1. Europe, 1949-90. The country was formally independent 1955.

Answer: German Democratic Republic, DDR

German Democratic Republic, or DDR, was included in BRD 1990.
2. Europe 1878-1918. Here I want the names of two former states who were both independent monarchies during the period 1878-1918.

Answer: Serbia and Montenegro

Both Serbia and Montenegro became fully independent 1878, but also had a history of independence during medieval times. Serbia from 1170, Montenegro from 1379. Before that it was a principality dependent on Serbia. The reason why the other alternatives are wrong: Bosnia and Herzegovina is a present independent nation, as are Croatia and Slovenia. And Kosovo never was an independent nation, but now has a de facto semi-independent status.

By the way, Serbia and Montenegro joined with Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia to make The Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovens in 1918.

This later became Yugoslavia.
3. Europe, 1898-1913.

Answer: Crete

Crete was made a semi-independent state 1898. Annexed by Greece 1913.
4. Europe, 1924-1939.

Answer: Memel

Today called Klaipeda, the city of Memel is in Lithuania. It was part of autonomous Memel territory 1924-39.
5. Europe, 1920-24.

Answer: Fiume

Fiume is now in Croatia and is called Rijeka. It became an independent free city 1920, but was annexed to Italy 1924 and transferred to Yugoslavia 1947.
6. Europe, 1947-54

Answer: Trieste

Trieste, or in full Free Territory of Trieste, was a free territory under UN 1947-54. Divided between Italy and Yugoslavia 1954.
7. Asia, Caucasus 1917-1918.

Answer: Transcaucasian Federated Republic

This republic was established 1917, but was soon dissolved into seperate republics of Georgia, Azerbaiijan and Armenia. Reunited under USSR rule 1922-36.
8. Asia, Far East 1911-14 and 1921-44.

Answer: Tannu Tuva

This territory was independent 1911-14 and 1921-44, then part of USSR.
9. Asia, Far East 1920-22.

Answer: Far Eastern Republic

The Far Eastern Republic was formed 1920 of four republics of E Siberia with capital at Chita.
10. Asia, Caucasus, 1919-21.

Answer: Abkhazia

Abkhazia created an autonomus republic in 1919. Part of Georgian SSR 1921.
11. Asia, Middle East 1967-90.

Answer: South Yemen

South Yemen became independent 1967. Merged with Yemen 1990.
12. Asia, Middle East 1916-19.

Answer: Hejaz

Now a province of Saudi Arabia, this territory under Husein ibn- Ali revolted and proclaimed independence 1916. Its independence was guaranteed by the British. who turned them down. They were beaten by Ibn Saud in 1919.
13. Asia, Central 1890-1975.

Answer: Sikkim

Formerly a British protectorate ang kingdom, this territory voted 1975 to abolish monarchy and merge with India.
14. Asia, Central 1912-50.

Answer: Tibet

Tibet declared independence 1912 but was overthrown by Chinese 1950.
15. Asia, East 1932-45.

Answer: Manchukuo

Manchukuo was a formally independent state 1932-45 set up under Japanese influence, comprising the 3 provinces of Manchuria and Jehol.
16. Africa East, 1962-64.

Answer: Tanganyika

Independent state of Tanganyika established 1962, united with Zanzibar to Tanzania 1964.
17. Africa East, 1963-64.

Answer: Zanzibar

Zanzibar became an independent sultanate 1963 and a republic 1964. United with Tanganyika to Tanzania 1964.
18. Africa South 1854-1900.

Answer: Orange Free State

Orange Free State was established as a Boer republic 1854. Overcome by British during Boer War 1900.
19. Africa South, 1852-1877 and 1881-1900.

Answer: Transvaal

Transvaal had its independence acknowledged by British in 1852.The republic was restorated 1881 after British annexation 1877-81. Annexed as British crown colony 1900.
20. Pacific Ocean, 1844-1898.

Answer: Hawaii

Hawaii was recognized as independent by USA, Great Britain and France 1844. Annexed by USA 1898.
21. Caribbean Sea, 1967-71.

Answer: Anguilla

The union between the three islands Saint Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla became self governing state with the same name 1967. Union dissolved 1971. Anguilla left the state because the population preferred becoming a British dependency. Hence they had four years of 'independence'. St.Kitts and Nevis today is united as an independent country.
22. South America, 1899-1903.

Answer: Acre

This territory in the borderland between Bolivia, Brazil and Peru declared independence 1899. Annexed by Brazil 1903.
23. North America, 1836-45.

Answer: Texas

Republic of Texas gained independence 1836, but sought annexiation to USA and was admitted to Union 1845.
24. North America, 1832-1933.

Answer: Newfoundland

Newfoundland received representative government 1832 and responsible government 1855, which was withdrawn 1933. Became a British colony 1934 and became, with Labrador, a province of Canada 1949.
25. Finally back to Europe, 1919-39.

Answer: Danzig

The city, with adjoining territory, was established as Free City of Danzig 1919. Incorporated in Germany 1939.
