Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which leader unified the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ?

Answer: Abdul Aziz ibn Saud

Abdul Aziz's family, the Al Saud, have had three goes at creating a unified kingdom on the Arabian peninsula. The first of the three Saudi states lasted from 1744-1818 and was destroyed by the Ottoman empire, unhappy at the growing power of the Saudis within their kingdom.

The second state lasted from 1824-1891, when it fell victim to family squabbles and was finally overthrown by a rival tribe. The Al Saud family went into exile in Kuwait for 20 years until Abdul Aziz regained his kingdom by conquering Riyadh in 1902.
2. In what year did King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud die?

Answer: 1953

Abdul Aziz left an unknown number of children by an unknown number of wives. His offspring is estimated at between 80 to 100, including 37 sons and uncounted daughters.
3. Who succeeded King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud ?

Answer: Saud ibn Abdul Aziz

The succession to the Saudi monarchy is currently limited to sons or grandsons of Abdul Aziz. As he was born around 1880, it can be seen that age presents a problem in choosing a successor.
4. Who ruled as King in Saudi Arabia between 1975 to 1982?

Answer: Khalid ibn Abdul Aziz

Khalid was not very interested in becoming King, preferring to spend time in traditional Bedouin ways. He came to rule as a result of compromises between the sons of Abdul Aziz, and his half brother Fahd ibn Abdul Aziz had effective control of the country
5. Who was the Saudi Arabian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources between 1962 and 1986

Answer: Ahmed Zaki Yamani

Ahmed Yamani's last name indicates that his family originated in Yemen. In 1956 he started the first organised law firm in Saudi Arabia.
6. What was the original source of the wealth of the bin Laden family ?

Answer: Construction

Mohammed bin Laden emigrated to what became Saudi Arabia from his native Yemen before the First World War. He became responsible for all religious buiding work in the kingdom and went on to father at least 54 children, including Osama bin Laden.
7. Of the 19 hijackers involved in the 9/11 attacks on the US, how many were Saudis?

Answer: 15

Fifteen of them were citizens of Saudi Arabia, two were from the United Arab Emirates, one was from Lebanon, and one from Egypt. This percentage led the Saudi Arabian government to increase their efforts to control terrorism on their own soil.
8. In what year was slavery abolished in Saudi Arabia ?

Answer: 1962

Approximately 4,000 individuals were released. President John F. Kennedy used his influence to persuade King Faisal to abolish the institution.
9. What are the colours on the Saudi Arabian flag ?

Answer: Green and White

The Saudi flag is perhaps the only one in the world that cannot be flown at half-mast. This is because the Islamic creed - 'There is but one God and Muhammad is his Prophet' - is displayed on the flag and it would be sacriligious to lower the creed.
10. How many times did the Saudi Arabian football team qualify for the Soccer World Cup between 1930 and 2006 ?

Answer: 4

In 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006.
