unique to Paraguay. Spanish is spoken in businesses and in formal settings, but Guarani is spoken in the homes of nearly everyone.
2. What is the Anglicised spelling of the Guarani word for water?

Answer: y

Mbaracaya is the word for cat, jagua means dog, sy means mother and, yes, y is the word for water. The famous Iguassu Falls on the Brazil-Argentina border actually means Big Water--y for water and guazu for big. The word "y" is pronounced like a grunt that is a little like what a weightlifter would say upon attempting a big lift. Its not a pretty sound.
3. Which of the following religious terms is *NOT* the name of a city in Paraguay?

Answer: Gracia

Asunción which means "Ascension" is, of course, the capital. Concepción which means "Conception" is a modestly large city north of Asunción along the Paraguay River. Encarnación which means "Incarnation" is an equally large city on the Parana River in southern Paraguay. Gracia, which means "Grace", is not a city in Paraguay.
4. Which of the following men was ousted as dictator of Paraguay in 1989 after 35 years in power?

Answer: Alfredo Stroessner

Rodriguez assumed power following Stroessner's demise but was maligned by most non-Paraguayans as being a drug trafficker. Roa Bastos was Paraguay's most celebrated author. Menem was the President of Argentina during that period and had plenty problems of his own. Stroessner was supported by the U.S. for many years but ultimately came under fire for his human rights record and was ousted by a group of his own military generals including Rodrigues.
5. Jose Luis Chilavert, one of Paraguay's most celebrated soccer players, played which position for the national team?

Answer: Goalkeeper

Chilavert, known for his fiery temper, was also considered to be one of the best taker of free kicks in the world and often scored goals. He was also considered to be one of the great goalkeepers in the world and for many years played for the Argentine team of Velez Sarsfeld.
6. With which nation did Paraguay fight the Chaco War(1928-1935)?

Answer: Bolivia

Paraguayans are quite proud of themselves for "winning" this war, and they claim that their bilingual ability proved to be the deciding factor. They could understand the Bolivians' Spanish, but the Bolivians had difficulty understanding their Guarani. Nevertheless, Paraguay's male population was devastated by the war.

This came after the destruction of the War of the Triple Alliance. To say the least, Paraguay had just a few good men remaining.
7. Which of the following statements is true of the Paraguayan flag?

Answer: The two sides are different.

One side has a wreath or garland surrounding a lone star while the other side has a lion figure. It is peculiar.
8. True or false? Iguassu Falls does not currently lie within Paraguay's borders.

Answer: True

At one time, the falls did lie within Paraguay's borders, but Paraguay lost the War of the Triple Alliance in 1870 and with it much of its territory as well as 90% of its male population. Currently, the falls lie on the Argentina/Brazil border with the Argentine side being in my opinion the more beautiful side.
9. What city in Paraguay is located the furthest south?

Answer: Pilar

Pilar is a very distant outpost on the Paraguay River south of Asuncion.
10. On which Paraguayan river are two of the largest dams in the world found?

Answer: Parana

The two dams are the Itaipu Dam located near Ciudad del Este and the Yacyreta Dam located West of Encarnacion. Both are enormous and provide power to both Argentina and Brazil as well as Paraguay.
