Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which South American country, south of Colombia and bordering the Pacific Ocean, has a condor as its national bird?

Answer: Ecuador

Ecuador is named after one of its geographical characteristics: namely the fact that it sits right at the equator. As well as bordering the Pacific Ocean on the west, it borders Peru on the east and south, where several rivers have also formed.
2. Which country is home to the both the world's tallest waterfall and the world's largest rodent?

Answer: Venezuela

Venezuela's shape has been described as that of an inverted triangle. At over 900,000 square kms, it is roughly twice the size of California. Venezuela is home to the Angel Falls, the tallest waterfall in the world. Along with the world's biggest rodent, the cabybara, Venezuela's diverse animals include the manatee, kingfisher and over 1,000 other bird species.
3. Which country is the second largest in South America by size?

Answer: Argentina

Argentina occupies a large part of the southern part of the South American continent, bordering no fewer than five countries (Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay and Chile) along with the Atlantic Ocean. While it is mainly made up of flat terrain, Argentina does have some mountainous areas.
4. Which landlocked South American country is bordered by Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia?

Answer: Paraguay

Paraguay and Bolivia are the only landlocked countries in South America. It has two major geographical regions: the Paraneņa region (made up of plateaus, hills and valleys) and the Chaco (plains region). Paraguay's flag is unique internationally in that the front of the flag is different to the back.

The front bears the national coat of arms, while the back has the seal of the national treasury.
5. What is the largest country in South America by size, represented by a distinctive flag of green, yellow and blue?

Answer: Brazil

Brazil's flag contains the phrase "Ordem e Progresso" which means "Order and Progress". Among the flag's central sphere are 27 stars, representing the federal districts. The gold represents the abundant gold reserves once found in Brazil.
6. Which country borders Brazil, Venezuela, Suriname and the Atlantic Ocean?

Answer: Guyana

Like several other South American countries, Guyana is known for its mineral wealth (hence the gold arrowhead on its flag, as it is known). The white represents water (like the country's name itself, meaning "land of waters").
7. The sun symbol used by Uruguay is based on the same symbol used by Argentina.

Answer: True

The 'Sun of May' is a national symbol shared by both Uruguay and Argentina, representing the Incan god of the sun, Inti. The nine stripes on Uruguay's flag represent the nine geographical departments. Uruguay is largely made up of grassy plains, and is quite mild in climate (only reaching about 23 degrees Celcius, or 74 Fahrenheit, at the peak of summer).
8. Which South American country is long and thin in shape, bordering both the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean?

Answer: Chile

Chile gained independence from Spain in 1812. Its geography is distinctive, with a length of over 4,000km but a width of only less than 200km on average. This leads to a very diverse set of geographical conditions across the country, ranging from mountains, to rugged coastlines, and the Atacama Desert (one of the driest places in the world).
9. Which South American country, home to both Machu Picchu and Paracas National Reserve, shares borders with five other countries?

Answer: Peru

Peru is in western South America, bordered by Ecuador and Colombia (north), Brazil (east), Bolivia (southeast), Chile (south) and the Pacific Ocean (west).
10. Which country in northwest South America borders both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean?

Answer: Colombia

Colombia's unique position spanning two coastal regions (as well as the Andes and the Amazon jungle) means that it has an interesting mix of climates. Most of the country has two of each wet and dry seasons. Interestingly, most of Colombia also has an equal amount of daylight and nighttime hours. Colombia is also a very ethnically diverse country, with an estimated sixty or more regional dialects.
