Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This historical monument was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay.

Answer: Gateway of India

The Gateway of India was designed by the British architect George Wittet and was opened to the general public in 1924. When colonial rule in India ended, the last of the British ships left for England from here.
2. This museum, which was also designed by George Wittet, was formerly known as Prince of Wales Museum.

Answer: Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sanghralaya

The foundation for this museum was laid by the Prince of Wales in 1905 and the building was completed in 1914. It also served as a Military Hospital for a short while during the First World War. The museum has an impressive collection of Indus Valley artifacts dating back to 2000 B.C. and Tibetan and Nepali art. It was recently renamed in honour of the Maratha Warrior.
3. These caves dating back to 600 A.D. are located on Gharapuri Island in Mumbai's harbour.

Answer: Elephanta Caves

The Elephanta Caves are hewn out of solid rock and filled with stone sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Gharapuri Island can be reached by boat from the Gateway of India. The stone elephant after which these caves have been named has been shifted to the Bhau Dali Ladd Museum (formerly known as Victoria and Albert Museum) located next to Jijamata Udyan.
4. This two-storied building is the former residence of Mahatma Gandhi.

Answer: Mani Bhavan

It has now been converted to a reference library with over 2000 books and other memorabilia from the Mahatma's life. Even an old charkha (spinning wheel) that was used by the Mahatma can be seen here.
5. These gardens occupy 48 acres in the heart of the city and also house a zoo.

Answer: Jijamata Udyan

These gardens were formerly known as Victoria Gardens and the locals still refer to it as Ranee Baug which means the Queen's Gardens. They contain some of the oldest trees in the city. On weekends, elephant rides are also available.
6. This heritage building was formerly the town hall.

Answer: Asiatic Library

The Asiatic Library has a collection of 800,000 antique volumes including a first edition copy of Dante's "Inferno". There is also a priceless collection of ancient coins; among them is a rare gold mohur which belonged to Akbar, the Mughal Emperor.
7. This station was christened to commemorate Victoria Jubilee Day in 1887 and was formerly known as Victoria Terminus.

Answer: Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Victoria Jubilee Day in 1887 was also the day the first steam engine ran between Bombay and Thane, about 45 km away. The station is still popularly known as VT.
8. This beautiful and imposing mosque is located in the middle of the sea.

Answer: Haji Ali Dargah

The Haji Ali Dargah can only be reached during low tide as it is situated about 500 yards into the sea. The mosque is built over the tomb of Saint Haji Ali. According to legend, he died on a pilgrimage to Mecca and his casket reached Bombay. It contained a note that said it should be buried wherever it landed. During high tide, the causeway leading to the Mosque is submerged and the Mosque appears to float on the sea.
9. For the last two questions we move away from heritage structures to the locals who are a unique feature of Mumbai. Name the place in Central Mumbai where you can watch rows of traditional laundry men at work.

Answer: Dhobi Ghat

Dhobis are traditional laundrymen, while the laundries are called ghats. At Dhobi Ghat near Saat Rasta at Mahalaxmi, over 200 dhobis work together. The dhobis collect dirty laundry from houses, wash and return it neatly ironed. At Dhobi Ghat there are rows of concrete wash pens, each with its own flogging stone.

It is now a familiar sight to see tourists filming this scene from the Mahalaxmi Station Bridge.
10. These simple tiffin carriers have become famous for their efficiency with Forbes business magazine giving them a Six Sigma rating.

Answer: Dabbawallas

The Dabbawallas have devised their own method to accurately deliver the lunch boxes (or "tiffins") that they collect from each house to the correct office. A "Six Sigma" rating means only one error in six million transactions. They have been invited to give lectures by premier institutes like the Confederation of Indian Industry. On his recent visit to India, Prince Charles met the Dabbawallas to congratulate them on their efficient methods.

They were also the only Indians invited to his wedding with Camilla Parker Bowles on April 8th, 2005 as his personal guests.
