Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You land directly at Munich's Franz Josef Strauss Airport. Which place of interest can you not visit during your stay in the city ?

Answer: Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein was built for recreation, thus built outside the Bavarian capital.
2. Near Munich you take a trip to the darkest era of German history when you visit the Concentration Camp in Dachau. In what year was it installed?

Answer: 1933

It was built to discourage political opposition in the year the Nazis took power. It was thus the first of its kind in Nazi Germany.
3. From Dachau you travel northwestward to the city of Augsburg. Besides having been the residence of the mighty Fugger family during the renaissance, this is also the native city of a famous German poet. Who?

Answer: Bertolt Brecht

Brecht may arguably be called the world´s most famous socialist poet.
4. Of course a visit to Germany would be incomplete without a stop at the fairy-tale like castle of Neuschwanstein. Which Bavarian ruler had it erected?

Answer: Ludwig II

Ludwig later lost his senses and is said to have drowned himself (or was he drowned?) in the lake by the castle.
5. You arrive at Frankfurt am Main, the banking center of Europe and the birthplace of Goethe. Frankfurt is also the city where the first German constitution was drafted. When did this take place?

Answer: 1848

German constitutionalism, however, was not very successful and German parliaments remained more or less powerless until the end of World War I.
6. You make a trip to the river Rhine and visit the rock that the Loreley sat on, luring boatmen into death with her enchanting voice. Which German poet wrote a famous poem about this mythical figure?

Answer: Heinrich Heine

'Ich weiss nicht, was soll es bedeuten, dass ich so traurig bin' - All Japanese tourists know that one by heart before they come to Germany.
7. In Cologne, you are standing before the enormous cathedral. True or false: In the middle Ages, the archbishop of Cologne was one of the seven privileged rulers who had the right to elect the King of Germany (who usually also became Holy Roman Emperor)?

Answer: True

Many German rulers of the middle ages struggled to become one of the seven electors. They were the most powerful man in the Holy Roman Empire, sometimes even more powerful than the Emperor himself. The Clergy had three, saecular rulers four electors. A selected King could become Emperor only if the pope granted that title to him.
8. Travelling to Eastern Germany, you stop at the beautiful city of Dresden. Located on the river Elbe, German parlance compares this city with what Italian center of arts?

Answer: Florence

Dresden lost many of its splendid buildings during 1945 when the city was bombed almost into annihilation.
9. In Potsdam near Berlin, you visit a palace built by famous Prussian King, Frederick II. Although known as a very strict and disciplined King, the name of this place suggests differently.

Answer: Sanssouci

`Without a worry or a care´.
10. In Berlin, you visit the remnants of the wall that once parted East and West Berlin, East and West Germany, the best known symbol of the Iron Curtain. It fell in 1989, but which year had it been erected?

Answer: 1961

In 1961, the East German Government erected the wall to more effectively prevent its citizens from fleeing to West Berlin.
