Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Battle of the Nile is often referred to by the name of the bay where the action took place. Name the bay.

Answer: Aboukir

The French chose Aboukir Bay since it allowed room for the warships to anchor and manoeuvre. Alexandria's new port would only allow access and egress to two vessels at a time. This was satisfactory for merchant vessels but not so good for a battle fleet.
2. Who commanded the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile?

Answer: Vice Admiral Brueys

Although Napoleon was in overall command of the expedition, Brueys was given command of the naval forces. Brueys had fought the Royal Navy before, as a lieutenant under De Grasse in 1780.
3. Name the French Admiral's flagship at the Battle of the Nile.

Answer: L'Orient

L'Orient was the only three decker present during the battle. She was listed as a 120 gun first rate ship, and was an impressive vessel according to several accounts by those who saw her.
4. The French flagship escaped the Battle of the Nile and fought again at Trafalgar?

Answer: False

L'Orient was engaged by HMS Bellerophon at the beginning of the action but her fire soon dismasted her opponent and forced her withdrawal. HMS Swiftsure then took up position off her bow while HMS Alexander took position at her stern. A fire soon started in the stern. At about 11.30pm the fire reached L'Orient's magazines and the three decker exploded.
5. Name Nelson's flagship at the Battle of the Nile?

Answer: HMS Vanguard

Nelson was to have taken command of HMS Foudrayant (80 guns) but her construction had been delayed. Instead he was given HMS Vanguard (74 guns). Her construction had been ordered in December 1779 although construction only started in October 1782.
6. Captain Sir Sidney Smith who aided in the defence of Acre was known as what by Nelson?

Answer: The Swedish Knight

Captain Smith's knighthood was gained after three years service with the Swedish Navy. His use of the title was regarded as a breach of etiquette when used outside of Sweden. Acre had once been defended by Richard the Lionheart.
7. What happened to the Turkish garrison at Jaffa?

Answer: They were murdered

The garrison surrendered on 7th March 1799, believing they would be granted mercy. Napoleon felt he did not have enough resources to support prisoners and ordered their mass execution. Many were shot from boats as they tried to swim away from the shore.
8. What difference was there between British and French firing techniques?

Answer: Gun Lock (B) vs Slow Match (F)

The French Navy's continued use of the slow match caused a slight delay between applying the fire to the touch hole and the charge firing. This meant that the ship could roll further, causing most shots to go high. Although the French did prefer to fire at the rigging of an enemy.
9. What did Nelson receive from the Turkish Sultan for his victory at the Nile?

Answer: A Chelengk

The Chelengk was Nelson's most striking decoration. A spray of Brazilian diamonds that were worn in his hat. A cluster in the centre glittered as it slowly rotated by clockwork. The decoration was stolen and broken up in 1951.
10. Which island was captured by the British on 7th November 1798?

Answer: Minorca

The island was captured by Commodore John Duckworth's squadron. The Spanish put up little resistance and the capture was made without any British loss. It was aided by the fact that the French fleet was away with Napoleon.
