Rosecrans' Command was nearly surrounded and being starved out of Chattanooga by the Rebels. He approved the plan in hopes of disrupting the Confederate supply line from Atlanta via the Western & Atlantic RR.

The site of Streights' first determined repulse of the Rebels. Although he soundly defeated the Confederates and sent them running, he was convinced it was just the Vanguard of Forrests' Calvary and quickly withdrew after the battle towards his goal.

The place is made of white Sandstone and is very rocky and narrow for fighting. The Raiders were forced to abandon their rearguard cannon as a result of this skirmish. If you get the chance, it's a must see place. The view is 270 degrees of Lake Weiss, there are huge outcroppings of sandstone, caverns, caves, and a lot of great climbing areas.

Forrest sent a cavalry detachment ahead to destroy the bridge at Cave Springs. Streights' men warn out and disgusted, laid down to rest and were soon surrounded.
