Legend has it that the Menehune, a race of pixielike critters, were the original inhabitants of Kauai. They are credited with building the fish pond in the village of Niumalu and the watercourse in Waimea Valley. Some Hawaiians believe these little folks still live in the wet, green forests of the Garden Isle.
