Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This word, combined with 'Abstraction' is used to describe the third generation of Abstract Expressionists...name it!

Answer: Lyrical

No one really understands exactly what 'Lyrical Abstraction' means, the term has purposefully been left vague. It is believed that the term was first coined the French painter Georges Mathiew who described art as 'Abstraction Lyrique'. It has been used to describe the art of several movements including Art Informel, Minimal Art and Pop Art, and has sometimes been presented in a similar light with Fauvism...for its ample use of color.
2. Another term for 'Rayonism' it was a style of art practiced by the Russian husband and wife team Goncharova and Larionov during the early 1910s. What is this movement also called?

Answer: Luchism

Rayonism, aka Luchism, was the Russian answer to the Italian Futurist movement. This movement was launched with the famous Target Exhibition in 1913, held in Moscow but died out after several years when the two key figures Goncharova and Larionov turned away from the brush.
3. Smithson, Heizer and Long, and sometimes Christo, are associated with which 'L' art movement?

Answer: Land Art

Land Art is also called Earth Art or Earthworks and usually created on a very large scale, which can be clearly seen with the works of Christo and Smithson.
4. In the American sense, this word refers to itinerant artists of the 17th and 18th centuries who painted portraits anonymously for a living. What term am I describing?

Answer: Limner

The term Limner was used in the United States in the same way the term 'Master of...' was used in Europe, with the city, town or area most associated with the artists attached, i.e. Master of Flamelle and Schuyler Limner.
5. Linseed oil is the most common medium in oil painting...but from what plant do we draw this oil?

Answer: Flax

In modern oil painting, linseed oil is diluted with turpentine and used as a medium. The disadvantage of using linseed oil? The paintings tend to yellow over time. The advantage? Less cracking.
6. Lithography is a printing method which employs which of these objects?

Answer: Stone

The etymology of the word 'lithography' should have given away this answer. The word is originally derived from the Greek for 'stone drawing'! This process was invented by Aloys Senefelder, a German playwright who used it as a cheap method of reproducing his plays, in 1898.
7. Which of the following words describes an architectural piece that horizontally spans two columns at the top?

Answer: Lintel

The most famous and recognizable example of a lintel would be the stone formation in the Salisbury Plain that we like to call...Stonehenge.
8. Which of these items would most likely be found atop a dome structure?

Answer: Lantern

Lanterns atop domes are well-lit structures with windows at each side, used for ventilation along with lighting. The word 'lantern' has the same etymology as the word 'lamp'...original meaning 'to shine' in Greek (lampein).
9. Also called 'Typewriter Art' this form of design employs words and letters for visual effect. What is the other name for this artform?

Answer: Lettrism

The words employed in Lettrist art are not used for their literal meaning but rather for their form and shape. Chinese characters have become popular in this regard.
10. Here's a giveaway...but it's a must, what a wonderful concept! True or false: According to art critic and connoisseur Bernard Berenson, the primary role of art in our life is for 'life-enhancement' purposes.

Answer: True

Isn't this so true about art? It's a life enhancer, one of the true enjoyments that human beings may experience and at low cost. I believe that lovers of art may actually extend the length of their lives simply as a result of their desire to continue and explore the beauty of the human condition.

It seemed to work for Berenson, he lived to be 94 years old! Thank you once again for rummaging through one of my art terms quizzes...next comes 'M'!
