Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first favorite Halloween candy is this 1923 invention by Frank C. Mars. Despite popular belief, this nougat and caramel bar topped with milk chocolate is named after a milkshake, not a galaxy. Which fun treat is this?

Answer: Milky Way

The Milky Way bar differs slightly depending on geographical location. For instance, in Europe, the Milky Way does not contain caramel. Milky Way also has different variants. The Milky Way Midnight, is made with dark chocolate and there is a Simply Caramel version that contains no nougat.
2. I am a huge fan of mints, so it is hard for me to pick just one. But by a narrow margin, I would say my favorite mints are these tiny chocolate-coated ones first produced by James O. Welch Company in 1949 that are named after a story collection from "The New Yorker" and were featured prominently in a classic episode of "Seinfeld." Which bite-sized treats are these?

Answer: Junior Mints

Junior Mints, as of 1993, are produced by Tootsie Roll Industries. The company also produces Junior Caramels. The candy is named after "The New Yorker" story collection called "Junior Miss" by Sally Benson. "The Junior Mint" episode of "Seinfeld" is a classic one where a Junior Mint accidentally falls into a patient on the operating table.

In the episode, a York Peppermint Patty had to be used instead because a Junior Mint was too small to be picked up on camera.
3. I was rarely (if ever) allowed to eat Pixy Stix as a kid. However, as an adult, my favorite flavor is "blue" which in reality is what flavor?

Answer: Maui Punch

There are four official flavors of Pixy Stix - Maui Punch, Grape, Orange and Cherry. Pixy Stix are manufactured by Nestle as part of the Willy Wonka label. The product was introduced in 1942 and called Lik-M-Aid. In 1959, they were renamed Pixy Stix and packaged in the iconic paper straw.
4. Speaking of Pixy Stix, my next favorite candy is also a Wonka creation and made with the same recipe as Pixy Stix, only in disc form. What is the proper spelling of this candy's name?

Answer: SweeTarts

SweeTarts were introduced in 1963 as a response to parents wanting a neater candy for their children rather than the popular but messy Pixy Stix. Parents were also concerned that the way Pixy Stix had to be eaten was a choking hazard.
5. What was the occupation of H.B. Reese, the man who invented one of my favorite candies in 1928: the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup?

Answer: Dairy farmer

Reese owned a dairy farm in Hershey, Pennsylvania for the Hershey chocolate company. When the farm closed, he was inspired by Milton Hershey to develop his own candy and the peanut butter cup was born.
6. One of my favorite candies of all time are Smarties, the American version, not the international version. The American Smarties are essentially flavored sugar tablets but what kind of candy are the Smarties sold in other countries?

Answer: Sugar coated chocolate

Smarties are similar to M&Ms in Europe and Canada in that they are chocolate pieces coated with colored sugar. They are manufactured by Nestle. The American Smarties are produced by the Smarties Candy Company. American Smarties are called Rocket in Canada where both varieties of Smarties are sold.
7. How many fingers of Kit Kat are traditionally packaged in the fun-sized version usually distributed on Halloween?

Answer: Two

There are two fingers or stick of Kit Kat in each fun-sized version. Although the four-fingered bar is considered the original size, the two-fingered version has been the best selling variety for decades. Kit Kats have been manufactured in many different sizes and flavors. There is even a Kit Kat ice cream.
8. Which Mars Inc. treat that advertises itself as a "chocolate caramel cookie bar" is a favorite of mine?

Answer: Twix

Twix was first introduced in 1967 in Britain. It didn't become popular until the 1980s elsewhere in the world, making Twix fairly young for a popular candy bar. Since that time more varieties have been introduced including cookies and cream and gingerbread. Many of these varieties were only available for a limited time or seasonally.
9. I'm a huge fan of Nerds candy from the Willy Wonka Company. Which of the following is an actual flavor of Nerds?

Answer: Road Rash Raspberry

Some flavors of Nerds are named traditionally, such as grape, while others are more creative, like Road Rash Raspberry. Usually, nerds com in boxes of two flavors but also come in larger boxes that can contain most of the currently produced flavors.
10. I never "feel like a nut" (well gastronomically speaking) which is why I prefer this almond-less version of what Hershey's coconut candy?

Answer: Mounds

Almond Joy and Mounds were advertised with the slogan "sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you don't." Almond Joys and Mounds are essentially the same candy except that Almond Joys have an almond (obviously) and are dipped in milk chocolate while Mounds have no almond and are dipped in dark chocolate.
