Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the uncle of more than half the gods and is doomed to rule over the dead?

Answer: Hades

Hades is the uncle of more than half of the gods. Like Zeus, Hades is usually represented as a vigorous bearded man. His symbol is the scepter or horn of plenty. His wife is Persephone. His pets include Cerberus, black horses, and various other hounds
2. What are Hestia's parents?

Answer: Titans

Hestia is the daughter of the Titans Kronos and Rhea. She is the sister of Zeus. She is a sweet, modestly dressed young woman. She often is shown wearing a veil. Her symbols are the hearth and the tamed fire which burns there.
3. Who was the first Olympian?

Answer: Hestia

Hestia is the oldest child of Kronos and Rhea. She is constant, calm, gentle, and supportive of the family and home. She has no children. Hestia is one of three goddesses immune to the influence of Aphrodite. She cannot be forced to love anyone.
4. Who is the mother of Ares?

Answer: Hera

Ares is a bearded, good-looking man in the prime of life. His symbol is the spear. He is also associated with vultures and dogs. He is decisive, determined, and fearless. He does not have a spouse and his main love is war.
5. Who is the patron god of the oracle Delphi?

Answer: Apollo

Apollo is a young man with curly golden hair. His symbols include the Sun itself, the lyre (a type of musical instrument), the bow, and the chariot he drives across the sky daily, borrowed from an earlier pre-Greek Sun god, Helios. He is creative, handsome, supportive of all the arts of civilization. He was born on the sunny Greek island of Delos along with his twin sister Artemis.
6. When this god was a baby he stole cattle. Who is he?

Answer: Hermes

When he was a baby, he stole Apollo's cattle by tricking him into walking backward, but later they became very good friends. He is a handsome young man with a winged hat, winged sandals, and a golden staff twined with serpents. He is clever, bold, determined, athletic, a powerful magician.

He can charm monsters with his flute or lyre music. He was born in a cave on Mount Cylene in Arcadia to Maia, who had just slept with his father Zeus the night before. Talk about quick consequences!
7. Who is the god of games?

Answer: Hermes

Hermes is the god of games, business, thieves, and story telling. Hermes is the herald of the gods and also leads human souls into and occasionally out of the underworld. Zeus uses him as a troubleshooter and secret-agent type, dispatching him to take care of assorted problems - he puts Argos to sleep so Io can escape from Zeus's outraged wife Hera.

Hermes also arranges for Odysseus to slip away from Callisto, among many other tasks.
8. What goddess has a daughter who is cursed to stay in the underworld with Hades for half of the year?

Answer: Demeter

Demeter is a pleasant-looking mature woman, generally with a veil over her head though her face is visible. Her symbols include an ear of wheat and the Horn of Plenty (Cornucopia), and she is often seen carrying one or both of these items. Demeter controls the fertility of the earth as goddess of Agriculture. Her daughter is Persephone.
9. What god was in a competition for the love of the people of the area around the Acropolis with Athena?

Answer: Poseidon

Poseidon is a bearded, older man usually pictured with seashells and other sealife. He usually holds a trident. His symbol is the three-pronged trident. He is associated with horses, believed to be seen in the crashing of waves on the shore. He is also believed to be the force behind earthquakes, an odd expansion of the power of a sea god, but possibly due to the association between earthquakes and tsunamis in Greece.

Some scholars believe he was first a god of the earth and earthquakes, and only later took on the role of sea god.
10. Which goddess was born from foam in the sea when two gods were fighting?

Answer: Aphrodite

Aphrodite was born when two gods were fighting. One god stabbed the other, and the blood fell into the sea. Where the blood fell, it started to foam. Out of the foam a beautiful full-grown woman appeared. Aphrodite's name means white foam; her Roman name was Venus. Aphrodite was the most beautiful goddess; her beauty lured gods and mortal alike.
