Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston was the highest ranking officer to be killed during the American Civil War. In what battle, with a Hebrew sounding name, did this happen?

Answer: Shiloh

The battle was named after Shiloh Church, a small wooden structure near Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. General Johnston was mortally wounded while leading his men in a charge against a Union position known as the "Hornet's Nest." It is possible that the bullet that hit him was fired accidentally by his own men following from behind.

Answer: Franz Ferdinand

4. In the late 1830s the U.S. forced over 10,000 Cherokee to leave their homes in Georgia and Tennessee and move west of the Mississippi River. What is the name of this forced emigration?

Answer: The Trail of Tears

The Cherokee were not the only Native Americans forced against their will to leave their homes in the east for new lands in the west. Other groups moved against their will in the 1830s included the Sauk, Kickapoo, Potawatomi, and Illini, to name just a few. President Andrew Jackson, who implemented these removals, remains disliked by Indian peoples to this day.

5. The year 2012 was famous for the rumors that the end of the world was imminent, but on which date was it predicted to happen?

Answer: 21st Dec, 2012

It was predicted that on 21st Dec, 2012 the world would come to an end, either by the earth collapsing into a blackhole or by colliding into a planet called Nibiru. However on the actual day itself none of these things materialised. The ancient Mayans are credited - probably inaccurately - for predicting this.

6. 19th century soldiers in the British Army could receive temperance medals for giving up which substance?

Answer: Alcohol

Drunkenness was a big problem in the Army in the 19th century, particularly in India during the Colonial era. Men spent a lot of time in the barracks without much to occupy them in their abundant free time: servants did the menial jobs that soldiers would ordinarily do.

In an attempt to control the problem, abstinence groups were set up and medals were awarded for abstaining for different lengths of time from six months to twenty years.

7. Why was tobacco smoking not a popular indulgence in 14th century Europe?

Answer: Europeans did not know about tobacco

Tobacco is indigenous to the Americas. It was not until the explorations of Columbus in 1492, that it became known to Europeans. Tobacco had been used in the Americas for centuries where it was used in religious rituals, not recreationally, because at high doses tobacco can cause hallucinations.

9. Theodore Roosevelt was the first U.S. President to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Which President, who pushed for the League of Nations after World War I, was the second?

Answer: Woodrow Wilson

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was the United States President from 1913 to 1921. His re-election success was largely due to his commitment to not involve the U.S. in World War I but he did so in 1917. He was the driving force behind the formation of the League of Nations, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Ironically, the U.S. Senate refused to ratify the agreement.

The League of Nations lacked enforcement ability, and was ineffective. It was dissolved and replaced by the United Nations in 1945.
