Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long did Hitler envision the Third Reich lasting?

Answer: 1,000 years.

The motto of the Third Reich became: "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer." (One people, one Reich, one leader - but best left untranslated).

The Third Reich lasted for 12 years.
2. In what year did Hitler start secondary school?

Answer: 1900

Hitler was BORN in 1889 (20 April).

Hitler's father, Alois, decided to send Adolf to Linz Realschule. Hitler attended this school in Linz from 1900 until 1904.

Hitler did not do too well at school and left with a poor opinion of the school system and the teachers. He claimed that some of his teachers "had something wrong with them mentally".

At the time the Austrian school system for secondary students was split into three categories. The Elementarschule was the lowest, the Realschule was in the middle and the Gymnasium was the highest level of school.
3. At what point in Hitler's life did his mother, Klara, die?

Answer: In 1907, after he had applied for admission to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.

Hitler's mother, Klara, died of breast cancer in 1907 at the age of 47.

Her doctor, Eduard Bloch, was Jewish and Hitler claimed that he owed him a great deal of gratitude. Despite Hitler's passionate hatred for the Jews, when he assumed control over Austria he allowed the good doctor to leave the country.

Bloch moved to America and so avoided the Holocaust.
4. When World War I broke, Hitler joined the army. What unit did he join?

Answer: 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment.

The 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment was known at the "List Regiment". The commander of the unit was Oberst Julius List.

Prior to WW1 the Austrian Army had requested Hitler to sign up for military service in the armed forces. He was found to be 'unfit for duty' (!).

After WW1 broke out he signed up for the German army instead. Hitler volunteered for service on the 16th of August 1914. By the 29th of October, 1914 he finally saw action on the front.
5. During his time in the trenches of WW1 Hitler became attached to a dog. What was the name of that dog?

Answer: Fuchsl.

Fuchsl (or Little Fox) was a white terrier. All of Hitler's affections went towards Fuchsl. Fuchsl later went missing (presumed stolen) and Hitler was devastated.

Hitler later had a German Shepherd dog called Blondi.

Apparently Hitler thought that boxer breed of dogs were "degenerate".
6. What happened to Hitler on 4 August 1918?

Answer: He was awarded the Iron Cross, First Class.

He was awarded the Iron Cross, First Class on that date. This was quite an honour for an ordinary soldier in the German Army. Ironically (once again), the officer who recommended that him for Iron Cross was a Jewish lieutenant called Hugo Gutmann.

Hitler was promoted in 1915.

He was wounded on the 7th of October 1916.

He was gassed on the 13th of October 1918.
7. In 1919 Hitler joined the German Workers' Party (Deutsche Arbeiterparti - DAP). What membership number was he allocated?

Answer: 555

Hitler was the 55th member of the DAP. Confused? Read on!

His membership card showed that he was member number 555, but the cards started at number 501 in order to try and make the membership look bigger than it was in reality.

Hitler claimed that he was the seventh member of the party but this was later proved false. He was, however, the seventh *executive* member of the party's committee.
8. After Hitler took control of the DAP the "Beer Hall Putsch" took place which led to Hitler doing a stint in prison. What sentence was handed down to him?

Answer: 5 years.

Hitler was the leader of the "Beer Hall Putsch" that took place on the 8th of November 1923.

This failed coup ended up with Hitler and others being tried for high treason in 1924.

Hitler was sent to Landsberg prison. It wasn't too bad for the future dictator; he managed to put on weight from eating too much!

In the end, he only served about 8 months in jail.
9. These names are all associated with the "Beer Hall Putsch". Who is the ODD one out?

Answer: Lorenz Ritter von Stransky.

Lorenz Ritter von Stransky was a Nazi that was killed during the failed coup. All the other names were those of policemen that died as a result (Fink, Hollweg and Schobert).

16 Nazis and 4 police died during the altercation.

Hitler dedicated his book, "Mein Kampf", to Stransky.
10. On 27 February, 1925 Hitler gave his first public speech following his release from prison. Where did Hitler conduct his speech?

Answer: At the same beer hall that the Putsch took place.

The speech was held at the Bürgerbräukeller Beer Hall, the same beer hall that the 'Beer Hall Putsch' had started from.

It has been said that 'the beer halls of Bavaria were the true locale of Nazism'.

Over 4,000 people were admitted into the venue, and thousands attempting to get in were denied entry.

Between 1933 and 1939 Hitler would return to the beer hall annually to give a speech and commemorate the Putsch. In 1939 an assassination attempt was made on Hitler's life at the Bürgerbräukeller Beer Hall and the building suffered substantial damage from a bomb.
