Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where were the first Bonsais from originally?

Answer: China

They are believed to have originated in China around 1500 years ago. They were then introduced into Japan around 1200 years ago.
2. How often should replacing the soil in the root system be done?

Answer: Depends on the age and species of the tree

Ideally this should be done in late winter or early spring to prevent the roots from rotting.
3. Which of the following is NOT a suggested method of watering your indoor Bonsai?

Answer: Heavy waterings separated by long periods of no water

Ideally the soil should not be allowed to get too dry or too waterlogged. For this purpose it is good to give it a little water everyday in the summer and every few days in the winter.
4. A few questions on various styles now. Which style has a straight vertical trunk with the branches in horizontal positions?

Answer: Formal upright

Even if the trunk is not completely straight, this style can still be achieved by wiring the trunk to manipulate it.
5. What is a Jin?

Answer: A dead branch with no bark left

This can make the tree seem older than it really is. Literati is the style of tree with no branches on the lower trunk.
6. Which of the following is not a method of propagating Bonsais?

Answer: Leaf mining

Leaf miners are actually a type of pest that can attack a Bonsai. They feed on the soft inner tissue creating blister like appearances. Air layering is where you leave the branch in question attatched to the tree, the bark is peeled off and a bag full of soil is placed around the exposed wood.

The 'mother' tree sustains the branch whilst it grows roots. This is a handy method for getting a fully grown Bonsai with an interesting design.
7. Which of the following choices is a tool used in caring for a Bonsai?

Answer: They all are

All of these can be used in caring for your Bonsai, but that doesn't mean you have to. I use a fork as a root hook and normal scissors to trim the branches.
8. Which style is a tall pot ideal for?

Answer: Cascade

It enhances the form of the cascading style so it can be seen at its best. A semi-Cascade is best in a square pot and a Literati is best suited to a round pot.
9. What disease appears as slightly raised orange/yellow spots?

Answer: Rust

Rust can be treated by removing the infected leaves and and spraying the tree with Zinc-based fungicide.
10. One of the most common styles is planting Bonsais on a rock. What must you do in order for this to look effective?

Answer: All of these

If you follow all of these you should end up with a natural and beautiful landscape.
