Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is NOT an In-N-Out slogan?

Answer: Freshness is a way of life

In-N-Out prides itself on making things the old-fashioned way, on giving customers the freshest and highest quality food, and on providing service to its customers in a visibly clean environment. For In-N-Out, freshness is a way of life, but the phrase has never been used as a company slogan.
2. Many In-N-Out locations have crossing palm trees in front. Which movie was the inspiration behind this practice?

Answer: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Stanley Kramer's "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", a film about a search for hidden treasure, was In-N-Out founder Harry Snyder's favorite movie. As it turns out, the treasure was buried beneath "the big W" made by four palms. The two middle trees crossed to form an 'X'.

The crossed palms also fit the traditional In-N-Out palm tree motif, which is a reflection of the company's roots in Southern California.
3. Which of the following items are NOT available for order at In-N-Out cookout trailers?

Answer: fries

In-N-Out's self-contained cookout trailers can be rented for private or corporate events. The charge is 75% of the total estimated order (minimum $1,250) for 1.5 hours. The trailer offers hamburgers, cheeseburgers, double-doubles, grilled cheese, 21 oz. fountain drinks, and potato chips. Fries are not available to purchase from mobile units, since a hot oil vat in a moving vehicle is considered unsafe for obvious reasons. Shakes are also not available. Trailers are sometimes used to support stores during grand openings or power failures, and every few weeks they are used to feed the homeless.
4. Who became the company's fifth president?

Answer: Mark Taylor

Harry and Esther Snyder founded In-N-Out in 1948. Harry died in 1976, at which point his eldest son Rich Snyder took over. Rich died in a plane crash in 1993, and the mantle passed to his brother Guy. Guy fathered one daughter, Lynsi, who was to be Harry and Esther's only grandchild. Guy died of a Vicodin overdose in 1999. Esther thus became the fourth president. Mark Taylor served as the Vice President of Operations until the death of Esther Snyder on August 4, 2006, when he assumed the presidency.

He is married to Lynsi's half sister.
5. Which item includes a reference to the following text: "The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust him"?

Answer: double-double wrapper

The double-double wrapper lists Nahum 1:7, which is the reference to the text in the question. John 3:16 is printed on soda cups, Proverbs 3:5 on milkshake cups, and Revelation 3:20 on hamburger and cheeseburger wrappers.
6. Which of the following varieties of fries does In-N-Out NOT offer?

Answer: garlic fries

There are several ways to customize a fries order at In-N-Out. Fries well done are cooked longer for extra crisp. Fries lightly well are left in longer than normal, but not as long as fries well, so they aren't as crisp and don't soak up as much oil. Customers can specify an amount of time for which they want their fries cooked (e.g. 30-second fries). Fries light are almost raw fries that are cooked for less time. Animal Style fries come with cheese, spread, and grilled onions. Customers may also order fries with cheese.

These fries come with two slices of cheese melted on top.
7. Which celebrity couple served up In-N-Out burgers for all their guests at their wedding reception?

Answer: Landon Donovan and Bianca Kajilch

Soccer star Landon Donovan, of LA Galaxy and World Cup 2002 and 2006 fame, married actress Bianca Kajlich (Bring it On, Halloween: Resurrection) on December 31, 2006. The couple surprised guests with the not-so-traditional fare, and provided a karaoke machine for entertainment.
8. In-N-Out's menu is simple, but there are literally hundreds of ways to customize orders. Which of the following can not be added to In-N-Out burgers?

Answer: mayonnaise

Mustard and pickles are part of the Animal Style order. Animal Style burgers also include extra sauce and grilled onions. Of course, these can be added separately if desired. Customers may also ask for chopped chilies to add mild chopped chili peppers to the bottom side of the burger.
9. On what date did In-N-Out open its doors for the first time?

Answer: October 22, 1948

The first location was opened on October 22, 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park, California. It would be almost three years before a second location would open.
10. A customer orders a Flying Dutchman to-go. How is this burger assembled?

Answer: meat, cheese, cheese, meat

A Flying Dutchman is simply two meat patties and two slices of melted cheese. For to-go orders, it is assembled with the two cheese slices between the meat and placed in a wrapper. For eat-in orders, the bottom meat patty is placed on a wrapper, and the Dutchman is arranged with alternating meat and cheese.
