Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When and where did Fanta originate?

Answer: Nazi Germany, 1940

The Fanta soft drink popular all over the world was introduced in Germany in 1940 when the Coca-Cola bottling plant there was closed down during World War II due to a halt in commerce between the U.S. and Germany. With no more access to Coca-Cola syrup, they had to look for other sources of sweeteners and in so doing they invented Fanta.
2. What was the original Fanta soda pop flavored with to sweeten it?

Answer: Apple fibers and whey

Max Keith was the CEO of that German Coca-Cola plant in Germany when it was shut down. He was the one who spearheaded attempts to create a new fruit flavored drink but it meant finding new kinds of sweeteners. They wound up using scraps of apple in cider presses along with whey. Fanta was created. The sugar content was very high with this new recipe, but it became very popular.
3. How did the name "Fanta" come to be?

Answer: German for "imagination"

The name 'Fanta' was born during a contest amongst the company's employees to come up with a name for the new beverage. CEO Max Keith, told everyone to let their "Fantasie" guide them. "Fantasie" is German for imagination. Upon hearing that, salesman Joe Knipp simply called out the name Fanta.

In what country however has Fanta itself been renamed as Hit?

Answer: Venezuela

Hit was introduced more than 40 years ago in Venezuela. The other countries listed as choices were formed less than 40 years ago. Answer: Australia and New Zealand

Spider Chocolate and Spider Strawberry were limited edition flavors in Australia, and Spider Chocolate Orange took the very unusual extra step in soft drink conception by combining soda and a dairy component to create something similar to an ice cream soda, or egg cream perhaps as we in the U.S. might call it.

But this flavor was a limited-edition for Halloween. Australia's famed Hungry Jack's food franchise sold them.
10. After Germany discontinued Fanta production during the war, it took until 1955 for Coca-Cola to relaunch Fanta. Where was the orange Fanta drink made for the first time back in 1955?

Answer: Italy

During those war years when Germany couldn't produce soda, the plant was handed over to the Dutch Coca-Cola plant. The Netherlands however had a different recipe than Germany's. They used elderberries a main ingredients. But when rival soda company Pepsi-Cola introduced their own line of soft drinks during the 1950s, Coca-Cola decided to reincarnate Fanta in 1955.

It was produced for the first time then in Naples, Italy.
