Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do Australians call confectionery?

Answer: lollies

"Candy" is occasionally heard, usually by teenagers brought up on a diet of American television. "Sweets" is more often used to refer to dessert.
2. Which iconic Australian confectionery gained a reputation for being rolled down the aisles at movie theatres?

Answer: Jaffas

Jaffas are balls of chocolate with an orange-flavoured shell. They were often rolled down the aisles and caused distraction as they bounced down the steps. Personally, I always thought it a waste of a good chocolate!
3. Which confectionery item had the slogan "It's moments like these you need ___________" ?

Answer: Minties

Minties (hard, chewy mints) came in a wrapper with a cartoon depicting a perilous or embarrassing situation and the slogan "It's moments like these you need Minties"
4. Which aniseed flavoured sticks could be sucked until pointed at one end?

Answer: slate pencils

Slate pencils are still available and are just as delicious as when I was a child.
5. Choo Choo Bars were a popular confectionery when I was a child. What was their flavour?

Answer: aniseed

Choo Choo bars were black, chewy bars with a picture of a train on the wrapper (hence the name - double meaning) which left the eaters with black teeth and tongue and a big, black grin as they were delicious.
6. Which of the following do not make chocolate bars in Australia?

Answer: Hershey

Hershey Bars are imported from the US. Whilst Cadbury is an international brand, all its chocolates are made in Australia. An important ritual when in Tasmania is to visit the Cadbury factory, whose enticing smells can bewitch for some distance! Verve is a new player on the Australian market, and Newman's is a Sydney staple which has been around for a long time.
7. What confectionery item is a speciality of South Australia?

Answer: fru-chocs

These are bite-size pieces of fruit with a nougat-like texture, coated in milk chocolate. They were originally found only in South Australia, but can now occasionally be obtained elsewhere.
8. What were rosy apples?

Answer: hard sweets on a stick, coloured red and green

Rosy apples were a school tuckshop staple. They were just the right size to fill the mouth and could be made to last a very long time!
9. A soft, homemade toffee was known as a _______.

Answer: stickjaw

Whilst the hard toffees certainly earned a reputation as toothbreakers, the sticky ones were known as "stickjaws" and were very popular, much to the annoyance of parents and the delight of dentists!
10. If you wanted to impress your date with chocolates during the middle years of the twentieth century, what boxed chocolates might you buy?

Answer: Cadbury's Roses

Cadbury's Roses were one of only a few kinds of boxed chocolates available at that time. Lindt Lindor (yum!) is a much newer player on the block, having only been available since the '90s. The other two varieties I made up, although they are both available brands.
