Answer: 1867

March 1st 1867. After the Civil War and because of the Homestead Act of 1862 people were coming into Nebraska to claim government land. The first homestead in Nebraska claimed under the act was near Beatrice Nebraska.
2. What is the capital of Nebraska?

Answer: Lincoln

Lincoln was chosen after Nebraska became a state. Omaha was the territorial capital but when Nebraska became a state the people voted to move it to Lincoln.
3. What river did the pioneers follow through Nebraska?

Answer: Platte River

The pioneers followed the Platte and then the north branch of the Platte. The Oregon and California Trail followed the south side of the river and the Mormon Trail followed the north side. The Pony Express also followed the south side.
4. What number did Nebraska enter the Union as?

Answer: 37th

Nebraska was the first state to join the Union after the Civil War. The Union Pacific was building the railroad through the state at this time, and with it came the settlers.
5. What city did Buffalo Bill call home in the late 1800's and early 1900's?

Answer: North Platte

North Platte. Buffalo Bill's home and grounds including his famous barn is a state historical park. Buffalo Bill Cody called his home Scouts' Rest Ranch.

Cherry county is the largest with 5,961 square miles and a population of only 5,788. Sarpy county is the smallest with 241 square miles and a population of 169,331.

The Missouri River was followed by Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery on their way to the Pacific Ocean. The Missouri River and Ohio River are the biggest tributaries of the Mississippi River.

Answer: The Sandhills

The Sandhills are a National Natural Landmark. The majority of the Sandhills have never been plowed. The Sandhills are divided between state parks and cattle ranches. The World Wide Fund for Nature has designated the area an ecoregion.

Answer: North Platte

North Platte. The rivers meet about two miles east of the city. The South Platte River has been described by the pioneers as "a mile wide and an inch deep". Both the North Platte and South Platte rivers have their headwaters in Colorado.
